BATGIRL #8
Written by
Bryan Q. Miller. Illustrated by Lee Garbett & Trevor Scott. Cover by
Phil Noto.
A two part
tale which sees one-time sweethearts and former Batman sidekicks
Stephanie Brown and Tim Drake team-up in their new costumed identities,
Batgirl and Red Robin. Their story continues in this month’s RED ROBIN
#10. (And
how annoyed will anyone who does not read Elfbytes and only gets RED
ROBIN be when they can’t figure out what’s going on? … mind you it’s the
least they deserve for not reading Elfbytes.)
BATMAN #697
Written by
Tony Daniel. Illustrated by Tony Daniel & Sandu Florea. Cover by Tony
Daniel.
The
identity of Gotham’s new crime lord, The Black Mask, is finally
revealed! Jason Todd? Hush? Read this issue to find out just who it is.
BATMAN AND ROBIN #10
Written by
Grant Morrison. Illustrated by Andy Clarke & Scott Hanna. Cover by Frank
Quitely. Variant cover by Andy Clarke.
You never
know where Grant Morrison is going to zig instead zag, but it looks like
this arc might begin to bring some of his many plot threads together.
Damian and Dick look like they’re going to be on opposite sides of the
fence, due to interference from Damian’s mother, Talia al Ghul. Will
that mean a change in the title, or will the new dynamic duo be able to
work things out? And does
Talia have a darker motive or is she just looking for a bat fight?
BLACKEST NIGHT #8
Written by
Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert, & Joe Prado.
Cover by Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert, & Joe Prado. Variant cover by Rodolfo
Migilari. Sketch variant cover by Ivan Reis.
This
over-sized issue wraps up the BLACKEST NIGHT epic, so make sure you pick
it up to learn what the future holds for the heroes of the DC Universe.
BOOSTER GOLD #30
Written by
Dan Jurgens. Illustrated by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund. Cover by Dan
Jurgens & Norm Rapmund.
Booster
Gold’s journeys across the time stream takes him on a mission to save
his sister, but things might not be the same if he succeeds in rescuing
her.
DONG
XOAI VIETNAM 1965 HC
Written
& illustrated by Joe Kubert. Cover by Joe Kubert.
One of
the original greats writes and illustrates this gritty war story, based
on years of personal research and interviews conducted with the
survivors of one of America’s most infamous botched special ops. When a
detachment of US Special Forces gets cornered on a recon mission in the
town of Dong Xoai, their struggle to get out with their lives will make
BLACK HAWK DOWN look like a picnic with Grandma.
FIRST WAVE #1 (of 6)
Written by
Brian Azzarello. Illustrated by Rags Morales. Cover by J.G. Jones.
Variant cover by Neal Adams.
DC’s brand
new pulp universe promises lots of excitement, as Doc Savage, the
Spirit, the Blackhawks, and Batman all share the same brave new world.
No super powers, only heroes who are willing to do whatever it takes to
make the world a better place. And with Batman wielding dual automatics,
you know anything is possible. The recent BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE one-shot was
pretty damn good, and an excellent prelude, but it will be wonderful to
see Brian Azzarello write the Spirit (especially after the truly
horrible SPIRIT movie). With Azzarello behind the helm, and Morales on
artistic duties, this series should be spectacular.
This is
a must read!
GREEN ARROW #31
Written
by J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Diogenes Neves.
Cover by
Mauro Cascioli. Variant cover by Mike Mayhew.
Spinning directly out of the events of CRY FOR JUSTICE, Ollie finds
himself on the run from his fellow heroes and trying to reconcile his
guilt over what he’s done. I’m thinking the League caught him trying on
Black Canary’s costume, but that’s just me.
GREEN LANTERN #52
Written by
Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy. Cover by
Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy. Variant cover by Shane Davis & Sandra
Hope.
This issue
leads directly into the BLACKEST NIGHT finale, and although the
solicitation reveals no details, DC assures us that we don’t want to
miss this one.
GREEN LANTERN CORPS #46
Written by
Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman. Cover
by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman. Variant cover by Rodolfo Migilari.
The
all-out final battle between the GLC and Nekron’s Black Lanterns
happens in this over-sized issue that sets the stage for the final
chapters in GREEN LANTERN #52 and BLACKEST NIGHT #8. A must for anyone
who has been enjoying this kick-ass event!
JONAH HEX #53
Written by
Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Billy Tucci. Cover by
Billy Tucci.
This
month’s tale features the always stunning artwork of Billy Tucci, and
promises to contain pretty ladies, mean gunslingers, and the old west
mayhem you’ve come to expect in this book.
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #43
Written
by James Robinson. Illustrated by Mark Bagley & Rob Hunter. Cover by
Mark Bagley & Rob Hunter. Variant cover by Mike Mayhew.
Robinson continues the most impressive and promising revamp of the JLA
since Morrison had them usurped by Martians. Not only is Robinson
redefining the League, but he has created a great atmosphere to delve
into how the heroes themselves will perceive and shape these changes. If
Robinson’s run is even half as good as CRY FOR JUSTICE, it’ll be one of
the best things you read all year.
JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL SPECIAL #1 (one-shot)
Written by
James Robinson & J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Mike Mayhew. Cover by Mauro
Cascioli. Variant cover by Mike Mayhew.
Fallout
from the exceptional CRY FOR JUSTICE mini series has torn the league in
half, and now the fractured remnants are left to resolve the issues
surrounding a stunning and controversial act by Green Arrow.
JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE OF ARSENAL #1 (one-shot)
Written by
J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Geraldo Borges & Marlo Alquiza. Cover by Greg
Horn. Variant cover by Mike Mayhew.
Roy
begins the long road back after awaking from his coma, short an arm and
overwhelmed with inner turmoil and depression. I think it’s pretty safe
to say that this is not going to be the happiest book of the year.
RED ROBIN #10
Written by
Christopher Yost. Illustrated by Marcus To & Ray McCarthy. Cover by
Marcus To & Ray McCarthy.
The
continuation of the story that began in this month’s BATGIRL #8, Red
Robin and Batgirl must put aside their differences to save the members
of the Bat-family from yet another deadly attack by Ra’s al Ghul.
SUPERMAN: LAST STAND OF NEW KRYPTON #1 (of 3)
Written
by James Robinson & Sterling Gates. Illustrated by Pete Woods. Cover by
Andy Kubert. Variant cover by Marcos Marz.
Two
Maniacs fight for control of Kandor, the former Bottle City, and neither
Brainiac nor Zod are all that concerned with whether Earth survives
their temper tantrums. Can the Super Gang (that’s Superman, Super Girl,
Super Boy and the Legion of Super Heroes) save the day? And why are they
excluding Super Dave Osborn from all their fun? This issue is also
evidently the first part of the new “Brainiac and the Legion of
Super-Heroes” cross-over, continuing in ADVENTURE COMICS #8 & #9,
SUPERGIRL #51, AND SUPERMAN #698.
WONDER WOMAN #42 (a.k.a. #597)
Written by
Gail Simone. Illustrated by Nicola Scott & Doug Hazlewood. Cover by
Nicola Scott & Doug Hazlewood.
Gail
Simone has spent the last two plus years re-invigorating this book, and
now re-unites with the fantastically talented Nicola Scott for a tale
that brings back a long forgotten W.W. foe.
BATMAN: LONG SHADOWS HC
Written by
Judd Winick. Illustrated by Ed Benes, Mark Bagley, & Rob Hunter. Cover
by J.G. Jones.
Judd
Winick can be hit or miss with most readers, but his take on the early
days of Dick Grayson’s turn as Batman is a compelling read that holds
true to both Dick’s character and the Bat’s legacy. Bat-fans will be
pleased. Plus, make note that this volume features Mark Bagley’s first
regular DC post-TRINITY art work.
BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM VOL. 1 HC – HUSH MONEY
Written by
Paul Dini. Illustrated by Dustin Nguyen & Derek Fridolfs.
Sad that
Greg Rucka and Batwoman kicked Dini and Nguyen off of Detective? Don’t
be. DC gave the pair a whole new title to play with, and they ran with
it, giving us a fantastic new Batman ongoing that took a more street
level look at Batman’s relationship with the police. If you’ve been
waiting for the hardcover to pick it up, here’s your chance!
CRISIS ON MULTIPLE EARTHS VOL 5. TP
Written by
Gerry Conway. Illustrated by Dick Dillin, George Perez, and others.
Cover by George Perez.
Yes sir,
we’re up to five volumes now on this collection that brings us the
classic crossovers featuring the JSA, the JLA, and George Perez in his
prime.
JONAH HEX: NO WAY BACK HC
Written by
Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Tony Dezuniga.
Gray &
Palmiotti’s monthly JONAH HEX series is consistently fantastic, and with
the incomparable Tony Dezuniga along for the ride, this new graphic
novel is sure to more than live up to the usual high standards. There is
sure to be increasing attention on Hex this year as the date of the new
movie draws closer, and this tale illuminating his troubled past will
make for an excellent addition to any library.
POWER GIRL: A NEW BEGINNING TP
Written by
Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Amanda Conner.
The first
six issues of this wonderful new series are collected, and provide you
the perfect opportunity to discover the fun and ridiculously high level
of creative quality this series delivers. Yes, there are boobs in it -
BIG boobs, but it’s really not about the boobs. PG versus an alien
tyrant who’s holding Manhattan hostage to get her to marry him? PG
fighting off an alien invasion consisting of a trio of hot chicks hell
bent on partying? With priceless stuff like this, you’ll be pleasantly
surprised how much you enjoy this book (unless you’re just looking for
the boobs, in which case you might be disappointed, and should probably
check out GRIMM FAIRYTALES or TAROT).
SECRET SIX: DEPTHS TP
Written by
Gail Simone. Illustrated by Nicola Scott, Carlos Rodriguez, and others.
Cover by Daniel Luvisi.
This
series contains the perfect combination of action, dark humour, and
things that are just plain wrong. This second volume collects the
excellent stories from issues #8 through #14 of the monthly series, and
is the perfect chance for you to discover a new favourite.
SUPERBOY: THE BOY OF STEEL HC
Written by
Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Francis Manapul.
One of
the least surprising returns in recent history gives way to one of the
most gorgeously illustrated and poignant stories of 2009, as Superboy
settles down in Smallville to make sense of his new shot at life. Even
if Johns wasn’t at the top of his game here (and he is), the book is
worth getting for Manapul’s lush artwork alone.
DC - VERTIGO
AMERICA
VAMPIRE #1
Written by
Scott Snyder & Stephen King. Illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque. Cover by
Rafael Albuquerque. Variant cover by Jim Lee.
Vertigo’s
newest series looks like it should be fantastic! Spread across different
eras, from the wild west to the roaring twenties, this series tells the
tale of a new breed of vampire, one that is truly American. Although
this new series is not his own creation, King has been quite active in
comic books the past few years, and his involvement will surely be the
stamp of approval that will bring many more fans than this books would
get without him. I mean, Stephen King doing vampire mythology! How can
that possibly not be money? Strongly recommended!
THE
EXECUTOR HC
Written by
Jon Evans. Illustrated by Andrea Mutti.
This month
brings us yet another in the series of fantastic Vertigo Crime books. Or
as some of us in the store would say, “Another chance to feed this
relentless addiction to insanely good crime books.” The latest offering
is the story of a retired pro athlete who must return to his home town
when named the executor of his high school sweetheart’s will. It’s safe
to assume he finds out that things are not what they seem and her death
will unravel a mystery all while he deals with his past. Sure you can
see the plot coming a mile away, but with the talent they have on these
books it doesn’t matter because they grab you by the throat and enthral
you.
THE
SANDMAN VOL. 1 TP: PRELUDES & NOCTURNES (new edition)
Written by
Neil Gaiman. Illustrated by Sam Keith, Mike Dringenberg, and Malcolm
Jones III. Cover by Dave McKean.
It’s hard
to imagine that there are many comic book fans out there who haven’t
read Gaiman’s modern classic, but if you’re one of those who hasn’t
experienced the tale now is the ideal time to discover what you’ve
missed. This new edition collects the first eight issues, including the
first appearance of Dream’s perky older sister Death, and features the
re-mastered and re-coloured artwork from the recent ABSOLUTE edition,
which will greatly enhance the story.
DC
- WILDSTORM
EX MACHINA
#49

Brian K. Vaughan. Illustrated by Tony Harris. Cover by Tony Harris.
The
penultimate issue promises to reveal all of the unanswered questions
from the series as next issue’s big finale finally approaches.
GOD OF WAR
#1 (of 6)
Written by
Marv Wolfman. Illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino. Cover by Andy Park.
Did you
play God of War and think “Gosh! Kratos would make such an awesome comic
character”? Well, WildStorm clearly thought so too. And they bring in a
big gun to give us Kratos’ adventures: Mr. CRISIS himself: Marv Wolfman.
SPARTA:
USA #1 (of 6)
Written by
David Lapham. Illustrated by Johnny Timmons. Cover by Johnny Timmons.
Variant Cover by David Lapham.
This new
limited series has an interesting premise, and knowing Lapham, will
likely have some good twists to it. Sparta is the perfect town; so
perfect that no one ever dares to leave. Except for one man, who makes a
sudden and unexpected return years after his disappearance, causing the
seemingly idyllic situation in Sparta to suddenly encounter some serious
problems.
EX MACHINA
DELUXE EDITION BOOK 3 HC
Written by
Brian K. Vaughan. Illustrated by Tony Harris, John Paul Leon, and
others.
If
you’re already picking up this series in this format, then you
definitely need to get this. If you’re not, this is the perfect way to
read this incredible series and you still need to get this (and the
previous volumes) right away. This volume collects issues #21 to 29 of
this stunning series, with EX MACHINA: INSIDE THE MACHINE, and EX
MACHINA SPECIAL #3
