VANCOUVER 2004

IT WAS AN AMAZING EFFORT.  11 MEN STARTED A MONSTER TASK THAT ORDINARY HUMANS COULD NOT NORMALLY ACCOMPLISH BUT WITH THE PROPER MOTIVATION (A CHANCE TO BE PUBLISHED) AND LOTS OF SUGAR AND ENCOURAGEMENT (FROM CELEBRITIES EVEN) MIGHTY OBSTACLES WERE OVERCOME AND SOME AMAZING COMICS WERE CREATED.  BETTER STILL, OVER $1600.00 WAS RAISED FOR THE VANCOUVER RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE.  WAY TO GO GUYS!!

BELOW ARE THE PARTICIPANTS AND SAMPLES OF THEIR WORK.  CLICK ON THE PICS TO GO TO THEIR PAGES AND CHECK OUT THEIR SAMPLES (PART ME BEING A BAD PHOTOGRAPHER AND PART SUCKY WITH THE PHOTO EDITOR.  I'LL MAKE THEM BETTER, PROMISE).

DAN LANGSDALE - THE MAN HAD A PLAN AND HE WAS FOCUSED.  IN THE END HE COMPLETED A BOOK WITH SUCH QUALITY IT COULD GO ON THE SHELF TOMORROW.

STEFAN MANZ - OUR YOUNGEST PARTICIPANT AT 12, STEFAN CRAFTED A TALE OF ADOLESCENT ISOLATION WE COULD ALL RELATE TO.  BUT BEFORE THE TITLE CHARACTER GETS TOO CARRIED AWAY WITH THE CONTROL OVER THE WORLD AROUND HIM, HE MEETS HIS MAKER.

ETHAN PEACOCK - DID WHAT HE LOVES BEST, DRAW!  STEPPING OUT FROM BEHIND THE RETAIL COUNTER AND SETTLING IN BEHIND HIS DRAFTING TABLE, HE BRINGS US AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL STORY.

PAUL TANNER - MR. DETAIL.  PENCILED 24 PAGES BUT HIS DETAIL ON THE INKING SET HIM BACK FROM REACHING THE 24 HOUR GOAL.  HE PROMISES TO BE FINISHED HIS HORROR STORY IN THE  NEXT COUPLE DAYS.

TONY CRANFIELD-ROSE - I SAW SOME KYLE BAKER AND WILL EISNER IN HIS WORK AND WAS BLOWN AWAY.  OH YEAH, THE MONKEY CHAUFFEUR ROCKED TOO!

BROOKS GORDAN - THE SINGLE FUNNIEST PANEL CREATED DURING THE DAY IN A COMIC ABOUT A SHOW WITH SOME VERY UNUSUAL HOSTS.

TREVOR METZ - CAN A MAN WHO LIVED A LIFE OF WRONGS DO SOMETHING RIGHT?  THIS STORY TELLS US IF IT'S POSSIBLE AND PROBABLY HAS ONE OF THE COOLEST 2-PAGE SPREADS I'VE EVER SEEN.

ROBIN THOMPSON - A "CHAMPION OF HELL" BRINGS US SOME CRIME NOIR WITH SLICK DETAIL BASED ON A ORIGINAL CHARACTER CREATION ROBIN HAS PREVIOUSLY DONE A SMALL PRESS BOOK FOR.

CRAIG ELLIOT - COULDN'T QUITE MAKE IT THOUGH THE DAY.  IN ALL FAIRNESS, HE CLOSED THE RESTAURANT HE WORKS AT THE NIGHT BEFORE AND HAD TO WORK THE NEXT DAY.  A VALIANT EFFORT.

ROBERT PARIZEK - THE MOST INNOVATIVE COMIC CREATED.  USING RANDOM PHOTOS HE TOOK THE WEEK LEADING UP TO THE EVENT, HE BLENDED THEM TOGETHER WITH SOME VERY DEEP COMMENTARY ON HIS LAPTOP.  INTENSE STUFF.

JASON LOWE - WAS ABLE TO CREATE OVER A DOZEN PAGES OF PENCIL DRAWN, PAINTED AND EVEN SOMETIMES SLIGHTLY THREE-DIMENSIONAL ARTWORK BEFORE THE HOURS GOT THE BETTER OF HIM.  WHEN COMPLETED, IT WILL BE A TRUE WORK OF ART.

IT WAS AN AMAZING NIGHT FOR ME, WATCHING SOME SERIOUS WORK BEING DONE AND DONE VERY WELL.  WE HAD A VISIT FROM COMIC ARTIST STEVE SADOWSKI WHO TALKED WITH MANY OF THE CREATORS AND AN UNEXPECTED DROP IN FROM ACTOR CHRISTIAN SLATER.  BOTH MADE GENEROUS DONATIONS TO THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AS WELL.

WE ALSO NEED TO THANK JAY BROWN FROM CITYTV WHO COVERED THE EVENT AND THE ROUNDHOUSE COMMUNITY CENTRE WHO DONATED TABLES.

SNACKS FROM MCDONALD'S AND TIM HORTONS WERE SUPPLIED BY ELFSAR.

I FULLY EXPECT AT LEAST ONE OF OUR BOYS TO MAKE IT INTO SCOTT'S "24 HOUR COMICS" BOOK BUT NO FEAR, ELFSAR AND HAPPY HARBOR WILL DO OUR BEST ASAP TO COMPILE AND RELEASE THE "24 HOUR COMICS OF VANCOUVER 2004".  AND BY THE WORKING TITLE YOU CAN BET WE WILL GO AGAIN IN 2005!

24 Hour Comics Day

by john burns

Publish Date: 15-Apr-2004

If you're moved by debates over the relative merits of the Esterbrook No. 356 and the Gillott 604EF steel nib, you'll want to skedaddle down to Elfsar Comics & Toys (1007 Hamilton Street) to take part in the drawathon marking 24 Hour Comics Day. The day, of course, is April 24, and ink-stained wretches willing to trade sleep and $100 for glory and three square meals can fortify their resolve with 24 Hour Comics (About Comics, $11.95), a nine-artist best-of drawn from similar projects. For info and registration, call 604-688-5922 or visit www.elfsar.com/. The deadline is Friday (April 16). Audiences are welcome, especially if they bring donations for Ronald McDonald House British Columbia.

  • Out of 24 Hour Comics Day comes a second anthology: 24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2004! This features 24 interesting stories chosen from the hundreds created on 24 Hour Comics Day, an extremely thick collection of energetic, improvisational comics.

After a careful effort reading through hundreds of the comics stories created on 24 Hour Comics Day, editor Nat Gertler has selected 24 tales to go into the book 24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2004. These stories were selected not just for their quality but also for the breadth of styles and participants involved in the event.
The better known creator whose works are included are:

    • Christian Gossett of The Red Star fame does 24 pages on the creative effort
    • Leave It To Chance's Paul Smith spent the day creating a one-man anthology of stories, one of which will be in the book.
    • Joel Priddy of the award-winning Pulpatoon Pilgrimage shows us an encounter between a space alien and a king
    • Eric Wolfe Hanson from G.I. Joe and Micronauts tells an action packed tale of "Late Fees"
    • Dead@17's Josh Howard puts his talent into an adventure with gorgeous gals and space aliens
    • Ken Lashley unleashes a new superhero team, the R-Force
Also included in the book are:
    • Skeezix, and his humorous short tale "Bird Calling"
    • Jennifer O. brings her square cat from Squarecatcomics.com to the party
    • Marketing exec Mandy Marxen muses about high school reunions
    • Ben Towle deals with the childhood reality of a girl (uggh!) moving into the neighborhood
    • Canadian Dani Atkinson drew her tale on a series of 24 trading cards
    • Patrick Joseph looks at cause and effect in life
    • Chris Watkins tells tales based on his days as a teacher in Japan
    • Comic book store owner Jefferson Powers gives us a photocomic about what 24 Hour Comics Day was like in his store
    • 12 year old Clara Harbour shows her own characters fighting for a chance to appear in her comic
    • Artist Alida Saxon makes her first comic book ever, a charming bit of animal myth
    • Danielle Corsetto deals with the perils of being a heartbreaker
    • David Steinlicht on "Cleaning My Work Area!"
    • Amanda Levinson and Adam Rosenblatt turn their prospective wedding vows to one another into a comic
    • Michael Conner's tale of rather abstract creatures
    • Ryan Browne shows us the difficult life of a superpowered demon in Hollywood
    • Community college teacher Ryan Claytor unleashes "Rock & Soul"
    • Stephen Sloane's Young Hip Priest gets his 24 pages
    • Geno Heleen puts forth the wordless tale "Hats Off 2 Ya!"

24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2004 (ISBN 0-9753958-0-7) is a 496 page 5.5"x7.75" paperback published by About Comics.

The print run is under 2000 copies, so get one while you can!
