ANTARCTIC PRESS

BAD KIDS GO TO HELL #1

Written by Matt Spradlin. Illustrated by Anthony Vargas.

This looks like it could be a fun romp. Fun in a “doesn’t take itself seriously” way. If you want something other than spandex, “Dark Reign”, and DCUs complex continuity, pick this title up!

ARCHAIA STUDIO PRESS

We’re not focusing on one particular book, but rather making sure everyone knows that Archaia Studio Press is back in business again! A small publisher with a very strong line-up of books the past few years (of which MOUSE GUARD is likely the best known), they were in limbo for most of the past 12 months, but are back to bring you some off the beaten path high quality reading once again. So keep your eye on them, and check out one of these titles they’re offering this month.

AWAKENING VOL. 1 HC

THE KILLER #10

ROBOTIKA: FOR A FEW RUBLES MORE #1 & #2 (DOUBLE SIZED ISSUE)

SOME NEW KIND OF SLAUGHTER

ASPEN

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT IRIS #1

Written by David Whol. Illustrated by Eduardo Francisco.

Iris is a secretary, assassin, & bodyguard, who no doubt can kick all manner of asses in high heels and miniskirts. I'm sure she kicks really high so we can see her assassin panties, too. Anyway, it turns out Iris has a boss who is {GASP!} evil! Because she thought only very nice people would hire someone who is a secretary AND an assassin? So now she has to choose between her sense of morality and her sense of job security. This economy is such a bitch.

AVATAR PRESS

ANNA MERCURY 2: ULTRASPACIAL DREADNOUGHT VANAHEIM #1 (of 5)

start reading here!

Written by Warren Ellis. Illustrated by Facundo Percio.

The first volume was very enjoyable, and Ellis himself said it wasn’t “mental enough”, and wants to make sure this volume delivers the promise of being really big & bold pulp sci-fi. So we get our beloved six-foot redhead sci-fi superspy battling interdimensional vikings from beyond space. Or something. I didn't read what the story was about, I just wanted to write the title. Ultraspacial Dreadnought Vanaheim. It almost sounds dirty.

FRANKENSTEIN'S WOMB GN

Written by Warren Ellis. Illustrated by Marek Oleksicki.

In the volcanic summer of 1816, Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein. But it actually started several months earlier, when Mary Shelley actually entered Castle Frankenstein, and witnessed the same horrors she would eventually write down.

BOOM! STUDIOS

DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? #1 (of 24)

Written by Phillip K. Dick. Illustrated by Steven Dupre.

For those of you who don’t already know, this story is BLADE RUNNER. This is not a comic adaptation of Philip K Dick’s story, but the actual text of the short story with illustrations by Dupre. An ambitious project, but well deserved for one of the science fiction classics of all time. Each issue will have essays about PKD. This issue has one by Warren Ellis, who is quite the PKD fan.

DEVIL'S DUE

DRAFTED: ONE HUNDRED DAYS #1 (of 1)

Written by Mark Powers.  Illustrated by Chris Lie.

Okay. I think we're going a little overboard here. Here is a one-shot of Drafted ... starring Barack Obama. Barack Obama is fighting aliens now. Okay. But this is the last one, okay? No more.

BARACK THE BARBARIAN: QUEST FOR THE TREASURE OF STIMULI #1

Written by Larry Hama. Illustrated by various artists.

Okay. I quit. Game over. I know the President is a comic fan and I know his election made history, but I don’t think when the word “Change” was shouted that it meant for this. Although, if he stabs Red Sarah (aka, Palin - who gets her very own variant cover), then I might just buy it.

DIGITAL MANGA PUBLISHING

SWALLOWING THE EARTH VOL. 1

Written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka.

A lesser-known work from the God of Manga. Amidst the chaos of World War II, Japanese sailors hear of Zephyrus, a captivating woman in the South Pacific. Years later, Zephyrus reappears in Japan, wielding a mysterious power over all men to exact revenge against their crimes against women since the dawn of time. Talk about holding a grudge.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

BUCK ROGERS #1

Written by Scott Beatty. Illustrated by Carlos Rafael. Covers by John Cassaday & Alex Ross.

The latest of Dynamite’s licensed re-imaginings kicks off in earnest here. See what they’ve done with the sci-fi pulp classic character and enjoy the ride.

PROJECT SUPERPOWERS: CHAPTER 2 #0

Written by Alex Ross & Jim Krueger. Illustrated by Edgar Salazar & Doug Klauba. Covers by Alex Ross.

The groundwork for these revitalized characters and their newly fleshed out universe was laid in the first volume, and now Dynamite promises that the action really begins. Sure to please fans of Alex Ross or anyone who enjoyed the first series. And hey, at $1 (USD) the price is certainly worth giving it a shot.

I.D.W. PUBLISHING

CAPTAIN CANUCK VOL. 1 HC

Written by Richard Comely. Illustrated by George Freeman.

At long last, the classic Captain Canuck comics are finally being collected, in this first of two promised deluxe hardcovers. This one is definitely worth getting.

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN #1 & #2 (of 4)

Written by Andy Schmidt. Illustrated by Chee Yang Ong.

I had no idea that TWOK was the only movie that didn't get a comic adaptation! They adapted the first one? It sucked? Or how about that shitty Search for Spock? Or that last Next Gen one, Attack of the Clones? In any case, IDW now rectifies this horrible oversight with their own adaptation of the greatest sequel ever made.

KETTLEDRUMMER / DIABOLO EDICONE

YOUNG LOVECRAFT GN

Written by Jose Oliver. Illustrated by Batolo Torres.

I don’t know anything more about this than what the blurb in Previews tells us, but this just looks damn cool.

NEW ENGLAND COMICS

THE TICK SPECIALS: THE COMPLETE WORKS TP

Written & illustrated various.

SPOON! It’s great that the long history of the Tick has been collected over the past six months or so. And now all those Tick holiday specials are collected here for your reading pleasure. If you’re ever having a bad day pick up a volume of the Tick, I dare you not to laugh.

NEW RELIABLE COMICS

JAN’S ATOMIC HEART

Written & illustrated by Simon Roy.

This looks like an interesting off-beat story about a man who is stuck in a robot body, and becomes increasingly worried about his tenuous situation. It’s a future political sc-fi thriller set amid social paranoia that isn’t too difficult for us to imagine. This is strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys original and well-crafted stories.

ONI

STEPHEN COLBERT'S TEK JANSEN HC

Written by John Layman & Tom Peyer. Illustrated by Robbi Rodriguez & Scott Chandler.

Colbert's interstellar hero gets a fancy collection of his very own. Use it to pick up political science fiction chicks.

WASTELAND VOL. 4 TP: DOG TRIBE

Written by Antony Johnston. Illustrated by Chris Mitten. Cover by Ben Templesmith.

This series has just been fantastic, with great concepts and phenomenal characters to pull you through a desert nightmare. This is a treat for any sci-fi fan who enjoys post-apocalyptic stories.

RADICAL PUBLISHING

CALIBER VOL. 1 TP: FIRST CANON OF JUSTICE

Written by Sam Sakar. Illustrated by Garrie Gastonny.

Imagine if Arthurian legend had been set in the wild west. That’s the premise of this series, and it delivers quite well. Radical has made a strong impression with consistently high quality books since they began publishing last spring, and now is your chance to see what you’ve been missing.

HERCULES VOL. 1 TP: THE THRACIAN WARS

Written by Steve Moore. Illustrated by Admira Wijaya.

Hercules of myth like you’ve never seen him before. Can he save Greece from an army he trained to be unstoppable? Another of the early titles from impressive new publisher Radical.

DARK HORSE COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: TALES OF THE VAMPIRES #1

Written by Becky Cloonan. Illustrated by Vasilis Lolos. Cover by Jo Chen. Variant cover by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon.

Following the recent events of Season Eight, vampires are now an accepted part of society.

Indie comics superstars Cloonan and Lolos present the tale of a young man who likes to hang out with vampires in hopes of escaping the monotony of his small town life. And then his mundane life really gets exciting.

PREDATOR #1 (of 4)

Written by John Arcudi. Illustrated by Javier Saltares.

Rejoice! First Dark Horse brought back ALIENS, and now they return with the re-launch of Predator! Dark Horse has a long tradition of telling good Predator stories, and this one doesn’t look like it is going to be any different. Which might just help to erase the ugly taste of AvP: REQUIEM from your mouth. Plus, all of the previous Predator comics are available in the nicely collected omnibuses, so you can read all about their previous tales of carnage.

WEREWOLVES ON THE MOON: VERSUS VAMPIRES #1 (of 3)

Written by Dave Land. Illustrated by Matt & Shawn Fillbach.

Three werewolves travel to the moon to become kings of the moon, but the vampires inhabiting the dark side of the moon might have something to say about it! This looks fun, in an over the top, old-school pulpy kind of way.

THE ART OF TONY MILLIONAIRE

Written and illustrated by Tony Millionaire.

Partake of the genius that gave us THE ADVENTURES OF SOCK MONKEY comic and the DRINKY CROW SHOW for Cartoon Network. You too can scratch your head and say “I don't get it!”

EERIE ARCHIVES VOLUME 2 HC

Written & illustrated various.

I can’t possibly recommend these volumes more. Truly a must for the classic horror fan. If you enjoy EC comics, this is some damn fine reading. And on top of great stories, the caliber of art is just phenomenal. A true nostalgia trip.

GIGANTIC TP

Written by Rick Remender. Illustrated by Eric Nguyen.

Whether you’re a trade-waiter, or simply missed this one when it was out in singles, now is your chance to read this twist-filled send up of reality tv. A gigantic alien robot is relentlessly pursued across the universe, and attempts to save us all from the destruction that follows him wherever he goes. Sort of THE TRUMAN SHOW meets VOLTRON.

DC COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

Although not officially labelled as such, it’s “Batman month” at DC, with the launch of three new Bat-titles and the post BATTLE FOR THE COWL direction of the two main Bat-books.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #1

Written by Grant Morrison. Illustrated by Frank Quietly. Variant cover by J.G. Jones.

The real dynamic duo of this book is the stellar creative team. The reunion of Morrison & Quietly should be instant comic-gold, and promise to rejuvenate the Caped crusader into something more then just “The Goddamn Batman”. The new adventures of a brand new Dynamic Duo begin here, as the New Batman and New Robin join forces in their New Batmobile to fight crime. This is definitely the no-brainer of the new Bat-books, and a must for anyone who enjoys awesome comic books.

BATMAN #687

Written by Judd Winick. Illustrated by Ed Benes & Rob Hunter. Cover by Tony Daniel. Variant cover by J.G. Jones.

Now that the smoke has cleared from the BATTLE FOR THE COWL, and a clear victor has emerged, Judd Winick will be writing the adventures of the new man under the cowl in the flagship Bat-book. Yes, he’s the man who resurrected Jason Todd with Superboy wall-punches, but this will still remain the key title for the new Batman. There is also the other half of the creative team to be settled, as Ed Benes is supposedly a temporary artist, with some rumoured BIG names being mentioned as the ongoing penciller. This issue serves as an epilogue to BATTLE FOR THE COWL, and features appearances by the other two-thirds of the DCU trinity.

DETECTIVE COMICS #854

Written by Greg Rucka. Illustrated by J.H. Williams and Cully Hamner. Variant cover by J.G. Jones.

Although Batman is no longer starring in Detective Comics, a new era begins for DC’s oldest title as Rucka & Williams bring us Batwoman and explore the motivation behind the woman wearing the Bat. Rucka’s practiced noir sensibilities from his crime novelist career, coupled with J.H. Williams beautiful artwork, will make this a fantastic read. Plus, Rucka teams up with artist Cully Hamner (BLUE BEETLE, BLACK LIGHTENING: YEAR ONE) to deliver the monthly co-feature starring The (Montoya) Question. Great creative team + great characters = great comic purchase! This will be an excellent book, and is definitely worth picking up!

RED ROBIN #1

Written by Christopher Yost. Illustrated by Ramon Bachs.

Who’s under the hood? You’ll have to pick this issue up to find out. One of the failed claimants to the cowl dons a new costume, convinced the true caped crusader is still alive, and sets out on a global expedition to find the original. This one could be the surprise “sleeper” book of the new Bat-universe, so start reading from the beginning.

BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM #1

Written by Paul Dini and Marc Andreyko. Illustrated by Dustin Nguyen & Derek Fridolfs and George Jeanty & Karl Story. Cover by Dustin Nguyen. Variant cover by J.G. Jones.

Nothing will ever be able to replace GOTHAM CENTRAL, but this book looks to follow in those footsteps quite nicely. Gotham city takes centre stage in this new title told from the street level

perspective of both new and familiar characters in Gotham, brought to us by recent DETECTIVE COMICS team of Pini and Nguyen. Equally exciting, is the ongoing co-feature starring the recently cancelled Manhunter (Kate Spencer) by creator Marc Andreyko and artist George Jeanty (BUFFY: SEASON EIGHT), which will fit the tone of this book perfectly.

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #1

Written by Paul Dini. Illustrated by Guillem March. Variant cover by J.G. Jones.

BIRDS OF PREY this ain’t! On the surface, this book starring Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy might look like it’s aiming for the T&A factor, and with March’s beautiful line-work it certainly will look VERY nice, but this one should be more than simply a book with sexy women. These bad-ass girls of Gotham are about to show the men that they should never be underestimated.

BOOSTER GOLD #21

Written by Dan Jurgens and Matthew Sturges.  Illustrated by Dan Jurgens, Norm Rapmund, and Mike Norton.

The only superhero in the current DCU timeline who knew about Booster’s time jumping heroics was Batman. Now that Batman’s dead, Booster heads to the Batcave to check it out. But he runs smack into the New Batman, and it probably ain’t pretty. Plus, beginning this month, there’s good news for Blue Beetle fans, as Matt Sturges and Mike Norton bring us Jaime Reyes in his very own ongoing co-feature!

BRAVE AND THE BOLD #24

Written & illustrated by Who Cares.

This book started out so great, and now ... well, Black Lightning and Static brought to you by Matt Wayne and Howard Porter. Excuse me if I’m not jumping for joy.

FINAL CRISIS AFTERMATH: DANCE #2

Written by Joe Casey.  Illustrated by ChrisCross.

Apparently, the Super Young Team is in trouble because they decided to sponsor a product called Oxy-Gen that somehow caused some kind of tragedy. I’d fire their business manager, if I were them. Or maybe they could talk to Booster Gold for some tips on corporate sponsorship?

FINAL CRISIS AFTERMATH: INK #2

Written by Eric Wallace.  Illustrated by Fabrizio Fiorentino.

The Tattooed Man has to look no further than Catwoman to see that, yes, it is possible for a super-villain to reform and become all heroic. However, his powers have spiraled out of control and the police are still after him. Tough times ahead.

FLASH: REBIRTH #3

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver.

Yet another race between Flash and Superman. And why does DC always pretend they’ve never raced before? It seems to happen semi-frequently. However, Geoff Johns has taken great pains to assure readers that the Superman / Flash race is only a small portion of this issue. Get ready for more exploration on Barry Allen’s role in this new world, and the deepening mystery of dying speedsters.

GREEN LANTERN #42

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Philip Tan & Jonathan Glapion.

This issue sees the Conclusion to the “Agent Orange” story, which hopefully means this stupid “Longest F@$%ing Dusk Ever” can finally morph into the BLACKEST NIGHT, which at this point is starting to seem more and more like the conclusion to BATTLE CHASERS – never happening. It’s been a slow build, but all of this is leading towards the big BLACKEST NIGHT event starting later this year, so make sure you don’t miss the clues being left here.

GREEN LANTER CORPS #37

Written by Peter J. Tomassi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman.

Following the break out on OA Kyle, Guy and Killowog desperately try to contain the devastation wrought by the raging hordes of Red Lanterns and Sinestro Corps. If this is just the tune up, BLACKEST NIGHT is going to suck for the Boys in Green.

JONAH HEX #44

Written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray. Illustrated by Cristiano Cucina.

This fantastic series is usually “done in one” stories, with an occasion two-parter, but this month marks a change, with the start of a kick-ass six part epic “Six Gun War”. This tale will incorporate almost all the characters you’ve met thus far on the wild adventures of Hex. Give it a try and see how good this underappreciated book is.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #34

Written by Len Wein.  Illustrated by Jose Luis & JP Mayer.

The recently dissolved Justice League faces off against the Royal Flush Gang - always trouble, those guys. Yes, it is a fill in issue, but considering all the hardships Len Wein has been dealing with, he deserves another turn at bat for the league, doesn’t he?

SUPERMAN #689

Written by James Robinson.  Illustrated by Renato Guedes and Jose Wilson Magalhaes.

Soul searching. That’s what James Robinson’s heroes always do extremely well. And now that Mon-El has discovered that he may be dying, again, Robinson and Guedes take him on a whirlwind tour of the world to see as much of it as he can.

ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #12

Written by Greg Rucka.  Illustrated by Pere Perez.

Annual Alert! (if you're already subscribing to the series, YOU STILL NEED TO ORDER THIS!)

Ever since the identity of Nightwing and Flamebird were revealed, many questions have been asked about just how these two characters took on those identities. Well, this Annual contains the answers you’ve been looking for.

SUPERMAN / BATMAN #61

Written by Michael Green & Mike Johnson. Illustrated by Francis Manapul.

The final instalment of this two-parter, illustrated by Francis Manapul, should be beautiful to look at and a lot of fun to read.

SUPERMAN: WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON #4

Written by James Robinson and Greg Rucka.  Illustrated by Pete Woods.

You just knew that the Guardians wouldn’t leave New Krypton alone, right? Meddling is what they do best, and so they send in Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart from Earth, and a third GL by the name of Sodom Yat. Just to be clear, he’s a daxamite with GL power. Headed to a planet pretty much “ruled” by Zod. Fight?

SUPERGIRL #42

Written by Sterling Gates.  Illustrated by Jamal Igle and Jon Sibal.

Well, in the previous issues, Supergirl has finally figured out just who is Superwoman. In this issue, she deals with the ramifications of that discovery. This book has been very good since Gates & Igle took over last year, so give it a try.

SECRET SIX #10

start reading here!

Written by Gail Simone. Illustrated by Nicola Scott & Doug Hazlewood.

The start of a new arc, and the perfect place for you to jump on board and discover how good and fun this book is!

TEEN TITANS #72

Written by Bryan Miller and Sean McKeever.  Illustrated by Joe Bennet and Jack Jadson.

It’s the Teen Titans versus the Fearsome Five! Does Wonder Girl have what it takes to lead this team? Also, the new ongoing co-feature on this book gives us a McKeever written Ravager story! Cool, eh?

WARLORD #3

Written by Mike Grell. Illustrated by Chad Hardin & Walden Wong. Cover by Mike Grell.

Yes, we’re going to keep telling you about this one every single month, because it’s worth your attention! Grell’s resuscitation of The Warlord continues as Travis Morgan and friends find their way to the mysterious Shadow Lands. You know, you’d think that people would learn to stop going to places that sound all dark and gloomy. Was Sunlight Land too far away?

WONDER WOMAN #33

Written by Gail Simone.  Illustrated by Aaron Lopresti.

Simone has been highly impressive so far on the title she was born to write, so don’t miss out as “The Rise of the Olympian” concludes and Wonder Woman turns the page on this dark chapter of her life.

ABSOLUTE JUSTICE HC

Written by Alex Ross & Jim Krueger. Illustrated by Alex Ross & Doug Braithwaite.

They may be pricey, but DC’s Absolute editions have always been absolutely worth the price. It’s the Justice League versus the Legion of Doom! If you like Alex Ross, you’ll LOVE this book!

However, if you’re not a diehard JLA fan or the biggest Ross fan, then you’ll likely find much better ways to spend your money than this Silver Age love letter in an oversized collection.

EL DIABLO: THE HAUNTED HORSEMAN TP

Written by Jai Nitz. Illustrated by Phil Hester & Andre Parks.

This was a nice treat. Bringing the El Diablo character into the modern age, Jai Nitz has crafted a very intriguing story full of shocks, surprises and characters that will you keep you enthralled from start to finish. A great series for western and superhero fans alike.

FINAL CRISIS: REVELATIONS HC

Written by Greg Rucka. Illustrated by Philip Tan & Jonathan Glapion.

This was off to the side of the “main event” and deserves your attention. Rucka writing Batwoman, The Question, and The Spectre, is worth the price alone, and Philip Tan’s illustration is some delicious icing on the metaphorical cake.

VERTIGO

AIR #10

start reading here!

Written by G. Willow Wilson. Illustrated by M.K. Perker.

For those of you who have yet to take our advice and pick up the first collection, this is the perfect place to jump on this fantastic new series. And do yourself a favour and grab the Volume 1 trade paperback, while you’re at it, as it’s affordably priced and an engaging read.

FABLES #85 - “The Great Fables Crossover” part 7

Written by Bill Willingham & Matthew Sturges. Illustrated by Tony Akins & Andrew Pepoy.

JACK OF FABLES #35 - “The Great Fables Crossover” part 8

Written by Bill Willingham & Matthew Sturges. Illustrated by Russ Braun & Jose Marzan Jr..

THE LITERALS #3 (of 3) - “The Great Fables Crossover” part 9

Written by Bill Willingham & Matthew Sturges. Illustrated by Mark Buckingham & Andrew Pepoy.

The “Great Fables Crossover” concludes this month in all three FABLES titles, and things will never be the same! Who knows, for once, it might be more than just hyperbole.

MADAME XANADU #12

Written by Matt Wagner.  Illustrated by Michael Wm. Kaluta.

John Constantine is not the only occult detective in the Vertigo pantheon. Illustrated by the legendary Kaluta, this is the second issue of a supernatural mystery that sees Madame Xanadu hot on the trails of a savage killer in 1940’s NY.

100 BULLETS VOL. 13 TP: WILT

Written by Brian Azzarello. Illustrated by Eduardo Risso.

The final bullet has been fired (so to speak), and you can finally cap off your collection of one of the best series of the past decade.  And for those of you who haven’t been reading this book, now is the perfect time to start, as you won’t have the long painful wait between volumes and can finally enjoy some damn good reading.

DARK ENTRIES HC

Written by Ian Rankin. Illustrated by Werther Dell'Edera.

Award winning mystery novelist Ian Rankin makes his comic book debut dragging occult detective John Constantine along for the ride. In this locked room mystery, Rankin throws Constantine into the middle of a reality show called “Dark Entries” which forces its contestants to live in a haunted house. But when they start disappearing, John Constantine is called in to investigate. Now, locked away with a band of star struck, celeb-wannabes JC has to face off against a villain from his past if he want to get out alive. It's a classic Agatha Christie style mystery. Only with demons. And John Constantine.

FILTHY RICH HC

Written by Brian Azzarello. Illustrated by Victor Santos.

Azzarello is one of the current kings of crime fiction, as proven by his recent JOKER hardcover and the critically acclaimed 100 BULLETS. So when the brass over at Vertigo decided to release a series of original crime HC’s, choosing Azzarello to help launch the line must have been a no-brainer. Filthy Rich tells the tale of an ex jock named Junk laid low by injury and a gambling problem, now selling used cars and lusting after his boss's daughter. So when he gets hired as the daughter's bodyguard while she tears up the New York club scene, he jumps at the chance; who wouldn't? But it turns out that she wants more than just a bodyguard, she wants someone to do all her dirty work. And if Junk does her dirty work, he might just get what he wants and then some.

MADAME XANADU VOL. 1 TP: DISENCHANTED

Written by Matt Wagner. Illustrated by Amy Reeder Hadley & Richard Friend.

If you’re a fan of SANDMAN, THE BOOKS OF MAGIC, or Vertigo comics in general, then you’re doing yourself a disservice if you’re not reading this book. This centuries spanning book has been a consistently enjoyable read, and a fascinating examination of this little used mystical character. As always, Wagner’s writing is top notch, and newcomer Reeder Hadley’s art work has a wonderful style to it. Like most Vertigo first volumes, this volume is quite affordable, and you get a James Robinson introduction to boot.

NORTHLANDERS VOL. 2 TP: THE CROSS + HAMMER

Written by Brian Wood. Illustrated by Ryan Kelly.

Brian Wood tells good stories. With this title he is crafting fantastic tales of Vikings and breathing new life into old tales. This series has been enjoyable since its inception and the second volume collects issues #11 - #16 and weaves a classic tale of Vikings at the tail end of their rule in Ireland. Also, there is no real reading chronology to the series, making it even easier to pick up and try. So pick it up; you won’t regret it.

WILDSTORM

FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH: THE NIGHTMARE WARRIORS #1 (of 6)

Written by Jeff Katz & James Kuhoric. Illustrated by Jason Craig.

Remember how fun these three were together the first time around? Well, this series promises to be just as fun, with the same creative team returning to deliver more mayhem and dark humour as only Ash can deliver.

ASTRO CITY: THE DARK AGE BOOK ONE TP

Written by Kurt Busiek.  Illustrated by Brent Anderson.

Kurt Busiek has written a number of fine comics, but Astro City sure stands as one of the best of them. In this volume, witness the history of Astro City as it unfolds through the eyes of two brothers in the 1970’s.

CHUCK TP

Written by Peter Johnson & Zev Borrow.  Illustrated by Jeremy Haun & Phil Noto.

Chuck is one of the better shows on television right now, and it sure makes for damn good comic book reading too. Heck, it’s written by one of the series writers, so why not give this book a try if you’re a fan of that awesome show?

WILDCATS: WORLD'S END BOOK ONE TP

Written by Christos Gage. Illustrated by Neil Googe.

The WildStorm Earth has been destroyed, torn apart by a massive superhuman battle. The Wildcats a team of Kherubim aliens & alien hybrids scavenge the ruins of Los Angeles, saving the few human survivors from superpowered cannibals and trying to stop their rival species, the parasitic Daemonites from taking over. Meanwhile, their former ally Majestic has turned the Island of Hawaii into a fascist paradise attempting to combine the best of the lost Kherubim and human societies. It's a brutal new world where none of the old superhero rules apply. Like Cormac McCarthy's novel “The Road”, only with spandex and hot chicks with swords.

BAD DOG #4

Written by Joe Kelly. Illustrated by Diego Greco.

Buy this book. I will say it every month. Why would I do this you ask? Because it’s a F#$%ing good time.

CHEW #1

start reading here!

Written by John Layman. Illustrated by Rob Guillory.

This new series looks wrong in the best possible way. The protagonist of the series is a detective who is “cibopathic”; that means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. When his boss uncovers Tony's talent, he is immediately sent on the most gruesome murder details possible, to eat the evidence and solve the crime. It's a dirty job. And Tony's gonna have to eat a lot of dirty things to solve his cases. Don't miss this. It should be a lot of fun. And check out http://chewcomic.blogspot.com/ for more details.

DEAD @ 17: AFTERBIRTH #1 (of 4)

Written & illustrated by Josh Howard.

The cult-favourite series returns with an all new tale of life after death. The perfect place to start reading, or to continue reading after picking up the recent DEAD @ 17 ULTMATE EDITION that collected every story prior to this one.

SPAWN #193

Written by Todd McFarlane. Illustrated by Greg Capullo.

For the old-school Spawn fans, this issue brings another blast from the past as Greg Capulo returns to guest-pencil the title he made his name illustrating. And this issue spotlights Sam & Twitch, and that nasty evil Clown. For everyone else, you likely won’t care.

WITCHBLADE / THE DARKNESS / ANGELUS: BLOOD ON THE SANDS #1 (of 1)

Written by Phillip W. Smith.  Illustrated by Sheldon Mitchell & Tom Grindberg.

Top cow titles WITCHBLADE and THE DARKNESS have been quietly getting better and better, and the recent BROKEN TRINITY mini has given Angelus new fame. This little story tells us a tale of the Top Cow Trinity from an earlier time and mystical place: 13th century Arabia.

BACK TO BROOKLYN TP

Written by Garth Ennis & Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Mihailo Vukelic.

Reading books like this make me wonder what things Garth Ennis dreams of. This book about the brother of a mob boss turned informer, trying to get his family out is one sick look into the world of organized crime. Ennis’ dark sense of humor abounds. Extreme and well worth a read.

DOUGLAS FREDERICKS AND THE HOUSE OF THEY GN

Written by Joe Kelly. Illustrated by Benjamin Roman.

Joe Kelly can do no wrong in my book. Lately he has been kicking all kinds of ass with books like I KILL GIANTS, BAD DOG (buy it already!) and FOUR EYES. Douglas Frederick is trying to create an extra special gift for his parents’ 15th wedding anniversary, but his wild ideas go against what they say. But who are they?

PUG GN

Written by Derek McCulloch. Illustrated by Greg Espinoza.

McCulloch is great at doing character pieces. He really knows how to delve into a person and make them alive on paper. Pug is the story of an ex boxer on a downward spiral that seemingly has no end. He is now collecting for a loan shark, and feels the need to set certain things straight in the world. This promises to be a very uncompromising look into a man on a mission.

TASTY BULLET GN

Written by Jonathan Vankin & Arnold Pander. Illustrated by Arnold Pander.

Maybe it’s an old school fondness for the Pander Brothers, but this looks like it could be a lot of fun. But I’ve been known to wrong once or twice before, as my comic collection will prove.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #600

Written by Ed Brubaker, Mark Waid, and Roger Stern. Illustrated by Butch Guice, Luke Ross, and Dale Eaglesham. Covers by Steve Epting and Alex Ross.

One short month after Cap celebrated issue #50, the old-school numbering returns just in time to bring us a massively oversized anniversary issue. The bonus features include several stories, an essay by Joe Simon himself, and a cover gallery featuring all 600 Captain America covers. And the main story by the monthly creative team promises the biggest plot twist since since your mom told you that you were adopted!

CAPTAIN BRITAIN & MI 13 ANNUAL #1

Written by Paul Cornell. Illustrated by Michael Collins. Cover by Greg “porn-face” Land.

Annual Alert! (if you're already subscribing to the series, YOU STILL NEED TO ORDER THIS!)

The monthly book has been an excellent and enjoyable read, and this Annual not only ties into the current “Vampire State” storyline in the monthly book, but promises to resolve the status of Captain Britain’s long missing wife Meggan, as she attempts to escape hell and save England from Dracula.

DARK AVENGERS / UNCANNY X-MEN: UTOPIA #1

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Marc Silvestri. Cover by Simone Bianchi. Variant cover by Jae Lee.

When mutant riots break out in San Francisco, Norman Osborn (pillar of sanity that he is) determines that the best response is to have the likes of Venom and Bullseye enforce martial law, quickly bringing Marvel’s mightiest mutants to blows with the Dark Avengers. How will this affect Osborn's secret deal with Emma Frost? And just who are the Dark X-Men? Find out in the first issue of this six part X-Men / Avengers crossover (the first in more than 15 years), brought to you and only Fraction & Silvestri!

DARK REIGN: LETHAL LEGION #1 (of 3)

Written by Frank Tieri. Illustrated by Mateus Santulouco.

Norman Osborn may have rested control of the Marvel Universe for the time being, but not all of his former criminal compatriots are enjoying the party. Absorbing Man, Nekra, Mr Hyde, Man-Ape and Grim Reaper either declined, or never received invitations. Unfortunately for this bevy of B-listers Norman decided to use them as party favours and has sent his Henchmen otherwise known as the law enforcing Avengers, to beat them like a cheap dollar store piñata.

DARK REIGN: MISTER NEGATIVE #1 (of 3)

Written by Fred Van Lente. Illustrated by Gianluca Gigliotta. Cover by Jae Lee.

Mister Negative has been an interesting enigma thus far in the “Brand New Day” Spidey-verse, so let’s hope this limited series continues that trend. Van Lente’s writing has proved consistently solid, and it will interesting to see what newcomer Gigliotta brings to the table with his art. Besides, Mister Negative is probably very pessimistic, and as a pessimist he would probably figure his book will fail. This is your chance to stick it to a super villain. Buy his book and prove him wrong. Take that Mr. Negative!

DARK REIGN: THE SINISTER SPIDER-MAN #1 (of 4)

Written by Brian Reed. Illustrated by Barry Kitson. Cover by Mike Deodato.

Except it's not Spider-Man. It's DARK SPIDER-MAN. Aka Venom. But not Venom-Venom. The Scorpion Venom. Yeah. Lame. I know.

DARK WOLVERINE #75

Written by Daniel Way. Illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli.

Because no Marvel comic can exist without some kind of adjective in front of it, Wolverine is now ... DARK WOLVERINE! Dun! Dun! DUUUUNNNNNNNN! And now it's all about his punk rock son, Daken. Daken's so angry at Logan, because like, he doesn't understand! So Daken's gonna run away. For real this time! And he works for Norman Osborn, hated enemy of just about everyone in the Marvel Universe. I’ve never been less excited about a Wolverine story then I am for this one (and that includes “Bone Claws”).

DARK REIGN: ZODIAC #1 (of 3)

Written by Joe Casey. Illustrated by Nathan Fox.

The best part of Dark Reign IMO is that with all the A list villains masquerading about as Heroes all the B Listers are finally getting a long overdue return to the spotlight. White Rabbit, the Squid, you name it and they’re suddenly off the bench and back in the game. Which is great for Zodiac, because all he wants is to pretend he’s Heath Ledger Joker and wreak havoc on anyone with powers. As this book weaves its way through the armpit of the Marvel underworld, you might get to see such exceptional villains as Barnacle, Yogi Dakor, or Hellcow. No promises, but fingers crossed.

GENEXT: UNITED #2 (of 5)

Written by Chris Claremont. Illustrated by Jonboy Meyers.

I only bring this up in the hope that someone can explain to me “WHY IN THE SWEET BLOODY HELL CLAREMONT IS STILL WRITING!?!?!” Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.

IMMORTAL IRON FIST #27

Written by Duane Swierczynski. Illustrated by Travel Foreman.

Well, I suppose it was inevitable after the departure of Brubaker & Fraction, but this always enjoyable title is wrapping up with this issue. If you listen closely, you can hear Brock shedding a tear. There are a series of one-shots featuring the Immortal Weapons later this summer, and Marvel isn’t saying what will happen to our beloved Iron Fist after that.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #14

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Salvador  and Larocca

Only Marvel would claim that half way through a story is the best place for new reader to jump on board. The best time for new readers to jump on board was 13 issues ago at #1! What Marvel should have said is that this is as good a time as any to prove you’re not a giant twit and actually read comics for their fantastic stories, not for the images of pretty make-believe ladies in tight leotards. However, on the off chance that happens to be the only reason you read comics, this one features a pretty lady in a tight metal suit of armor.

MARVEL PET’S HANDBOOK #1

Written & illustrated by a bunch of people I just lost all respect for.

If you buy this I will smack you. I will smack you very hard and then I will call you a girl … unless you are a girl, in which case I will think of some else. Remember: Elfsar is the comic shop that treats you with respect.

NEW AVENGERS #54

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Chris Bachalo.

The Marvel Universe gets a new Sorcerer Supreme, and there’s also a big battle with the Hood (who kinda has a significant connection to the previous Sorcerer Supreme).

PUNISHER: NAKED KILL #1

Written by Jonathan Mayberry. Illustrated by Laurence Campbell.

Thankfully (or sadly, depending on how messed up in the head you are) this is not a Punisher Porno. Instead, it’s Frank Castle moving farther from his roots as he slowly transforms into the defender of chastity destroying pimps, slave traffickers, and now seedy snuff film directors. Has anyone told Frank that if New York City is finally out of Mafioso there are plenty of Ill-intentioned Itlianos in Chicago, Irish hooligans in Boston, and trigger happy bikers in Vancouver?

RUNAWAYS #11

start reading here!

Written by Kathryn Immonen. Illustrated by Sara Pichelli.

A new creative team, and yet another new direction. We can only hope that the promise that relative newcomer Kathryn Immonen (wife of incredibly talented artist Stuart Immonen) has shown thus far will be what this title needs. From the preview pages, it looks like there’s hope, so pick this one up and see where it goes.

THUNDERBOLTS #133

Written by Andy Diggle. Illustrated by Roberto De La Torre.

Diggle started his run with a bang, involving Songbird’s escape from death. Now the new team is out to hunt her down. If history is any indication this will be the most explosive and exciting arc to date.

TIMESTORM 2009 / 2099: SPIDER-MAN #1 (of 1)

Written by Brian Reed. Illustrated by Wesley Craig.

Spider-Mans (Spider-Men?) 2099 and 2009 smack each other around in that greatest of all superhero clichés “the superhero pre-team up tussle”. Wouldn’t it be original if just once when two heroes met they sat down for a beer or latte and just shot the breeze.

WAR OF KINGS #4 (of 6)

Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning. Illustrated by Paul Pelletier.

Marvel cosmic is such a breath of fresh air. The events and the books involved are always at such a high caliber in quality and story that it’s impossible to not recommend them. Jump on board to the event which will shape the cosmic side of things for the foreseeable future. Abnett and Lanning do not disappoint.

WOLVERINE: REVOLVER #1 (of 1)

Written by Victor Gischler. Illustrated by Das Pastoras.

Wolverine goes to sin city to tear the Russian mob a new one on his way to taking down an old grudge. Can a silly man with a revolver really hope to survive a game of high stakes Russian roulette with the Marvel’s most maladjusted mutant?

X-FACTOR #44 & #45

Written by Peter David. Illustrated by Valentine De Landro & Marco Santucci.

Sometimes we talk about the big issues and the cool happenings, and sometimes we make fun of titles or creators we feel have earned our scorn, but most of the time the Elfsar gang write about our favourite titles that we feel deserve your love. I know X-Factor doesn’t have the “A-list” mutants in it, but this book is possibly the best super-hero book being produced by any company right now. Month in and month out. So pick an issue up and discover what we mean.

X-MEN FOREVER #1 & #2

Written by Chris Claremont. Illustrated by Tom Grummett.

Claremont has lost it and appears to be suffering from the first stages of Alzheimer’s, but before his contract is up at Marvel, the man who built the X-Men empire is back for one more try! We can all cross our fingers and hope that he brings his A-game and show fans why they loved him in the first place! But I wouldn’t hold your breath.

THE IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN TP

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Phil Hester & Cory Walker.

This short-lived series is finally collected in something other than the digest sized volumes. Worth reading Kirkman at his irreverent and smart-assed best.

DARK REIGN: DEADPOOL / THUNDERBOLTS TP

Written by Andy Diggle & Daniel Way. Illustrated by Roberto De La Torre & Paco Medina.

This has been one hella crazy story, and enjoyable in every way. It’s so quirky and fun that it makes me wonder what would have happened if Diggle would have gotten his way and put Deadpool on his Thunderbolts team. This is the closest we get and it’s awesome.

KICK ASS HC

Written by Mark Millar. Illustrated by John Romita Jr..

This over-the-top “realistic” book by the world’s biggest self-promotion machine and John Romita Jr. is finally collected for your incredulous enjoyment. Read it, and prove to everyone how cool you are when the movie comes out next year.

SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE: SOPHMORE JINX TP

Written by Terry Moore. Illustrated by Craig Rousseau.

Another series which more people should read. The consistency of this book is outstanding and even though it’s a different book with Terry Moore at the helm, it is still endearing and full of character moments that will have you coming back for more.

X-INFERNUS HC

Written by C.B. Cebulski. Illustrated by Giuseppi Camuncoli.

The most recent mutant “event” book, which saw the return of fan-favourite character Magik (of the newly re-launched NEW MUTANTS), is now collected in one convenient tome for your enjoyment.

ASTONISHING X-MEN: WHEDON & CASSADAY OMNIBUS HC

Written by Joss Whedon. Illustrated by John Cassaday & Laura Martin.

Arguably the best run of X-Men stories since Morrison left Marvel, the entire 25 issues (or four trade paperbacks, depending on how you view these things) of Whedon & Cassaday’s run is collected into one big but beautiful volume. Which also doubles as a weapon in case someone breaks into your house to steal all of your comic books.

BATMAN: BLACK AND WHITE STATUE BY ED MCGUINESS

Not to take anything away from its predecessors, but this one is possibly one of the coolest statues in the series yet.

BLACKEST NIGHT SERIES 2 ACTION FIGURES

In case you haven’t heard, this year’s big summer event will be BLACKEST NIGHT. DC continues to build up the anticipation by releasing the second series of related action figures including: Black Lantern Martian Manhunter, John Stewart, Sinestro Corps member Kryb, and the mysterious Indigo Lantern.

BOWEN DESIGNS KRAVEN THE HUNTER STATUE

This looks like a very nice sculpt right from the classic Romita Sr. days, and would make an excellent addition to any Spider-fan’s collection.

BOWEN DESIGNS HULKBUSTER IRON MAN STATUE

If the mini bust they did is any indication, then this full size statue is sure to impress. Designed by the same people, The Kucharek Brothers, this is Iron Man on ‘roids still riding the gravy train of popularity granted to him by the movie. If you happen to have a Hulk statue, standing the two next to one another would be quite imposing.

COVER GIRLS OF THE DCU: BLACK CANARY STATUE

Barbie has nothing on this blond bombshell, appearing here in this beautiful sculpture by Jack Mathews based on the art of Adam Hughes.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS 4.0: EBERRON CAMPAIGN GUIDE

A new campaign setting for D&D, yay! The Eberron campaign originally came out of a fan contest to create a new world, and was a huge hit. It will be interesting to see how they’ve modified it for the new rules.

FUTURAMA BENDABLE FIGURES BOX SET

These look like a really fun item for any fan of the dearly departed show. Whatever happened to bendy figures anyway? They’re cool.

GHOSTBUSTERS T-SHIRTS

I’m not even going to bother with the clichéd “Who You Gonna Call” joke, ‘cuz these damn retro style t-shirts are cool enough on their own.

GREEN LANTER 1/4th SCALE MUSEUM QUALITY STATUE

This looks to be one of the best sculptures you’ll ever get of Hal Jordan. What makes it even better is that it comes with Ch’p! Dear departed Ch’p! Always a favourite. Buy it for Ch’p!

HEROES OF THE DCU: GREEN ARROW BUST

Because it just wouldn’t be right to out Black Canary on your mantle without her lapdog archer next to her. Based on the work of Carlos Pacheco as realized by Jean St. Jean.

LANTERN WEAR

BLACKEST NIGHT is coming! And what better way to celebrate than to go out and purchase:

Green Lantern graphix t-shirt

Black Lantern symbol hoody

Blue Lantern symbol hoody

LIVING DEAD DOLLS: CAPTAIN SPAULDING DOLL

Deranged people can look so cute when you turn them into a doll. I like it when companies try new things with horror; there isn’t too much out there, so it’s nice to see variety. All this doll is missing is interchangeable hands where he can flip you the bird. On a side note: if you haven’t seen HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES or THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, please do so, as they are wonderfully deranged.

MARVEL SUPER-HERO SQUAD / WOLVERINE SUPER HERO SQUAD 2 PACKS

These fun little figures are perfect for kids of any age, and feature a wide assortment of all your favourite Marvel characters.

STAR TREK COSTUMES

With the upcoming Star Trek film hitting theatres and making every Trekkie young and old drool all over themselves, Previews has the perfect items to quench your thirst (and if you know Elfsar’s very own Thomas, these would make great gifts for his geek-filled heart).

Costumes:

Star Trek: The Next Generation Deluxe Shirts

Star Trek: The Next Generation Deluxe Jumpsuits

Star Trek: The Original Series Deluxe Shirts

Star Trek: The Original Series Deluxe Dresses

Other items:

The Next Generation – Locutus of Borg and Worf Masks

The Original Series – Alien Masks (Balok, Mugato, and Gorn)

Star Trek: The Original Series Spock Ears

STAR TREK: USS ENTERPRISE BOTTLE OPENER

Now here’s a nifty little tool for anyone who has even the most passing interest in Star Trek. Who doesn’t want to pop the top of a beer with the Enterprise. Need I say more?

STAR TREK: TIBERIUS & RED SHIRT COLOGNE FOR MEN

Now you can smell like Shatner, or a… Red shirt? Hmmm. This fascinates me, to see just what comes with a new Star Trek movie. Seeing as they are sexing things up, I guess they have to promote that very clean image. If you’re a die hard fan, you can’t go another day without spritzing a little Tiberius on yourself before you go out.

STREET FIGHTER: KEN 12-INCH RESIN STATUE

The Street Fighter fan always gets his pockets emptied when picking up some cool new statue to celebrate their love for the classic game. Now a comparatively inexpensive statue featuring one of the games most celebrated characters. This 12 inch resin statue looks pretty damn sweet, and as you know these are usually a one shot deal so don’t miss out.

“THOR CRUSH” BLACK TEE

You know, of all the heroes you don’t see all that many Thor shirts. If you like Thor pick one up or he will smite thee. Plus, this also just so happens to have the wonderful art of Oliver Coipel.

ZATANNA 1:6 SCALE DELUXE COLLECTOR FIGURE

Emosewa! It’s about time that the mistress of magic got her own deluxe figure. To answer the most important question, yes, she comes with fishnets.
