AMAZE INK / SLAVE LABOR GRAPHICS

PINOCCHIO VAMPIRE SLAYER GN

Written by Van Jensen. Illustrated by Dustin Higgins.

It’s one of those twisted mash-up ideas we all wish we’d thought of: Pinocchio battling vampires to avenge his father Geppetto. Well, that sharp, elongating wooden nose had to be good for something, right? Here’s hoping he starts with those twinkly guys in TWILIGHT. The curiosity factor alone makes sure I’ll check it out.

ARCHAIA

OKKO VOL. 2 HC: THE CYCLE OF THE EARTH

Written & illustrated by Hub.

The second volume of this excellent series is finally released, and Archaia is also re-offering the first volume (CYCLE OF THE WATER) to coincide with this newest volume. Worth discovering.

BOOM! STUDIOS

Written by Mark Waid. Illustrated by Minck Oosterveer.

This book is the sequel to one of the more surprising titles of the past year. Purporting to be the world’s greatest detective, and having solved every mystery known to man (sorry, Batman), Catherine Allingham has only a six months to live. Plenty of time for hair-raising crime solving!

THE UNKNOWN HC

Written by Mark Waid. Illustrated by Minck Oosterveer.

Mark Waid continues to put his creative stamp on BOOM with this great new series. What if the world’s smartest person decided to become a private investigator and solve all of the mysteries that have remained unknown for so long? With the second series beginning this month, this is the perfect time to discover The Unknown.

DEVIL’S DUE PUBLISHING

With Rob Zombie’s Halloween sequel on the horizon, now is the perfect time to catch up on what deranged slasher Michael Myers has been doing in the comic world. This volume collects both of the DDP limited series: NIGHTDANCE, 30 YEARS OF TERROR, and THE FIRST DEATH OF LAURIE STRODE.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

ATHENA #1

Written by Doug Murray. Illustrated by Paul Renaud & Fabiano Neves. Covers by Paul Renaud, Fabiano Neves, Dennis Calero, and Patrick Berkenkotter.

The goddess of Athena is reborn into our world in this blatant Wonder Woman rip-off. The gorgeous art by Renaud & Neves might not be enough to make this one worth while. Also, this issue features the meeting between the newly returned goddess and the entire Obama family (do they really think that still works for a sales boost?).

GALACTICA 1980 #1

Written by Marc Guggenheim. Illustrated by Cezar Razek. Cover by Lucio Parrillo.

Another sad attempt to legitimize something tragic and re-imagine it as being “hard-core” and “mature”. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA spoiler alert: God did it.

DEAD IRONS HC

Written by James Kuhoric. Illustrated by Jason Shawn Alexander. Cover by Jae Lee.

Finding a good western can be a tough deal sometimes, but when it’s a supernatural western following a group of undead bounty hunters, with the unique and haunting artwork of Jason Shawn Alexander, then you don’t really need to think too hard. The incredibly atmospheric images in this book are worth the price of admission alone. If you like westerns or the macabre, do not miss this one.

EXTERMINATING ANGELS PRESS

FANTAGRAPHICS

STRANGE SUSPENSE: THE STEVE DITKO ARCHIVES VOL. 1 HC

Written & illustrated by Steve Ditko. Edited by Blake Bell.

Every story Steve Ditko ever drew before starting work on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. I always loved Steve Ditko's creepy little Spider-Man.

GRAPHIX

THE GOOD NEIGHBORS BOOK 1 TP: KIN

Written by Holly Black. Illustrated by Ted Naifeh.

Written by the author of the acclaimed SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, The Good Neighbors is a welcome addition to the urban fantasy genre, one that has been sorely underrepresented in the comic medium outside of Vertigo. A well illustrated adventure, this is the story of a displaced fairy living in our world who just found out about her heritage, and must now save the world.

I.D.W. PUBLISHING

FALLEN ANGEL: REBORN #3

Hey, did ya hear? Fallen Angel’s back and she’s up against Illyria, formerly known as Fred from the ANGEL series.

GHOSTBUSTERS: DISPLACED AGGRESSION #1

Written by Scott Lobdell. Illustrated by Ilias Kyriazis.

Oh those wacky Ghostbusters, always getting into trouble. This time, the team is defeated by Gozer’s daddy and split up, each member thrown across time. Peter Venkman finds himself trapped in the 1886, and his only chance of getting back is to team up with an unexpected, and apparently really beautiful, new ally. Hey, he’s a scientist man. Back off!

TRANSFORMERS: ALL HAIL MEGATRON #15

Written by Nick Roche and Denton J. Tipton. Illustrated by Nick Roche and Casey Coller.

All Hail Megatron was originally designed to be a twelve issue maxi-series. Well, IDW decided that there was too much story to be contained in twelve issues and added some more. This issue focuses on Kup and Perceptor, the scientist-turned-deadly sniper.

TRANSFORMERS: TALES OF THE FALLEN #2

Written by Simon Furman. Illustrated by Carlos Magno.

Did you like the movie? Did you think Sideswipe was absolutely wicked? Then pick up this comic written by legendary T-Formers writer Simon Furman, which puts the focus squarely on the Autobot warrior.

G.I. JOE: ORIGINS VOL. 1 TP

Written by Larry Hama. Illustrated by Mike Hawthorne and Tom Feister.

Larry Hama returns to G.I JOE! In this first volume Hama focuses on how Duke, Scarlett, Hawk, Stalker, and Snake Eyes came to join the team. If you’re a JOE fan, you can’t miss it. Hama is at his best here, weaving a truly great tale showing us why these characters are just so damn cool.

HAMMER OF THE GODS VOL. 1 TP: MORTAL ENEMY

Written by Michael Oeming and Mark Wheatley.  Illustrated by Michael Oeming.

This is a kick-ass book brought back to life by IDW publishing. Before Oeming came to attention with Bendis on POWERS, he was showing fans what he can really do with stories of myth and legend. This collection also includes illustrations by Frank Cho, Adam Hughes, and Dave Johnson.

TORPEDO VOL.1 TP

Written by Enrique Sanchez Auli. Translation by Jimmy Palmiotti. Illustrated by Jordi Bernet & Alex Toth.

One thing that immediately roped me onto this book was Jordi Bernet. His artwork is phenomenal and reminds me of Kubert in his prime, and once you add Alex Toth to the mix it’s like a dream. This story is about a gangster, as we go through his life and explore every step that brought him to the top. I do enjoys me a good character piece.

THE TRANSFORMERS: ALL HAIL MEGATRON VOL. 2 TP

Written by Shane McCarthy. Illustrated by Guido Guidi, Emiliano Santalucia, and Robert Deas.

The pretty-to-look-at-but-not-so-smart movie not your cuppa? Would you like some story to go with your giant robots? Well, look no further than this epic series. In case you missed it, “All Hail Megatron” tells the story that you just about never see: What if Megatron conquered the Earth, held the Matrix of Leadership, and left the Autobots for dead on Cybertron? Collecting issues 7-12 of the series, this is not to be missed.

THE WAITING PLACE TP

Written by Sean McKeever. Illustrated by Mike Norton, Brendon & Brian Fraim, and David Yurkovich.

Sean McKeever and Mike Norton have been making waves in the industry since they burst out onto the scene with this teen drama series filled with spinning wheels and racing hearts. Ever since I read SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE, Sean McKeever has had a special place for me. He writes phenomenal characters and tells stories filled with a quirky melodrama that keeps you glued to the page. I’ll admit I wasn’t the biggest fan of his TEEN TITANS but going back to early McKeever is always a welcome thing.

POCKET BOOKS

SIMON & SHUSTER

CAMILLA D'ERRICO'S BURN GN

Written & illustrated by Camilla D'Errico.

It's a good month for local artist Camilla D'Errico as her graphic novel finally gets published through Simon & Shuster, having started at local publisher Arcana Studios. Again, super nice person, local talent, so spend your money here.

TOP SHELF PRODUCTIONS

ALEC: THE YEARS HAVE PANTS TP / HC

Written & illustrated by Eddie Campbell.

Campbell is best known for his collaboration with Alan Moore on FROM HELL, but he is more than simply an artist, as proven by this collection of his ongoing mostly autobiographical series. This has earned praise from the likes of Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and Warren Ellis.

UDON

Pretty much does what it says on the cover. It contains over 1500 illustrations, including art from Street Fighter 4.

DARK HORSE COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

BEASTS OF BURDEN #1 (of 4)

Written by Evan Dorkin. Illustrated by Jill Thompson.

These cats and dogs must protect the small community they live in from supernatural harm. Kind of like a reverse SCOOBY-DOO. Maybe they have a retarded human for a pet. Created by the fantastic team of Evan Dorkin (MILK & CHEESE) and Jill Thompson (SANDMAN, LITTLE ENDLESS).

THE AMAZON HC

Written by Steven T. Seagle. Illustrated by Tim Sale.

This mystery story is about a reporter who goes to the Amazon and realizes what industrialization is doing to the land. When he is drugged and left to fend for himself in the Amazon he is confronted by the spirit of the jungle itself. A classic tale of action and wonder that is well worth reading, but it is most notable for being one of superstar artist Tim Sale’s early works.

B.P.R.D.: THE BLACK GODDESS TP

Written by Mike Mignola & John Arcudi. Illustrated by Guy Davis.

This volume continues the “Scorched Earth Trilogy”, and wow, what a great series it is! These characters have just been so much fun to follow, and now the stakes are higher than they have ever been. Where Mignola and Arcudi are taking this is what keeps me glued to every page, because I just don’t know. In a series about the supernatural, this is truly magic.

USAGI YOJIMBO: YOKAI HC

Written & illustrated by Stan Sakai.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the rabbit ronin Dark Horse is releasing the first-ever Usagi Yojimbo original graphic novel, fully painted by Sakai himself. If you’ve ever wanted to read these stories, but never knew how to start, now is the perfect chance for any newcomer!

BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM #4

Written by Paul Dini / co-feature written by Marc Andreyko. Illustrated by Dustin Nguyen / co-feature illustrated by Jeremy Haun. Cover by Dustin Nguyen.

This excellent new Bat-book continues with its street level perspective of the changes happening in Gotham City due to the return of the Black Mask, while the Manhunter co-feature ties nicely into the overall tapestry of the book.

BATGIRL #2

Written by Bryan Q. Miller. Illustrated by Lee Garbett & Trevor Scott. Cover by Phil Noto.

The new Batgirl faces off against some of Gotham’s other costumed heroes as she finds out that not everybody is happy that there’s a new girl under the cape and cowl.

BLACKEST NIGHT #3 (of 8)

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ivan Reis & Oclair Albert.

One of the creepier looking Black Lanterns, ex-Firestorm Ronnie Raymond, takes center stage on a cover that shows the current Firestorm in for some serious hurt. The solicitation says that the scattered remnants of the Justice League suffer a terrible loss: could this be the end of the man fondly known as “JasonStorm”? Also, you just knew that The Spectre couldn’t stay out of this fracas, didn’t you?

BLACKEST NIGHT: BATMAN #2 (of 3)

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Adrian Syaf & John Dell.

Red Robin reunites with his father. But considering his father died from a boomerang to the chest in IDENTITY CRISIS, let’s say it probably wasn’t a good Father’s Day for either of them.

BLACKEST NIGHT: SUPERMAN #2 (of 3)

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Eddy Barrows & Ruy Jose.

Psycho Pirate died a nasty, gruesome, and violent death in INFINITE CRISIS. Now he’s back, and he’s taking out his frustrations on Superman’s hometown of Smallville. Oh, and this Black Lantern has a partner: Black Lantern Lois Lane! (No ... the other one)

BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #2 (of 3)

Written by J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Ed Benes & Rob Hunter.

Think the necrophilia on the cover of issue one was disturbing? Check this one out as Donna Troy’s dead baby comes back for one more late night feeding.

BOOSTER GOLD #24

Written by Dan Jurgens / co-feature written by Matthew Sturges. Illustrated by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund / co-feature illustrated by Mike Norton.

For a while now, the Black Beetle has been a thorn in Booster’s side, but nobody knew just who he was. All that changes with this issue as Booster and Black Beetle face of for the fate of the Justice League. Plus, the co-feature sees the current Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes face off against ... the Black Beetle. Dude gets around, doesn’t he?

BRAVE AND THE BOLD #27

Written by J. Michael Straczynski. Illustrated by Jesus Saiz.

Good ol’ JMS finally arrives in the pages of Brave and the Bold as he teams Batman with the underrated Dial H for Hero. Robby Reed, wielder of the H-Dial (which grants the owner a variety of superpowers) visits Gotham City and promptly has the Dial stolen. Whoops.

GREEN LANTERN #46

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy.

It’s a big free-for-all as Sinestro throws down with Mogul for control of the Sinestro Corps (it’s not the “Mongul” Corps, you know) and Hall Jordan can’t help but stick his ring into it. And while all this is happening, the dead Sinestro Corps members rise.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #40

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman.

The Corps have established that they treat their dead with utmost respect, even commonly referring to them as their “honoured dead” while entombing them in crystal. But when these honoured dead come back as Black Lanterns, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, and Jon Stewart must resort to brutal and savage combat just to stay alive.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA 80-PAGE GIANT #1

Written by Chuck Kim, Josh Williamson, Rich Fogel, and others. Illustrated by Mahmud Asrar, Adrian Syaf, and others.

It’s time traveling goodness for the Justice League as a battle between Epoch and the Time Commander scatters our heroes throughout different time periods. And it looks like tons of fun. Remember Samurai from the Superfriends? Well, Superman and Dr. Light find themselves fighting alongside him. Also, Green Lantern and Red Arrow arrive in the old west to face off against Cinnamon; Green Arrow and Firestorm arrive in WWII to fight the Bride of Frankenstein; John Stewart and Vixen go medieval with the Shining Knight; and Black Canary and Zatanna team up with the original Crimson Avenger to evade gun-totting gangsters.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE #3 (of 7)

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Mauro Cascioli.

Are you excited that James Robinson and Mark Bagley are the new creative team for the main JLA series? Then you really should be reading this limited series that apparently leads right into Robinson’s run. In this issue, Shazam and Supergirl join the team to take down uber-bad guy Prometheus.

MAGOG #1

Written by Keith Giffen. Illustrated by Howard Porter & John Dell.

Thankfully the DC marketing department isn’t using the tried and true slogan “because you demanded it!” on this new book, because it’s doubtful it ever dawned on even the most hardcore fan to ask for a Magog series. However, the creative team on this looks very promising, so this book is worth checking out and might end up being a nice surprise.

RED ROBIN #4

Written by Christopher Yost. Illustrated by Ramon Bachs. Cover by Francis Manapul.

Everything has led to this! Red Robin returns to Gotham and faces the new Batman. Oh my stars and garters. (Wait - wrong company and comic) Anyway, this title has been fantastic so far, and Yost is doing an excellent job, although I’m not sure I’m used to Tim Drake in this ridiculous costume.

RED TORNADO #1 (of 6)

Written by Kevin VanHook. Illustrated by Jose Luisi & J.P.Mayer.

I bet VanHook found writing this to be a breeze! hahaha. Sorry that was bad. You might even say it blew. Oops, there I go again spewing a lot of hot air. Alright, I’ll stop before this spins out of control. Give me a sec, just need to catch my second wind. Okay, enough. This limited series promises to explore the history and reveal the true origin of DC’s coolest android, long-time JLA member Red Tornado, and introduce the rest of his previously unknown battery operated family. Let’s hope they do the character some justice. That was the last one. Honest.

SUPERMAN #692

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Renato Guedes & Jose Wilson Magalhaes.

Dealing with the death of one of their own as a result of “Codename: Patriot”, the Metropolis Science Police face off against a group of thieving super villains.

ACTION COMICS #881

Written by Greg Rucka / co-feature written by James Robinson & Greg Rucka. Illustrated by Julian Lopez / co-feature illustrated by Cafu.

The fallout from the Superman family’s latest crossover “Codename: Patriot” begins as child hood friends Supergirl and Flamebird find themselves in a good old fashioned girl-fight, with Nightwing caught in between. This story continues in Supergirl #45. Plus, the co-feature starring Captain Atom continues!

SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN #1 (of 6)

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Gary Frank & Jon Sibal. Covers by Gary Frank.

The acclaimed team from ACTION COMICS brings us the “definitive origin” of a young Clark Kent growing up and away from the fields of Kansas to the bustling streets of Metropolis. One thing Geoff Johns does well is delving deep into the characters of established iconic heroes and shining new light on their origins (just see GREEN LANTERN for proof), and making those origins relevant in contemporary times again. Now if only the writers of SMALLVILLE would read this series and get some new ideas to refresh a long stagnant show.

SUPERMAN: WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON #7 (of 12)

Written by James Robinson & Greg Rucka. Illustrated by Pete Woods. Cover by Gray Frank.

Reluctant soldier Kal-El (That’s “Mr. Superman” to you) is promoted just in time to face panicking in the streets of Kandor and an alien invasion.

ADVENTURE COMICS #2

Written by Geoff Johns / co-feature written by Geoff Johns & Michael Shoemaker. Illustrated by Francis Manapul / co-feature illustrated by Clayton Henry.

This issue features two reunions that fans have been waiting for, as Superboy returns to see if his relationship with Wonder Girl is as dead as he was, and Lex Luthor teams with the evil Brainiac to form possibly the deadliest partnership in the DCU. And Francis Manapul’s art just keeps getting better and better. Plus, the Legion co-feature sees Lightning Lad face off against his brother Lightning Lord.

SUPERGIRL #45

Written by Sterling Gates. Illustrated by Jamal Igle & Jon Sibal. Cover by Joshua Middleton.

“The Hunt for Reactron” part 2 continues from ACTION COMICS #881 as Supergirl and Flamebird continue to work out their differences. But can they do so in time to find Reactron, the man who killed her father?

SUPERGIRL ANNUAL #1

Written by Sterling Gates.  Illustrated by Fernando Dagnino & Raul Fernandez.

Way back in Supergirl #34, Kara Zor-El took on the secret identity of Linda Lang, Lana’s niece. But with the New Krypton crossover and all the hoopla that came with it, we really haven’t had a chance to see her inhabit that role. Now, with this annual, we can, as DC presents us with the story “Linda Lang: Day One”. Also, this issue promises to show us what drove Lucy Lane to take up the role of Superwoman.

TEEN TITANS #75

Written by Felicia D. Henderson / co-feature written by Sean McKeever. Illustrated by Joe Bennet & Jack Jadson / co-feature illustrated by Yildiray Cinar & Julio Ferreira.

Could this be the turning point for DC’s beleaguered teen franchise? FRINGE executive producer Felicia D. Henderson takes over as the new regular writer, promising to add some much needed creative stability.

WARLORD #6

Written by Mike Grell. Illustrated by Chad Hardin & Walden Wong. Cover by Mike Grell.

The first arc of this re-launched book comes to a conclusion, and thus far has been everything fans could hope for. Worth picking up by anyone who enjoys a well-crafted epic.

WEDNESDAY COMICS #9 - #12 (of 12)

Written & illustrated by an amazing collection of talent.

This truly brilliant and so very enjoyable title comes to an end this month, with the final four issues of this ground-breaking run.

BATMAN: BATTLE FOR THE COWL HC

Written by Tony Daniel and Fabian Nicieza. Illustrated by Tony Daniel and others.

The tale that reset the stage for the new status-quo in the family of Bat-books is now collected into a nice hardcover for you to read. It includes the three issue series by Tony Daniel, as well as the nice book-end GOTHAM GAZETTE one-shots.

BLACKHAWK: BLOOD AND IRON TP

Written & Illustrated by Howard Chaykin.

I know there are a lot of Blackhawk fans out there and you know who you are. Well after too long of seeing no love from DC, finally you have been heard and some material is finally being released. This classic series from the late 80’s shows just how good Chaykin can be when he isn’t doing stories about capes. If you’ve ever had even a passing interest in the Blackhawks checks this out, you might like it.

GREEN LANTERN: AGENT ORANGE HC

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Philip Tan, Jonathan Glapion, Ivan Reis, and Oclair Albert.

Orange Lantern Larfleeze steals the show here and makes for some awesome interactions with Hal Jordan. Also, dark secrets from the Guardians are revealed and things really begin to ramp up for BLACKEST NIGHT. This title is a consistently great book, and this collection will get you psyched for Blackest Night if you are trade waiting.

GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH TP (new edition)

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver & Prentis Rollins.

With Blackest Night finally upon us, take a moment to go back and read the series that re-launched Green Lantern, and watch as the seeds are sown for Blackest Night. A must for any Lantern fan or anyone who enjoys cosmic stories done right.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS: EMERALD ECLIPSE HC

Written by Peter Tomasi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman.

This was a bad ass story arc, revealing what happens when Daxam is dragged into the War of Light by Mongul and his Sinestro Corps. It has everything a great story needs: action, tragedy and high stakes. Emerald Eclipse really did take what’s going on to the next level, and I am so excited to see where BLACKEST NIGHT takes the title, because if Tomasi is half the writer I think he is, it can only get better. And let me just say again with Gleason on Corps and Mahnke on the main title, the art doesn’t get much better than that.

TRINITY VOL. 3 TP

Written by Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza. Illustrated by Mark Bagley, Scott McDaniel, Mike Norton, and others.

If you loved the weekly series when it came out, then this book makes for a nice addition to your bookshelf if you want to re-read the series in one (or rather three) go. If you didn’t like it or passed on it, trust me, Trinity was a better series than a lot of critics give it credit for, and one that definitely reads better in trade form than it did in weekly single issues. Give it a shot.

WONDER WOMAN: RISE OF THE OLYMPIAN TP / HC

Written by Gail Simone. Illustrated by Aaron Lopresti, Bernard Chang, and Matt Ryan.

Yes, that’s right: this collection is being released in both hard cover AND soft cover at the same time. It may be a risk for DC, but it’s totally the right move because the more chance they have to get this amazing story in readers’ hands, the better. Somewhat overlooked amidst all the goings on over at the Batman and Superman corners of the DCU, this Gail Simone scripted action epic is just the kind of return to form that Wonder Woman needed.

VERTIGO

FABLES #88

Written by Bill Willingham. Illustrated by Mark Buckingham & Steve Leialoha.

Bufkin and Baba Yaga battle it out in “Witches“, part 2 of 5! And if that’s not enough, Beauty and the Beast make a startling discovery that could affect the entire fate of Fabletown.

HELLBLAZER #259

Written by Peter Milligan. Illustrated by Simon Bisley.

Do you like Simon Bisley’s art? Well, Vertigo fans will love the fact that he is illustrating the next two issues of Hellblazer in addition to being the regular series cover artist. In this issue, John Constantine hides in the cottage of Chas’ wife ... the woman who possibly hates him more than any other person alive (which is really saying something).

MADAME XANADU #15

Written by Matt Wagner. Illustrated by Michael Wm. Kaluta.

Kaluta’s return to art duties on this title has been simply stunning, so it’s a little saddening to see his stint end with this issue. Nevertheless, a team up between Madame Xanadu and Wesley Dodds, the golden age Sandman, is not a bad way to go.

SWEET TOOTH #1

Written & illustrated by Jeff Lemire.

Jeff Lemire’s (ESSEX COUNTY TRILOGY) new series is about a strange boy born with animal features trying to survive in a desolate post-pandemic world. It looks wonderfully bizarre, and at only $1 for the first issue there is no excuse for not giving this one a try.

LUNA PARK HC

Written by Kevin Baker. Illustrated by Danijel Zezelj.

I haven’t read Kevin Baker’s novels and don’t know much about him, but his first graphic novel - Luna Park - looks fantastic! The tale is set in the crime riddled near-ghost town of Coney Island, and features spectacular illustrations by Danijel Zezelj (LOVELESS). Definitely worth picking up!

SCALPED VOL. 5 TP: HIGH LONESOME

Written by Jason Aaron. Illustrated by R.M. Guera, Davide Furno & Francesco Francavilla.

The fifth volume of one of the best series in the last decade will be gracing shelves in a couple of months. Answers are revealed, and we will finally find out exactly what happened on the night the agents were murdered. Just how far will Dashiell Badhorse fall? I guess we gotta check it out to find out.

WILDSTORM

EX MACHINA #45

Written by Brian K. Vaughan. Illustrated by Tony Harris.

This issue kicks off the final story-line of the much lauded series. It’s been a good run, and I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up between now and issue #50.

GEN 13: WORLD'S END TP

Written by Scott Beatty. Illustrated by Mike Huddleston & Dan Hipp.

What's the first thing five superpowered teenagers do after the end of the world? Find the last remaining skate park in America.

STORMWATCH PHD: WORLD'S END TP

Written by Ian Edginton. Illustrated by Leandro Fernandez & Francisco Paronzini.

The world has been destroyed, and the survivors of humanity are on the run from post-human cannibals, North Korea, and monsters unleashed from the depths of Hell. Luckily, StormWatch managed to complete a new SkyWatch orbital platform before Armageddon hit. The classic Warren Ellis era roster is back: Weatherman Jackson King, Synergy, Fuji, Hellstrike, Fahrenheit, Flint, and Deathblow.

ZUDA

HIGH MOON VOL. 1 TP

Written by David Gallaher. Illustrated by Steve Ellis.

From online to the printed page! A civil war era western with werewolves. That should be enough to tickle anyone’s naughty bits, or maybe just mine. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this series, and from what little I’ve read, it’s pretty quality stuff. Books like this scream fever dream.

FALLOUT TOYWORKS #1 (of 5)

Created by Pete Wentz & Darren Romanelli. Written by Brett Lewis. Illustrated by Sam Basri & Imaginary Friends Studios.

Inspired by the ideas and lyrics of Fallout Boy. Yeah, I’m still scratching my head on that too. This new sci-fi series follows the adventures of a brilliant young toymaker and his new creation, the android named Tiffany, as they go about trying to discover the meaning of life. Looking like an odd mish-mash of A.I., Pygmalion, and Pinocchio, this could go either way. Although with Basri on art chores, it will at least look pretty.

PROOF #24

Written by Alex Grecian. Illustrated by Riley Rossmo.

After the recently concluded arc, it is time for a “done-in-one” story focusing on the dating life of the title character. An excellent place to discover how good this quirky series is.

SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA #1 (of 5)

Written by Josh Wagner. Illustrated by Camilla D'Errico.

Based on the Nintendo DS video game of the same name, Sky Pirates promises tales of high adventure in a world of forgotten technology and natural magic. Plus, it’s noteworthy because it features the lush art of Vancouver gal Camilla D'Errico, who graced Elfsar with her presence at Free Comic Book Day. Support a local talent.

UNDERGROUND #1 (of 4)

Written by Jeff Parker. Illustrated by Steve Lieber.

In the vein of Whiteout, this is a crime story with cavers. A park ranger named Wesley Fischer is on a one-woman mission to prevent Stillwater Cave from being turned into a tourist trap, and winds up getting in a fight with the locals who have started blasting in the cave. Who'd have thought a woman named Wesley would grow up to be confrontational? I just imagine it being something like THE DESCENT (only without little goblin creatures), but with that really tense tight atmosphere, where you feel like suffocating. With some very nice art, this really does have potential to be quite the exhausting crime thriller and I mean that in the best possible way.

WITCHBLADE #130

Written by Ron Marz. Illustrated by Stjepan Sejic. Covers by Stjepan Sejic and Adriana Melo.

The final chapter of the “War of the Witchblades” promises to reveal who will wield the mystical battle-thong of destiny!

CRIMINAL: THE SINNERS #1

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Sean Phillips.

My favourite comic is back baby! Being biased is awesome, but then again so is Criminal. The Sinners puts Tracy Lawless back on the radar, and will see what he’s been up to working for the bad guys since we last saw him in the arc, aptly titled “Lawless.” If you love crime comics, then this is a no-brainer. If you’ve been reading the series, then this is a no-brainer. If you don’t want me to find you and punch you in the face, then this is a no-brainer. The great thing about these comics is the extra content that doesn’t get reprinted into trades! Just one more reason to make this amazing book a no-brainer.   In other words ADD THIS TO YOUR PULL LIST!

DARK AVENGERS #9

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Mike Deodato.

Nick Fury looks to kick some God of War ass while Marvel Boy runs for his life!

DARK REIGN: THE LIST - AVENGERS #1 (of 1)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Marko Djurdjevic.

DARK REIGN: THE LIST - DAREDEVIL #1 (of 1)

Written by Andy Diggle. Illustrated by Billy Tan.

DARK REIGN: THE LIST - X-MEN #1 (of 1)

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Alan Davis.

Norman Osborn has drawn up a list of things he’d like to see changed in the world, which cannot be good for anyone, especially not the people on the list. Similarly Joe Quesada has a list, only this list is great news for everyone as it’s a list of all the creative talent he wants to unleash on Marvel’s top characters, and he’s using these one shots to do it. There will be several more of these inter-connected one-shots over the next two months as well, giving us 8 in total.

DARK X-MEN: THE CONFESSION #1 (of 1)

Written by Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost. Illustrated by everyone’s favourite artist - TBA.

Grant Morrison did a bang-up job in firmly establishing Emma Frost’s heroic credentials, and Joss Whedon further turned her into a compelling, if morally ambiguous, heroine. Here’s hoping that this whole Dark Reign thing doesn’t fuck that up. This book sheds light on what the hell Emma’s up to with The Cabal.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #17

Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning. Illustrated by Wes Craig. Cover by Pasqual Ferry.

This book has been solid gold since it launched out of the ANNIHILATION event a few years ago, and this issue provides the perfect place for new readers to jump on and discover how fun this space-epic is month after month.

HULK #15

Written by Jeph Loeb. Illustrated by Ian Churchill. Variant cover by Ed McGuinness.

Red Hulk fights ... blah, blah, blah ... yawn.

INCREDIBLE HULK #602

Written by Greg Pak. Illustrated by Ariel Olivetti.

Another one of those reheated ideas, as Hulk comes to blows with the Unstoppable Juggernaut, and this time he’s making it a family affair with Skaar tagging along. Juggernaut might be in for a whole lot more than a simple stopping this time.

SON OF HULK #15

Written by Paul Jenkins. Illustrated by Andres Guinaldo Isabel. Cover by Alex Garner.

Countless worlds have failed to stop Galactus, sending wave after wave of starfleets to their doom in an effort to bring the devourer to his knees. No power, no weapon has ever stopped the hungry helmeted one, but will he soon find he’s bitten off more then he can chew when he gobbled up planet Sakaar? Can the Son of Hulk’s rather stupid plan of punching the devourer of worlds really, really hard actually succeed? I doubt it but it; sure will be fun to watch.

IMMORTAL WEAPONS #3 (of 5)

Written by Rick Spears / Back-up written by Duane Swierczynski. Illustrated by Timothy Green II / back-up illustrated by Travel Foreman. Cover by David Aja.

This month the spotlight shines on the history of Dog Brother #1 and how he became the dreaded Immortal Weapon that we now know. Also, the back-up story featuring Iron Fist continues, setting the stage for what’s to come for the Immortal Iron Fist.

VENGEANCE OF MOON KNIGHT #1

Written by Gregg Hurwitz. Illustrated by Jerome Opena. 50/50 covers by Alex Ross and Lenil Francis Yu. Variant cover by Tim Sale.

After a brief reprieve, Moon Knight is back, and supposedly he’s finally gotten rid of his split-personality and all the problems that came with it, simplifying this needlessly overly complicated character and allowing the new creative team to focus on the heart of a potentially great character. Crime novelist Gregg Hurwitz has recently proven he can write very good comics with the PUNISHER MAX title, and the phenomenal Jerome Opena should bring an excellent energy to the artwork on this book. So now Moon Knight is free to wage his war on crime, starting with the main man himself: Norman Osborn!

NEW AVENGERS #57

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Stuart Immonen.

The New Avengers are caught in the middle of a supervillain turf war as the Hood is dethroned. Can the team survive, let alone stop the chaos? On a side note, how F’ed is Marvel if Bendis bangs his head and falls into a coma? I mean he has basically planned the next decade of every major Marvel book.

NOMAD: GIRL WITHOUT A WORLD #1 (of 4)

Written by Sean McKeever. Illustrated by David Baldeon. Cover by Rafael Albuquerque.

The young female Bucky from the HEROES REBORN world has mysteriously found her way into the main Marvel Universe, and this four issue series spotlights her attempts to fit into her new world. Written by the evidently-no-longer-exclusive-to-DC Sean McKeever, no stranger to writing excellent stories featuring teenage protagonists. Although it will be a challenge even for him to take a Rob Liefield brainchild and somehow make it not lame.

PUNISHER ANNUAL #1

Written by Rick Remender. Illustrated by Jason Pearson.

It’s the Punisher versus Spider-Man in this year’s Annual, featuring the frenetic artwork of the always fantastic Jason Pearson.

RUNAWAYS #14

Written by Kathryn Immonen.  Illustrated by Sara Pichelli

The unbelievable conclusion to “Homeschooling” is here! RUNAWAYS has always been a rollercoaster ride of joy, and for those of you who feared that Kathryn didn’t have it in her, the remarkable recent upswing of this book should calm your fears. We saw a death of a beloved character in the first issue of her run, and now the return of another! It’s all about girl power … and a Hispanic robot.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #606

Written by Joe Kelly. Illustrated by Mike McKone. Cover by J. Scott Campbell.

Hot on the heels of Mary-Jane Watson’s return in the past few issues, this issue sees the return of the Black Cat, guaranteeing that Spider-Man’s life will only get more complicated.

SPIDERMAN: THE CLONE SAGA #1 (of 6)

Written by Howard Mackie & Tom DeFalco. Illustrated by Todd Nauck. Cover by Pasqual Ferry.

A very smart man named Albert Einstein said doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result is folly, but he clearly never saw Marvel, who’s try and try again attitude produced the Ultimate Universe. With this revisiting of one of the most despised story arcs ever Marvel is gambling they can do it again. The question you have to ask yourself is if this will be another Ultimate success or a withering “clone”

SPIDER-WOMAN #1

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Alex Maleev. 50/50 covers by Alex Maleev and Alex Ross.

Yes, this was originally going to come out this spring, but the delays are over and this book by the fantastic team of Bendis & Maleev (known best for their work re-invigorating DAREDEVIL) will finally see the light of day. See what happens when Jessica Drew attempts to pick up her life after spending lord knows how long in the clutches of the Skrulls.

STRANGE TALES #1 (of 3)

Written & illustrated by Peter Bagge, Nick Bertozzi, Molly Crabapple, Nicholas Gurewich, James Kochalka, Michael Kupperman, Jason, John Leavitt, Junko Mizuno, Paul Pope, Johnny Ryan, and Dash Shaw.

Take some of the best indie creators working in comics and let them play in the Marvel sandbox with absolutely no rules and this three-issue series is what you get. A must-read for anyone who enjoys the non-mainstream creative sensibilities and doesn’t worry about continuity.

THUNDERBOLTS #136

Written by Rick Remender. Illustrated by Mahmud Asrar.

Rick Remender takes over this wonderfully deranged title for this double sized issue featuring Power Man and Iron Fist. The former heroes for hire and the new and insane thunderbolts!!! Fuck yeah! With Remender on board I’m a happy camper, and I can’t wait to see what in the sweet blazing F*&% would convince them to cut a deal with the devil. Don’t miss it.

THE TORCH #1 (of 8)

Written by Mike Carey and Alex Ross. Illustrated by Patrick Berkenkotter.

One of the first superheroes ever, the artificial life form named Torch is now dead and buried with full honours. But evil scientist the Mad Thinker is keen to discover what death means to a machine.

ULTIMATE COMICS ARMOUR WARS #1 (of 4)

Written by Warren Ellis. Illustrated by Steve Kurth. Cover by Brandon Peterson.

Warren Ellis wrote one of the absolute best Iron Man arcs ever with Extremis which kicked off ol’ Tinhead’s run back to the top. Set in the Ultimate universe this re-imagining of a classic Marvel tale will secure Iron man’s place atop the pile just in time for the next great Marvel Studio’s picture. Part sci-fi adventure, part corporate espionage this will probably be one of the best post Ultimatum books.

WAR OF KINGS: WHO WILL RULE? #1

Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning. Illustrated by Paul Pelletier.

Can they kill off Vulcan already? Now that I got that out of the way, Marvel cosmic is the best it’s been in years, possibly ever, and that’s all thanks to the writers, lovingly referred to as DnA. Having had total control (writing pretty much every book for the event) War of Kings has been a great ride and here they will map out what’s to in store for the future in the marvel cosmic side of things. If you’ve been reading the series or simply want to know what to look forward to, then this is going to be a must read.

WAR MACHINE #10

Written by Greg Pak. Illustrated by Allan Jefferson. Cover by Francesco Mattina.

Rhodey and Iron Patriot fight to the death and Vegas isn’t setting a good line for War Machine. It’s Metal Mayhem that will make Transformers 2 look like a bake sale.

UNCANNY X-MEN #515

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Greg “porn-face” Land.

After the Dark Avengers / X-Men crossover “Utopia”, one of the original team members leaves the team. I think the cover does a pretty good job of telling us just who that is. Find out how and why!

CRIMINAL: THE DELUXE EDITION HC

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Sean Phillips.

The ultimate way to catch up on your Criminal! This oversized hardcover collects volumes 1-3 of the trade paperbacks, and will also reprint the extra material, previously only available in the single issues, plus the never before printed 5 page “movie trailer in comics form” that was used to announce the series way back when. If you’ve never read Criminal before, now is the time!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 TP: WAR OF KINGS BOOK 1

Written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning. Illustrated by Paul Pelletier, Brad Walker, Carlos Magno & Wes Craig.

This title makes you feel like you’re smack dab in the middle of one of them sprawling space operas. The characters are what make this book magical and instead of praising it, I will simply lay down the new Guardians roster. The brew slurping Bug; the time lost Major Victory, Gamora, the green skinned assassin with mental issues, and an angry walking tree named Groot – all led by Rocket Raccoon, a talking mammal with his ray gun on a hair trigger. If that doesn’t get you, then nothing will.

SOLEIL: YTHAQ – NO ESCAPE PREMIERE HC

Written by Christophe Arleston. Illustrated by Adrien Floch.

Soleil’s deal with Marvel has yielded some spectacular stories, and Ythaq is no exception. This is the tale of how the marooned crew of a damaged spacecraft try to survive on a strange medieval world filled with fantastic, and dangerous, beings.

ALIENS: HERO PULSE RIFLE PROP REPLICA

When I saw this in Previews my jaw hit the floor and all that was racing through my mind was the thought “IT’S GAME OVER MAN!” I’ve wanted one of these since I was a kid and want one on my wall right away. Being that they are limited to 1,000 pieces you better order yours or you’ll just have to be jealous of mine. hehehe.

THE BUFFY AND ANGEL FIGURINE COLLECTION MAGAZINE

First came the Marvel Classic Figurine collection, followed earlier this year by the DC Superheroes collection, and now all of your favourite characters from the Buffy-verse will be carefully crafted into detailed figurines!

BUCKY AS CAPTAIN AMERICA STATUE (BOWEN DESIGNS)

Regardless of who you think of as Captain America, this statue of the new Cap (otherwise known for decades as Bucky, and more recently as the Winter Soldier) looks fantastic!

DC COMICS: BATMAN – DEAD WHITE AUDIO CD

Some time ago, acclaimed thriller author John Shirley wrote a Batman book about how the Dark Knight faced off against the criminal mastermind White Eyes. It was terrific. Now, Graphic Audio brings us the audio adaptation, perfect for long car trips and boring gym sessions, or just because you want “a movie in your mind!” (Their words, not mine)

DEATH: BLACK LANTERN T-SHIRT

Show your allegiance to the Black Lanterns with this stylish black shirt!

JLA CLASSIFIED: CLASSIC SERIES 2 ACTION FIGURES

Relive some 90’s goodness as DC Direct brings us Blue Superman, Harpoon-Hand Aquaman, Classic Kyle Rayner, and Silent but Deadly Batgirl.

THE KARATE KID: COBRA KAI REPLICA COSTUME

Now you too can sweep the leg in this ultra-cool officially licensed Gi covered in embroidered patches.

MODERN NOVA STATUE (BOWEN DESIGNS)

It’s nice when they make a bad ass statue of a less popular character. I can honestly say I’ve been waiting for this one. This amazingly sculpted (by the Kucharek Brothers) statue features Nova in his current costume. I like the dead Annihilus on the base, nice touch.

STAR WARS FORCE FX LIGHTSABERS

Two new lightsabers are being offered this month. We have Count Dooku and Obi Wan Kenobi’s saber from Episode 1.

STAR WARS TRASH COMPACTOR BOOKENDS

This classic moment from the very fist STAR WARS film will look fabulous on any fan’s bookshelf.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES BATSU ACTION FIGURES

Leo, Don, Mike, and Ralph appear in the latest series in the new BATSU collection of stylized figures. They are 5 inches tall, fully painted, and equipped with their signature weapons. One question though: what’s a BATSU?!?

TERMINATOR 2: T-800 BATTLE DAMAGED 12-INCH ACTION FIGURE

After the huge disappointment that was TERMINATOR SALVATION and the even more tragic action figures that came with it, it’s nice to see when they go back to the classic. Aside from taking it back to T2 this well sculpted 12 inch figure complete with a light up cybernetic right eye should more than make up from the bad taste this years’ Terminator film left in your mouth.
