ARCHAIA ENTERTAINMENT

THE KILLER: MODUS VIVENDI #1

Written by Matz. Illustrated by Luc Jacamon.

The most enthralling hitman saga is back! The hardcover volumes for this series take forever, so get this series monthly: trust me it’s worth it. More drama and action than the best HBO show, THE KILLER is perfect crime fiction. In this newest volume, our favourite hitman is back at work, but the question is what brought him back from his retired life at his Sanctuary in Venezuela? And why is one of his targets a devoted and selfless Nun? Do not miss this! When the David Fincher movie comes out (yes he bought the rights, chubs) you’ll be regretting not taking my advice and checking out this phenomenal series earlier. Mark my words.

ARCHIE COMICS PUBLICATIONS

THE ARCHIE WEDDING TP: WILL YOU MARRY ME?

Written by Michael Uslan. Illustrated by Stan Goldberg.

Now you can read the stories that caused such a commotion last year, as the entire ‘Archie gets married’ tales are collected into one volume. Collecting issues #600 - #606, this is likely the biggest event in Archie comics history, so see for yourself who he chooses.

ASPEN MLT INC.

ASPEN SHOWCASE: EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT: ROSE #1

Written by David Wohl. Illustrated by Randy Green. Covers by Joe Benitez and Randy Green.

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT: IRIS was a surprise hit when it came out last year as the hard-edged action belied its ridiculous title. Now, building on that title’s success, Aspen brings us the story of yet another Executive Assistant/Assassin, illustrated by fan fave Randy Green. Don’t miss it.

AVATAR PRESS

ABSOLUTION #0 - #6: SERIES BAG SET

Written by Christos Gage. Illustrated by Roberto Viacava. Covers by Jacen Burrows.

If you like your super-heroes violent and conflicted, this is the book for you. Imagine the Punisher turned up to eleven, and you’ll get the idea of this recently wrapped up series. This set allows you to read the entire story, without having to wait for the collected edition.

FEVRE DREAM #1

Written by George R. R. Martin. Illustrated by Rafa Lopez. Cover by Felipe Massafera.

Are you a fan of George R. R. Martin’s novels? Do you wish he would do comics? Well, your wish has been granted. Quite a few years ago, Martin wrote a spectacular novel set in 1857 and dealing with Vampires. Well, Avatar snapped up the rights to it and is giving us the chance to read this masterpiece in comic form. I repeat: George R. R. Martin. Vampires. Get it.

BOOM! STUDIOS

DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP?: DUST TO DUST #1 (of 12)

Written by Chris Roberson. Illustrated by Robert Adler.

If you’re a fan of either Philip K. Dick’s novel DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? or Ridley Scott’s film BLADE RUNNER, you’ll likely be interested in this title. This original series will serve as a companion series and prequel to Boom!’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s classic sci-fi novel DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? Set before the time of Deckard, “Dust to Dust” will tell the story of the years following the war, and the increasing problems with the artificial life forms that have been created. Author Chris Roberson is quickly making a name for himself in the science fiction scene, so this should be high quality stuff.

NOLA TP

Written by Chris Gorak & Pierlugi Cothran. Illustrated by Damian Couceiro.

This fantastic series tells the story of one woman’s revenge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This is definitely worth reading.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

GREEN HORNET #1

Written by Kevin Smith. Illustrated by Jonathan Lau. Covers by J. Scott Campbell, John Cassaday, Alex Ross, and Stephen Segovia.

The classic pulp character makes his return under the direction of Kevin Smith in this exciting new series. Kevin Smith’s comic books have been pretty damn good, when not plagued by extreme delays, and Dynamite is making a big deal of the fact that all the scripts have been completed and turned in prior to solicitation for this book. If that’s true, this should be well worth reading. And with all the problems that the (unrelated) Green Hornet film is having, it’s even more exciting that this series is coming out.

I.D.W. PUBLISHING

THE A-TEAM: SHOTGUN WEDDING #1 & #2

Written by Joe Carnahan & Tom Waltz. Illustrated by Stephen Mooney. Covers by John K. Snyder.

Just in time for the upcoming movie, this series tells the tale of everyone’s favourite undercover special-ops team, the A-Team. The team is looking for some well earned R&R, but threats to the daughter of an important government official change their plans.

THE A-TEAM: WAR STORIES: B.A. (one-shot)

Written by Chuck Dixon & Erik Burnham. Illustrated by Casey Maloney. Cover by Michael Gaydos.

THE A-TEAM: WAR STORIES: HANNIBAL (one-shot)

Written by Chuck Dixon & Erik Burnham. Illustrated by Hugo Petrus. Cover by Michael Gaydos.

And to accompany the new limited series and get everyone prepared for the movie, this series of one-shots will focus on each of the team members. This month spotlights B.A. and team leader Hannibal.

GHOSTBUSTERS: DISPLACED AGGRESSION TP

Written by Scott Lobdell. Illustrated by Ilias Kyriazis. Cover by Nick Runge.

A must for Ghostbusters fans, this book collects the four issue limited series that saw the Ghostbusters flung across time and having to find their way back to the present. Who couldn’t like the fact that the first issue shows Peter Venkman trapped in the old west as a cowboy ghost exterminator?

LAST RESORT TP

Written by Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Giancarlo Caracuzzo. Cover by Darwyn Cooke.

Gray & Palmiotti (JONAH HEX, POWER GIRL) let loose with an over the top tale of mayhem and disaster set in paradise.

ONI PRESS

GHOST PROJEKT #1

Written by Joe Harris. Illustrated by Steve Rolston.

A new series about a Russian agent and an American weapons inspector investigating some former Soviet secret projects and the dangers they pose. Rolston’s work is always enjoyable, and this looks like it could be a really interesting book.  Worth checking out.

DARK HORSE COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #33

Written by Brad Meltzer. Illustrated by Georges Jeanty & Andy Owens. Covers by Jo Chen and Georges Jeanty.

If you’re not a big follower of internet comic news sites, you likely still don’t know who “the big bad” Twilight is, but after this issue the whole world will know who has been making life so difficult for Buffy and the slayer legion throughout Season Eight. This story arc is a must for even casual Buffy-verse fans, as everything falls into place and all begins to be revealed!

THE GUILD #1 (of 3)

Written by Felicia Day. Illustrated by Jim Rugg. Covers by Georges Jeanty and Cory Nord.

Ever hear of The Guild? No? It’s a crazy awesome web series starring none other than Felicia Day (DR. HORRIBLE) as a regular girl addicted to an online World of Warcraft-like game with her … interesting … Guild-mates. Now you have a chance to enjoy this hilarious series in comic book form courtesy of Dark Horse!

THE TERMINATOR #1 (of 3)

Written by Zack Whedon. Illustrated by Andy MacDonald. Cover by Massimo Carnevale.

This new series explores the past of Kyle Reese (John Connor’s daddy) in the future and his struggle to survive the horrors of Skynet, before eventually being sent back in time to become the father of the man who saves him. Assuming you haven’t OD’ed on the Terminator-verse after the recent movie and TV series then this might be worth a look.

B.P.R.D. VOL. 12 TP: WAR ON FROGS

Written by Mike Mignola & John Arcudi. Illustrated by Guy Davis, Karl Moline, Peter Snejbjerg and others.

Mignola & Arcudi have been building towards some big events in the world of Hellboy & the B.P.R.D., and this volume fills in some of the gaps and helps to answer some of the questions. Likely not the best place for new readers to begin, but an essential piece of the puzzle for long time fans.

STAR WARS: INVASION VOL. 1 TP - REFUGEES

Written by Tom Taylor. Illustrated by Colin Wilson. Cover by Jo Chen.

The “New Jedi Order” series of novels was an incredible shot in the arm for the Star Wars saga. Set 25 years after episode 4, NJO dealt with the struggles of Luke Skywalker and his gang as they fought off an extragalactic invasion. It was an excellent and exciting series that was, sadly, not given much exposure in the comics world. Until now. Collecting issues 0-6 of the “Star Wars: Invasion” series, this is the chance for Star Wars fans of all ages to jump on board.

DC COMICS HIGHLIGHTSTS

BATGIRL #8

Written by Bryan Q. Miller. Illustrated by Lee Garbett & Trevor Scott. Cover by Phil Noto.

A two part tale which sees one-time sweethearts and former Batman sidekicks Stephanie Brown and Tim Drake team-up in their new costumed identities, Batgirl and Red Robin. Their story continues in this month’s RED ROBIN #10. (And how annoyed will anyone who does not read Elfbytes and only gets RED ROBIN be when they can’t figure out what’s going on? … mind you it’s the least they deserve for not reading Elfbytes.)

BATMAN #697

Written by Tony Daniel. Illustrated by Tony Daniel & Sandu Florea. Cover by Tony Daniel.

The identity of Gotham’s new crime lord, The Black Mask, is finally revealed! Jason Todd? Hush? Read this issue to find out just who it is.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #10

Written by Grant Morrison. Illustrated by Andy Clarke & Scott Hanna. Cover by Frank Quitely. Variant cover by Andy Clarke.

You never know where Grant Morrison is going to zig instead zag, but it looks like this arc might begin to bring some of his many plot threads together. Damian and Dick look like they’re going to be on opposite sides of the fence, due to interference from Damian’s mother, Talia al Ghul. Will that mean a change in the title, or will the new dynamic duo be able to work things out? And does Talia have a darker motive or is she just looking for a bat fight?

BLACKEST NIGHT #8

Written by Geoff Johns.  Illustrated by Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert, & Joe Prado. Cover by Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert, & Joe Prado. Variant cover by Rodolfo Migilari. Sketch variant cover by Ivan Reis.

This over-sized issue wraps up the BLACKEST NIGHT epic, so make sure you pick it up to learn what the future holds for the heroes of the DC Universe.

BOOSTER GOLD #30

Written by Dan Jurgens. Illustrated by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund. Cover by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund.

Booster Gold’s journeys across the time stream takes him on a mission to save his sister, but things might not be the same if he succeeds in rescuing her.

DONG XOAI VIETNAM 1965 HC

Written & illustrated by Joe Kubert. Cover by Joe Kubert.

One of the original greats writes and illustrates this gritty war story, based on years of personal research and interviews conducted with the survivors of one of America’s most infamous botched special ops. When a detachment of US Special Forces gets cornered on a recon mission in the town of Dong Xoai, their struggle to get out with their lives will make BLACK HAWK DOWN look like a picnic with Grandma.

FIRST WAVE #1 (of 6)

Written by Brian Azzarello. Illustrated by Rags Morales. Cover by J.G. Jones. Variant cover by Neal Adams.

DC’s brand new pulp universe promises lots of excitement, as Doc Savage, the Spirit, the Blackhawks, and Batman all share the same brave new world. No super powers, only heroes who are willing to do whatever it takes to make the world a better place. And with Batman wielding dual automatics, you know anything is possible. The recent BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE one-shot was pretty damn good, and an excellent prelude, but it will be wonderful to see Brian Azzarello write the Spirit (especially after the truly horrible SPIRIT movie). With Azzarello behind the helm, and Morales on artistic duties, this series should be spectacular. This is a must read!

GREEN ARROW #31

Written by J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Diogenes Neves. Cover by Mauro Cascioli. Variant cover by Mike Mayhew.

Spinning directly out of the events of CRY FOR JUSTICE, Ollie finds himself on the run from his fellow heroes and trying to reconcile his guilt over what he’s done. I’m thinking the League caught him trying on Black Canary’s costume, but that’s just me.

GREEN LANTERN #52

Written by Geoff Johns.  Illustrated by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy. Cover by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy. Variant cover by Shane Davis & Sandra Hope.

This issue leads directly into the BLACKEST NIGHT finale, and although the solicitation reveals no details, DC assures us that we don’t want to miss this one.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #46

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman. Cover by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman. Variant cover by Rodolfo Migilari.

The all-out final battle between the GLC and Nekron’s  Black Lanterns happens in this over-sized issue that sets the stage for the final chapters in GREEN LANTERN #52 and BLACKEST NIGHT #8. A must for anyone who has been enjoying this kick-ass event!

JONAH HEX #53

Written by Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Billy Tucci. Cover by Billy Tucci.

This month’s tale features the always stunning artwork of Billy Tucci, and promises to contain pretty ladies, mean gunslingers, and the old west mayhem you’ve come to expect in this book.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #43

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Mark Bagley & Rob Hunter. Cover by Mark Bagley & Rob Hunter. Variant cover by Mike Mayhew.

Robinson continues the most impressive and promising revamp of the JLA since Morrison had them usurped by Martians. Not only is Robinson redefining the League, but he has created a great atmosphere to delve into how the heroes themselves will perceive and shape these changes. If Robinson’s run is even half as good as CRY FOR JUSTICE, it’ll be one of the best things you read all year.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL SPECIAL #1 (one-shot)

Written by James Robinson & J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Mike Mayhew. Cover by Mauro Cascioli. Variant cover by Mike Mayhew.

Fallout from the exceptional CRY FOR JUSTICE mini series has torn the league in half, and now the fractured remnants are left to resolve the issues surrounding a stunning and controversial act by Green Arrow.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE OF ARSENAL #1 (one-shot)

Written by J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Geraldo Borges & Marlo Alquiza. Cover by Greg Horn. Variant cover by Mike Mayhew.

Roy begins the long road back after awaking from his coma, short an arm and overwhelmed with inner turmoil and depression. I think it’s pretty safe to say that this is not going to be the happiest book of the year.

RED ROBIN #10

Written by Christopher Yost. Illustrated by Marcus To & Ray McCarthy. Cover by Marcus To & Ray McCarthy.

The continuation of the story that began in this month’s BATGIRL #8, Red Robin and Batgirl must put aside their differences to save the members of the Bat-family from yet another deadly attack by Ra’s al Ghul.

SUPERMAN: LAST STAND OF NEW KRYPTON #1 (of 3)

Written by James Robinson & Sterling Gates. Illustrated by Pete Woods. Cover by Andy Kubert. Variant cover by Marcos Marz.

Two Maniacs fight for control of Kandor, the former Bottle City, and neither Brainiac nor Zod are all that concerned with whether Earth survives their temper tantrums. Can the Super Gang (that’s Superman, Super Girl, Super Boy and the Legion of Super Heroes) save the day? And why are they excluding Super Dave Osborn from all their fun? This issue is also evidently the first part of the new “Brainiac and the Legion of Super-Heroes” cross-over, continuing in ADVENTURE COMICS #8 & #9, SUPERGIRL #51, AND SUPERMAN #698.

WONDER WOMAN #42 (a.k.a. #597)

Written by Gail Simone. Illustrated by Nicola Scott & Doug Hazlewood. Cover by Nicola Scott & Doug Hazlewood.

Gail Simone has spent the last two plus years re-invigorating this book, and now re-unites with the fantastically talented Nicola Scott for a tale that brings back a long forgotten W.W. foe.

BATMAN: LONG SHADOWS HC

Written by Judd Winick. Illustrated by Ed Benes, Mark Bagley, & Rob Hunter. Cover by J.G. Jones.

Judd Winick can be hit or miss with most readers, but his take on the early days of Dick Grayson’s turn as Batman is a compelling read that holds true to both Dick’s character and the Bat’s legacy. Bat-fans will be pleased. Plus, make note that this volume features Mark Bagley’s first regular DC post-TRINITY art work.

BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM VOL. 1 HC – HUSH MONEY

Written by Paul Dini. Illustrated by Dustin Nguyen & Derek Fridolfs.

Sad that Greg Rucka and Batwoman kicked Dini and Nguyen off of Detective? Don’t be. DC gave the pair a whole new title to play with, and they ran with it, giving us a fantastic new Batman ongoing that took a more street level look at Batman’s relationship with the police. If you’ve been waiting for the hardcover to pick it up, here’s your chance!

CRISIS ON MULTIPLE EARTHS VOL 5. TP

Written by Gerry Conway. Illustrated by Dick Dillin, George Perez, and others. Cover by George Perez.

Yes sir, we’re up to five volumes now on this collection that brings us the classic crossovers featuring the JSA, the JLA, and George Perez in his prime.

JONAH HEX: NO WAY BACK HC

Written by Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Tony Dezuniga.

Gray & Palmiotti’s monthly JONAH HEX series is consistently fantastic, and with the incomparable Tony Dezuniga along for the ride, this new graphic novel is sure to more than live up to the usual high standards. There is sure to be increasing attention on Hex this year as the date of the new movie draws closer, and this tale illuminating his troubled past will make for an excellent addition to any library.

POWER GIRL: A NEW BEGINNING TP

Written by Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Amanda Conner.

The first six issues of this wonderful new series are collected, and provide you the perfect opportunity to discover the fun and ridiculously high level of creative quality this series delivers. Yes, there are boobs in it - BIG boobs, but it’s really not about the boobs. PG versus an alien tyrant who’s holding Manhattan hostage to get her to marry him? PG fighting off an alien invasion consisting of a trio of hot chicks hell bent on partying? With priceless stuff like this, you’ll be pleasantly surprised how much you enjoy this book (unless you’re just looking for the boobs, in which case you might be disappointed, and should probably check out GRIMM FAIRYTALES or TAROT).

SECRET SIX: DEPTHS TP

Written by Gail Simone. Illustrated by Nicola Scott, Carlos Rodriguez, and others. Cover by Daniel Luvisi.

This series contains the perfect combination of action, dark humour, and things that are just plain wrong. This second volume collects the excellent stories from issues #8 through #14 of the monthly series, and is the perfect chance for you to discover a new favourite.

SUPERBOY: THE BOY OF STEEL HC

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Francis Manapul.

One of the least surprising returns in recent history gives way to one of the most gorgeously illustrated and poignant stories of 2009, as Superboy settles down in Smallville to make sense of his new shot at life. Even if Johns wasn’t at the top of his game here (and he is), the book is worth getting for Manapul’s lush artwork alone.

DC - VERTIGO

AMERICA VAMPIRE #1

Written by Scott Snyder & Stephen King. Illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque. Cover by Rafael Albuquerque. Variant cover by Jim Lee.

Vertigo’s newest series looks like it should be fantastic! Spread across different eras, from the wild west to the roaring twenties, this series tells the tale of a new breed of vampire, one that is truly American. Although this new series is not his own creation, King has been quite active in comic books the past few years, and his involvement will surely be the stamp of approval that will bring many more fans than this books would get without him. I mean, Stephen King doing vampire mythology!  How can that possibly not be money? Strongly recommended!

THE EXECUTOR HC

Written by Jon Evans. Illustrated by Andrea Mutti.

This month brings us yet another in the series of fantastic Vertigo Crime books. Or as some of us in the store would say, “Another chance to feed this relentless addiction to insanely good crime books.”  The latest offering is the story of a retired pro athlete who must return to his home town when named the executor of his high school sweetheart’s will. It’s safe to assume he finds out that things are not what they seem and her death will unravel a mystery all while he deals with his past. Sure you can see the plot coming a mile away, but with the talent they have on these books it doesn’t matter because they grab you by the throat and enthral you.

THE SANDMAN VOL. 1 TP: PRELUDES & NOCTURNES (new edition)

Written by Neil Gaiman. Illustrated by Sam Keith, Mike Dringenberg, and Malcolm Jones III. Cover by Dave McKean.

It’s hard to imagine that there are many comic book fans out there who haven’t read Gaiman’s modern classic, but if you’re one of those who hasn’t experienced the tale now is the ideal time to discover what you’ve missed. This new edition collects the first eight issues, including the first appearance of Dream’s perky older sister Death, and features the re-mastered and re-coloured artwork from the recent ABSOLUTE edition, which will greatly enhance the story.

DC - WILDSTORM

EX MACHINA #49

Written by Brian K. Vaughan. Illustrated by Tony Harris. Cover by Tony Harris.

The penultimate issue promises to reveal all of the unanswered questions from the series as next issue’s big finale finally approaches.

GOD OF WAR #1 (of 6)

Written by Marv Wolfman. Illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino. Cover by Andy Park.

Did you play God of War and think “Gosh! Kratos would make such an awesome comic character”? Well, WildStorm clearly thought so too. And they bring in a big gun to give us Kratos’ adventures: Mr. CRISIS himself: Marv Wolfman.

SPARTA: USA #1 (of 6)

Written by David Lapham. Illustrated by Johnny Timmons. Cover by Johnny Timmons. Variant Cover by David Lapham.

This new limited series has an interesting premise, and knowing Lapham, will likely have some good twists to it. Sparta is the perfect town; so perfect that no one ever dares to leave. Except for one man, who makes a sudden and unexpected return years after his disappearance, causing the seemingly idyllic situation in Sparta to suddenly encounter some serious problems.

EX MACHINA DELUXE EDITION BOOK 3 HC

Written by Brian K. Vaughan. Illustrated by Tony Harris, John Paul Leon, and others.

If you’re already picking up this series in this format, then you definitely need to get this. If you’re not, this is the perfect way to read this incredible series and you still need to get this (and the previous volumes) right away. This volume collects issues #21 to 29 of this stunning series, with EX MACHINA: INSIDE THE MACHINE, and EX MACHINA SPECIAL #3

The various DEAD @ 17 series have had their share of twists and turns, and this newest volume has our heroine Nara stuck in purgatory after the events of the previous tale.

HAUNT #6

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Greg Capullo & Todd McFarlane. Cover by Todd McFarlane.

In addition to the first trade paperback available this month, this stand alone issue is a great jumping on point for one of last year’s best new series.

INVINCIBLE #71

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Ryan Ottley & FCO Plascencia. Cover by Ryan Ottley & FCO Plascencia.

Long time readers have been anticipating this event since the first year of the title, and the new “Viltrumite War” arc beginning this issue will also be the ideal place for new readers to give this consistently enjoyable book a try.

SHUDDERTOWN #1

Written by Nick Spencer. Illustrated by Adam Geen. Cover by Adam Geen.

This new crime series looks like it should punch all the right buttons. A hard hitting mystery with some possible supernatural elements just to keep things interesting, and the preview artwork looks sharp. This one is definitely worth trying.

WITCHBLADE #136

Written by Ron Marz. Illustrated by Stjepan Sejic. Cover by Stjepan Sejic.

Hey guess what: Witchblade is STILL underappreciated as a comic that shrugged off its T & A beginnings and transformed itself into a pretty good crime/urban fantasy title. In this issue, Witchblade teams up with Aphrodite IV to take on Cyberforce’s big baddie Cyberdata.

HAUNT VOL.1 TP

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Greg Capullo, Ryan Ottley, & Todd McFarlane.

When the information about this series first came out, there was a lot of fear that we would be getting a rehash of McFarlane’s SPIDER-MAN stuff crossed with early SPAWN. Instead, we got an intriguing and well written series about a reluctant priest who bonds with the spirit of his dead brother to form a new superhero. HAUNT is pretty unique, and a fun ride if you take it for what it is: spies and superheroes. If you were late to the party, here’s your chance to climb aboard. At only $10 for this collection, it’s worth picking up and trying something new.

SPAWN ORIGINS: BOOK ONE HC

Written by Todd McFarlane, Alan Moore, Dave Sim, and Frank Miller. Illustrated by Todd McFarlane.

Looks like Spawn is getting the Deluxe Hardcover treatment as well. This book collects issues #1 - #8 and #10 - #13 of what can now be considered one of the most successful parts of Image’s launch years. The only thing that could make this collection better would be Neil Gaiman’s issue #9. Dang legal complications.

VIKING VOL. 1 HC: THE LONG COLD FIRE

Written by Ivan Brandon. Illustrated by Nic Klein.

The most violent criminal underworld in history brought to you by the amazing Ivan Brandon. It’s like a heist movie with Vikings. Do I need to say more than that? Great writing and great art. If you are a fan of crime comics or NORTHLANDERS you will want to check this out.

    MARVEL COMICS HIGHLIGHTSHTS

BREAKING INTO COMICS THE MARVEL WAY! #1 and #2 (of 2).

Written by CB Cebulski and numerous established writers. Illustrated by a host of new talent. Issue #1 cover by Matteo De Longis. Issue #2 cover by Lost Fish.

Cebulski showcases the work of 12 hopeful artists and provides commentary on how they got their work into the hands of an editor. A must for anyone who yearns to be a penniless artist like Ethan.

CABLE #24

Written by Duane Swierczynski. Illustrated by Paul Gulacy. Cover by Marko Djurdjevic.

This issue offers the conclusion to the “Homecoming” storyline, and leads directly into this month’s X-MEN: SECOND COMING.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #604

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Luke Ross. Cover by Gerald Parel.

As the two Caps fight it, out the poor Falcon stands alone against the terrorist Watchdog. And if that’s not enough for you, this issue features a back-up story about everyone’s favourite Rob Liefeld mistake, Nomad: Girl Without A World.

CLOAK & DAGGER #1 (one-shot)

Written by Stuart Moore. Illustrated by Mark Brooks. Cover by Mark Brooks.

After gaining exposure in books like RUNAWAYS and as part of the Dark X-Men in the recent “Utopia” storyline, it’s about time that the original mutant runaways Cloak and Dagger get their own space to shine in, even if it’s only a one shot. Any time they get more than a guest spot is a happy occasion indeed, so show the love while you can. And with Mark Brooks providing art for this one-shot, it should look fantastic.

DOOMWAR #2 (of 6)

Written by Jonathan Mayberry. Illustrated by Scott Eaton. Cover by John Romita Jr.

This self-contained event book looks like a great alternative to SIEGE and its numerous cross-overs, but I’ve gotta say the cover is possibly one of the worst examples of John Romita Jr.’s art I have ever seen. Ouch!

GIRL COMICS #1 (of 3)

Written by Trina Robbins, Devin Grayson, Ann Nocenti, G. Willow Wilson, Valerie D’Orazio, Lucy Knisley, Colleen Doran, and others. Illustrated by Stephanie Buscema, Ming Doyle, Nikki Cook, Molly Crabapple, Lucy Knisley, Colleen Doran, and others. Cover by Amanda Conner & Laura Martin.

It is great to see a project like this come along, with a plethora of fantastically talented female creators contributing, but part of me also wishes it wasn’t necessary. I understand the complications of the world we live in, but wish we could simply enjoy the work of a talented comic book creator without worrying about their gender or ethnicity. But regardless of that fact, there should be some excellent stuff in this three issue series that makes it worth picking up.

HERCULES: FALL OF AN AVENGER #1 (of 2)

Written by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente / AoA back-up written by Jeff Parker. Illustrated Ariel Olivetti / AoA back-up illustrated by Reilly Brown.

Greg Pak is officially the greatest mystery writer ever, even if he has never written an actual mystery. The first mystery: how he made Hercules cool. The second: how he sustained it in an ongoing monthly title. The third: why we have a two part Hercules Obituary. But the biggest mystery of all is how anyone can refer to Namor, Namora, Snowbird, Alflyse and Bruce Banner as an “All Star Cast”.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #24

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Salvador Larroca. Covers by Salvador Larroca and Patrick Zircher.

The final chapter of the “Stark: Disassembled” arc promises big changes, but just how big will those changes be, and will Tony Stark be able to survive them? Fraction & Larroca have done some excellent work on this book since it re-launched, and this issue looks to wrap up the past two years of work and set things up for an exciting future.

MILLAR & MCNIVEN’S NEMESIS #1

Written by Mark Millar. Illustrated by Steve McNiven. Cover by Steve McNiven.

Regardless of what you think of him, Mark Millar is at the point now that any new project of his becomes an event in and of itself. And despite McNiven’s refusal to sign some old Cross-Gen issue for Craig, his art work is always stunning to look at. Together they’re creative gold. Now they’re bringing us what is being hyped as the most intense books ever published by the big boys (which is saying something, as DC briefly publishes THE BOYS). The premise is simple enough: imagine the smartest, toughest, richest guy (like Batman) becoming a bad guy instead of a hero. Millar is giving McNiven a large pallet to work on, so this book should be a gorgeous book full of over the top chaos and bloody fun.

PET AVENGERS #1 (of 4)

Written by Chris Eliopoulos. Illustrated by Ig Guara & Chris Sotomayor. Cover by Ig Guara & Chris Sotomayor. Variant cover by Roger Langridge.

I am officially taking names. I want to know who the SOBs are that bought the first series featuring these flea bags. I’m going to smack them with a bag of wet cats. Damn it people this is what happens when you order without reading Elfbytes!

PRELUDE TO DEADPOOL CORPS #1 - #5 (of 5)

Written by Victor Gischler. Illustrated by Rob Liefeld (#1), Whilce Portacio (#2), Philip Bond (#3), Paco Medina (#4), and Kyle Baker (#5). Covers by Dave Johnson. Issue #1 variant cover by Ed McGuinness.

Leave it to Marvel to milk something until there isn’t a single drop left. Deadpool (a.k.a., the character that less than three years ago couldn’t even support a book he was co-starring in) gets five weekly issues starring the soon to be infamous Corps bearing his name-sake. This should be a lot of fun, and after the first issue, there are some excellent artists attached to this project.

SHE-HULK: SENSATIONAL #1 (one-shot)

Written by Peter David and Brian Reed. Illustrated by TBD and Iban Coello. Cover by Gary Frank.

Everyone’s favourite green giantess gets a one-shot book this month, with long time Shulkie scribes Peter David and Brian Reed writing tales. Too bad TBD is such a busy artist this month though.

SIEGE #3 (of 4))

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Olivier Coipel. Cover by Olivier Coipel. Variant covers by Gabriele Dell’Otto and Joe Quesada. Sketch variant by Joe Quesada.

It’s the penultimate chapter of SIEGE, the event that will change the Marvel universe forever. Wait, wasn’t SECRET INVASION, the event that would change the marvel universe forever? Or was that CIVIL WAR? Does anyone really believe this was 7 years in the making? Regardless, SIEGE is action packed and non-stop entertainment!

And don’t miss these other SIEGE tie-ins:

AVENGERS: THE INIATIVE #34

DARK AVENGERS #155

DARK WOLVERINE #84

MIGHTY AVENGERS #35

NEW AVENGERS #63

NEW MUTANTS #11

SIEGE: EMBEDDED #3 (of 4)

THOR #608

THUNDERBOLTS #142

SIF #1 (of 3)

Written by Kelly Sue Deconnick. Illustrated by TBD. Cover by Travel Foreman.

From the pages of THOR, long time supporting character Sif gets her very own one-shot. Although it’s unfortunate that this book isn’t rated high enough to have an artist yet, settling instead for the infamous TBD.

ULTIMATE COMICS NEW ULTIMATES #1

Written by Jeph Loeb. Illustrated by Frank Cho. Gatefold cover by Frank Cho. Variant cover by Leinil Francis Yu.

As the Ultimate Universe begins to be put back together (for us the reader), it continues to be in peril of total destruction (for the characters living in it). With Thor missing in the aftermath of ULTIMATUM, Loki seizes the chance to unleash the darkest and most vile corners of Asgard upon Earth, and the best of the surviving heroes must band together to protect their world. No guarantees from Marvel, but I’m hoping that Ultimate Living Lightning will make the grade.

X-FACTOR FOREVER #1

Written by Louise Simonson. Illustrated by Dan Panosian. Cover by Dan Panosian.

First, Chris Claremont was given free reign to return to play in the sandbox he virtually created, with the launch of X-MEN FOREVER. Now, long time X-Factor scribe Louise Simonson is given the same carte blanche to re-create the destiny of the team as she begins exactly where she left off more than 15 years ago. Panosian’s stuff looks really good, and Simonson likely isn’t trying to recapture lost glory, so this has some promise and is worth trying.

X-MEN: LEGACY #234

Written by Mike Carey. Illustrated by Diogenes Neves. Cover by Clay Mann.

Mike Carey has been doing an excellent job with this book, using it to fill in the overlooked corners of the X-world, but I wanted to mention this issue solely for possibly having one of the best looking pieces of cover art work I’ve seen in quite some time. Stunning, sexy, intriguing, and evocative all wrapped up in one. Kudos to Clay Mann.

X-MEN: SECOND COMING #1 (one-shot)

Written by Christopher Yost & Craig Kyle. Illustrated by David Finch. Cover by Adi Granov. Variant cover by David Finch.

After nearly four years of stories the tale of the mutant messiah is finally going to come to fruition, beginning with this one-shot and continuing across all of the x-books for the next three months. Hope returns to the X-men and with her comes eradication and death. Man, imagine what would happen if the X-men found peace of love. As Marvel puts it “Many will be wounded. Several will die” which either means this book will rock, or some random mutants you’ve long since forgotten, like Maggot, Lifeguard or Squirrel Girl, will be in for a world of hurt.

Also look for these two tie-in issues as the perfect place to get started:

Cable #24

X-Men: Hope #1

X-FORCE #255

Written by Christopher Yost & Craig Kyle. Illustrated by Clayton Crain. Cover by Clayton Crain.

Everything that’s happened in this title over the past two years comes to a head in the final part of the epic “Necrosha” storyline. Who will live and who will die? Find out here!

CAPTAIN AMERICA: REBORN PREMIERE HC

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Bryan Hitch & Butch Guice.

One of the key pieces of Marvel’s new Heroic Age is the return of Steve Rogers. Well, if you want to see exactly how he returns, here’s the book for you.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER ULTIMATE COLLECTION TPB

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Steve Epting, Mike Perkins, and Michael Lark.

Before the death of Captain America, the return of Bucky as the Winter Soldier was the biggest storyline of Ed Brubaker’s opus. In case you missed it, here’s your chance to get the whole storyline in one neat little (or not so little) package.

IRON MAN: THE ART OF IRON MAN TP

Written by John Rhett Thomas.

IRON MAN: ART OF IRON MAN 2 HC

Written by John Barber.

If the mind blowingly detailed and uber complete “Art of” book from the first movie (which has long been out of print as a hard cover, and is now available again as a soft cover - yay!) is any indication then the second “Art of” book will further blow my mind, so that the little pieces from the first mind blowing are further blown into even smaller bits and I may never recover from all the amazing concept art, script, and phenomenally detailed looks at how they brought the films to life. Total brain death for me may involve an erection, or maybe just a chubby.

NOMAD: GIRL WITHOUT A WORLD TP

Written by Sean McKeever (with Ed Brubaker). Illustrated by David Baldeon (with Rafael Albuquerque). Cover by Rafael Albuquerque.

Featuring Sean McKeever’s triumphant return to the Marvel Universe, this series collects the tale of the female Bucky from the HEROES REBORN universe, and her introduction to the 616 universe. McKeever does well with stories featuring teenagers, and Brubaker lent a small amount of guidance to ensure the story fits nicely with what he has planned for Cap in his own book, so this should be a good read for Cap fans. Also, it’s possibly the only cool thing to come out of that whole “Onslaught” mess from a few years back.

SPIN ANGELS PREMIERE HC

Written by Jean-Luc Sala. Illustrated by Pierre-Mony Chan.

And the Soleil hits keep coming. Billed as “John Woo meets John Paul II”, this book seems like an ultra cool conspiracy action tale centered around mysterious goings-on in the Vatican. Sounds good to me.

ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN: THE WORLD ACCORDING TO PETER PARKER PREMIERE HC

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by David LaFuente.

There was a lot of uncertainty regarding Spider-man at the end of Ultimatum. Thankfully, Bendis and LaFuente prove that all the worry was for naught by bringing us this new series that doesn’t skip a beat. This first hardcover collects the first 6 issues of Peter Parker’s new adventures, and is a must for anyone who has ever enjoyed Spidey.

The fourth in a series of sexy Bishoujo style statues, fan favourite X-Man PSYLOCKE joins the previously released ROGUE, BLACK WIDOW, and SCARLET WITCH.

MARVEL SELECT CYCLOPS ACTION FIGURE

Quite possibly the ugliest Cyclops action figure ever made, it looks like his botox is melting and the only thing holding his face up is his silly ruby quartz visor.

METROID PRIME 2 ECHOES: SAMUS “ZERO SUIT” STATUE

While Samus may look great in her armour, it can be argued that she looks even better out of it. And here’s a statue that proves it, too, as we’re given a 9 inch statue that depicts Samus in her blue skin-tight suit and armed with her blaster.

OBAMA 8-INCH PLUSH

Um, ... yeah. At this point, no comment.

What could be cooler than a black tee showing the Japanese poster of the film that started it all?

THUNDERCATS: CHEETARA STATUE

USAGI YOJIMBO PLUSH

Everyone’s favourite rabbit ronin is now rendered as a loveable plush, ready to accompany any young adventurer on their next quest.

WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE – JOSH RANDALL 12-INCH ACTION FIGURE

There are certain things I never expect to see in my life as an action figure, and I’m either floored at how awesome it is or how fucking ridiculous it is. Being a huge fan of the show that launched Steve McQueen’s career, this is one of those times where awesome is the only word that springs to mind. The gentlemen cowboy badass is now yours to take home, sawed off Winchester and all.
