BATMAN
AND ROBIN #4
Written
by Grant Morrison. Illustrated by Philip Tan & Jonathan Glapion. Cover
by Frank Quitely.
There’s
a new Red Hood in town and he’s dragging along a creepy sidekick on a
mission to replace Batman and Robin as Gotham City’s protectors.
BATMAN:
STREETS OF GOTHAM #4
Written
by Paul Dini / co-feature written by Marc Andreyko. Illustrated by
Dustin Nguyen / co-feature illustrated by Jeremy Haun. Cover by Dustin
Nguyen.
This
excellent new Bat-book continues with its street level perspective of
the changes happening in Gotham City due to the return of the Black
Mask, while the Manhunter co-feature ties nicely into the overall
tapestry of the book.
BATGIRL
#2
Written
by Bryan Q. Miller. Illustrated by Lee Garbett & Trevor Scott. Cover by
Phil Noto.
The new
Batgirl faces off against some of Gotham’s other costumed heroes as she
finds out that not everybody is happy that there’s a new girl under the
cape and cowl.
BLACKEST NIGHT #3 (of 8)
Written
by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ivan Reis & Oclair Albert.
One of
the creepier looking Black Lanterns, ex-Firestorm Ronnie Raymond, takes
center stage on a cover that shows the current Firestorm in for some
serious hurt. The solicitation says that the scattered remnants of the
Justice League suffer a terrible loss: could this be the end of the man
fondly known as “JasonStorm”? Also, you just knew that The Spectre
couldn’t stay out of this fracas, didn’t you?
BLACKEST NIGHT: BATMAN #2 (of 3)
Written
by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Adrian Syaf & John Dell.
Red
Robin reunites with his father. But considering his father died from a
boomerang to the chest in IDENTITY CRISIS, let’s say it probably wasn’t
a good Father’s Day for either of them.
BLACKEST NIGHT: SUPERMAN #2 (of 3)
Written
by James Robinson. Illustrated by Eddy Barrows & Ruy Jose.
Psycho
Pirate died a nasty, gruesome, and violent death in INFINITE CRISIS. Now
he’s back, and he’s taking out his frustrations on Superman’s hometown
of Smallville. Oh, and this Black Lantern has a partner: Black Lantern
Lois Lane! (No ... the other one)
BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #2 (of 3)
Written
by J.T. Krul. Illustrated by Ed Benes & Rob Hunter.
Think
the necrophilia on the cover of issue one was disturbing? Check this one
out as Donna Troy’s dead baby comes back for one more late night
feeding.
BOOSTER
GOLD #24
Written
by Dan Jurgens / co-feature written by Matthew Sturges. Illustrated by
Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund / co-feature illustrated by Mike Norton.
For a
while now, the Black Beetle has been a thorn in Booster’s side, but
nobody knew just who he was. All that changes with this issue as Booster
and Black Beetle face of for the fate of the Justice League. Plus, the
co-feature sees the current Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes face off against ...
the Black Beetle. Dude gets around, doesn’t he?
BRAVE
AND THE BOLD #27
Written
by J. Michael Straczynski. Illustrated by Jesus Saiz.
Good ol’
JMS finally arrives in the pages of Brave and the Bold as he teams
Batman with the underrated Dial H for Hero. Robby Reed, wielder of the
H-Dial (which grants the owner a variety of superpowers) visits Gotham
City and promptly has the Dial stolen. Whoops.
GREEN
LANTERN #46
Written
by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy.
It’s a
big free-for-all as Sinestro throws down with Mogul for control of the
Sinestro Corps (it’s not the “Mongul” Corps, you know) and Hall Jordan
can’t help but stick his ring into it. And while all this is happening,
the dead Sinestro Corps members rise.
GREEN
LANTERN CORPS #40
Written
by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman.
The
Corps have established that they treat their dead with utmost respect,
even commonly referring to them as their “honoured dead” while entombing
them in crystal. But when these honoured dead come back as Black
Lanterns, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, and Jon Stewart must resort to
brutal and savage combat just to stay alive.
JUSTICE
LEAGUE OF AMERICA 80-PAGE GIANT #1
Written
by Chuck Kim, Josh Williamson, Rich Fogel, and others. Illustrated by
Mahmud Asrar, Adrian Syaf, and others.
It’s
time traveling goodness for the Justice League as a battle between Epoch
and the Time Commander scatters our heroes throughout different time
periods. And it looks like tons of fun. Remember Samurai from the
Superfriends? Well, Superman and Dr. Light find themselves fighting
alongside him. Also, Green Lantern and Red Arrow arrive in the old west
to face off against Cinnamon; Green Arrow and Firestorm arrive in WWII
to fight the Bride of Frankenstein; John Stewart and Vixen go medieval
with the Shining Knight; and Black Canary and Zatanna team up with the
original Crimson Avenger to evade gun-totting gangsters.
JUSTICE
LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE #3 (of 7)
Written
by James Robinson. Illustrated by Mauro Cascioli.
Are you
excited that James Robinson and Mark Bagley are the new creative team
for the main JLA series? Then you really should be reading this limited
series that apparently leads right into Robinson’s run. In this issue,
Shazam and Supergirl join the team to take down uber-bad guy Prometheus.
MAGOG
#1
Written
by Keith Giffen. Illustrated by Howard Porter & John Dell.
Thankfully the DC marketing department isn’t using the tried and true
slogan “because you demanded it!” on this new book, because it’s
doubtful it ever dawned on even the most hardcore fan to ask for a Magog
series. However, the creative team on this looks very promising, so this
book is worth checking out and might end up being a nice surprise.
RED
ROBIN #4
Written
by Christopher Yost. Illustrated by Ramon Bachs. Cover by Francis
Manapul.
Everything has led to this! Red Robin returns to Gotham and faces the
new Batman. Oh my stars and garters. (Wait - wrong company and comic)
Anyway, this title has been fantastic so far, and Yost is doing an
excellent job, although I’m not sure I’m used to Tim Drake in this
ridiculous costume.
RED
TORNADO #1 (of 6)
Written
by Kevin VanHook. Illustrated by Jose Luisi & J.P.Mayer.
I bet
VanHook found writing this to be a breeze! hahaha. Sorry that was bad.
You might even say it blew. Oops, there I go again spewing a lot of hot
air. Alright, I’ll stop before this spins out of control. Give me a sec,
just need to catch my second wind. Okay, enough. This limited series
promises to explore the history and reveal the true origin of DC’s
coolest android, long-time JLA member Red Tornado, and introduce the
rest of his previously unknown battery operated family. Let’s hope they
do the character some justice. That was the last one. Honest.
SUPERMAN #692
Written
by James Robinson. Illustrated by Renato Guedes & Jose Wilson Magalhaes.
Dealing
with the death of one of their own as a result of “Codename: Patriot”,
the Metropolis Science Police face off against a group of thieving super
villains.
ACTION
COMICS #881
Written
by Greg Rucka / co-feature written by James Robinson & Greg Rucka.
Illustrated by Julian Lopez / co-feature illustrated by Cafu.
The
fallout from the Superman family’s latest crossover “Codename: Patriot”
begins as child hood friends Supergirl and Flamebird find themselves in
a good old fashioned girl-fight, with Nightwing caught in between. This
story continues in Supergirl #45. Plus, the co-feature starring Captain
Atom continues!
SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN #1 (of 6)
Written
by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Gary Frank & Jon Sibal. Covers by Gary
Frank.
The
acclaimed team from ACTION COMICS brings us the “definitive origin” of a
young Clark Kent growing up and away from the fields of Kansas to the
bustling streets of Metropolis. One thing Geoff Johns does well is
delving deep into the characters of established iconic heroes and
shining new light on their origins (just see GREEN LANTERN for proof),
and making those origins relevant in contemporary times again. Now if
only the writers of SMALLVILLE would read this series and get some new
ideas to refresh a long stagnant show.
SUPERMAN: WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON #7 (of 12)
Written
by James Robinson & Greg Rucka. Illustrated by Pete Woods. Cover by Gray
Frank.
Reluctant soldier Kal-El (That’s “Mr. Superman” to you) is promoted just
in time to face panicking in the streets of Kandor and an alien
invasion.
ADVENTURE COMICS #2
Written
by Geoff Johns / co-feature written by Geoff Johns & Michael Shoemaker.
Illustrated by Francis Manapul / co-feature illustrated by Clayton
Henry.
This
issue features two reunions that fans have been waiting for, as Superboy
returns to see if his relationship with Wonder Girl is as dead as he
was, and Lex Luthor teams with the evil Brainiac to form possibly the
deadliest partnership in the DCU. And Francis Manapul’s art just keeps
getting better and better. Plus, the Legion co-feature sees Lightning
Lad face off against his brother Lightning Lord.
SUPERGIRL #45
Written
by Sterling Gates. Illustrated by Jamal Igle & Jon Sibal. Cover by
Joshua Middleton.
“The
Hunt for Reactron” part 2 continues from ACTION COMICS #881 as Supergirl
and Flamebird continue to work out their differences. But can they do so
in time to find Reactron, the man who killed her father?
SUPERGIRL ANNUAL #1
Written
by Sterling Gates. Illustrated by Fernando Dagnino & Raul Fernandez.
Way
back in Supergirl #34, Kara Zor-El took on the secret identity of Linda
Lang, Lana’s niece. But with the New Krypton crossover and all the
hoopla that came with it, we really haven’t had a chance to see her
inhabit that role. Now, with this annual, we can, as DC presents us with
the story “Linda Lang: Day One”. Also, this issue promises to show us
what drove Lucy Lane to take up the role of Superwoman.
TEEN
TITANS #75
Written
by Felicia D. Henderson / co-feature written by Sean McKeever.
Illustrated by Joe Bennet & Jack Jadson / co-feature illustrated by
Yildiray Cinar & Julio Ferreira.
Could
this be the turning point for DC’s beleaguered teen franchise? FRINGE
executive producer Felicia D. Henderson takes over as the new regular
writer, promising to add some much needed creative stability.
WARLORD
#6
Written
by Mike Grell. Illustrated by Chad Hardin & Walden Wong. Cover by Mike
Grell.
The
first arc of this re-launched book comes to a conclusion, and thus far
has been everything fans could hope for. Worth picking up by anyone who
enjoys a well-crafted epic.
WEDNESDAY COMICS #9 - #12 (of 12)
Written
& illustrated by an amazing collection of talent.
This
truly brilliant and so very enjoyable title comes to an end this month,
with the final four issues of this ground-breaking run.
BATMAN:
BATTLE FOR THE COWL HC
Written
by Tony Daniel and Fabian Nicieza. Illustrated by Tony Daniel and
others.
The
tale that reset the stage for the new status-quo in the family of
Bat-books is now collected into a nice hardcover for you to read. It
includes the three issue series by Tony Daniel, as well as the nice
book-end GOTHAM GAZETTE one-shots.
BLACKHAWK: BLOOD AND IRON TP
Written
& Illustrated by Howard Chaykin.
I know
there are a lot of Blackhawk fans out there and you know who you are.
Well after too long of seeing no love from DC, finally you have been
heard and some material is finally being released. This classic series
from the late 80’s shows just how good Chaykin can be when he isn’t
doing stories about capes. If you’ve ever had even a passing interest in
the Blackhawks checks this out, you might like it.
GREEN
LANTERN: AGENT ORANGE HC
Written
by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Philip Tan, Jonathan Glapion, Ivan Reis,
and Oclair Albert.
Orange
Lantern Larfleeze steals the show here and makes for some awesome
interactions with Hal Jordan. Also, dark secrets from the Guardians are
revealed and things really begin to ramp up for BLACKEST NIGHT. This
title is a consistently great book, and this collection will get you
psyched for Blackest Night if you are trade waiting.
GREEN
LANTERN: REBIRTH TP (new edition)
Written
by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver & Prentis Rollins.
With
Blackest Night finally upon us, take a moment to go back and read the
series that re-launched Green Lantern, and watch as the seeds are sown
for Blackest Night. A must for any Lantern fan or anyone who enjoys
cosmic stories done right.
GREEN
LANTERN CORPS: EMERALD ECLIPSE HC
Written
by Peter Tomasi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman.
This
was a bad ass story arc, revealing what happens when Daxam is dragged
into the War of Light by Mongul and his Sinestro Corps. It has
everything a great story needs: action, tragedy and high stakes. Emerald
Eclipse really did take what’s going on to the next level, and I am so
excited to see where BLACKEST NIGHT takes the title, because if Tomasi
is half the writer I think he is, it can only get better. And let me
just say again with Gleason on Corps and Mahnke on the main title, the
art doesn’t get much better than that.
TRINITY
VOL. 3 TP
Written
by Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza. Illustrated by Mark Bagley, Scott
McDaniel, Mike Norton, and others.
If you
loved the weekly series when it came out, then this book makes for a
nice addition to your bookshelf if you want to re-read the series in one
(or rather three) go. If you didn’t like it or passed on it, trust me,
Trinity was a better series than a lot of critics give it credit for,
and one that definitely reads better in trade form than it did in weekly
single issues. Give it a shot.
WONDER
WOMAN: RISE OF THE OLYMPIAN TP / HC
Written
by Gail Simone. Illustrated by Aaron Lopresti, Bernard Chang, and Matt
Ryan.
Yes,
that’s right: this collection is being released in both hard cover AND
soft cover at the same time. It may be a risk for DC, but it’s totally
the right move because the more chance they have to get this amazing
story in readers’ hands, the better. Somewhat overlooked amidst all the
goings on over at the Batman and Superman corners of the DCU, this Gail
Simone scripted action epic is just the kind of return to form that
Wonder Woman needed.
VERTIGO
FABLES
#88
Written
by Bill Willingham. Illustrated by Mark Buckingham & Steve Leialoha.
Bufkin
and Baba Yaga battle it out in “Witches“, part 2 of 5! And if that’s not
enough, Beauty and the Beast make a startling discovery that could
affect the entire fate of Fabletown.
HELLBLAZER #259
Written
by Peter Milligan. Illustrated by Simon Bisley.
Do you
like Simon Bisley’s art? Well, Vertigo fans will love the fact that he
is illustrating the next two issues of Hellblazer in addition to being
the regular series cover artist. In this issue, John Constantine hides
in the cottage of Chas’ wife ... the woman who possibly hates him more
than any other person alive (which is really saying something).
MADAME
XANADU #15
Written
by Matt Wagner. Illustrated by Michael Wm. Kaluta.
Kaluta’s return to art duties on this title has been simply stunning, so
it’s a little saddening to see his stint end with this issue.
Nevertheless, a team up between Madame Xanadu and Wesley Dodds, the
golden age Sandman, is not a bad way to go.
SWEET
TOOTH #1
Written
& illustrated by Jeff Lemire.
Jeff
Lemire’s (ESSEX COUNTY TRILOGY) new series is about a strange boy born
with animal features trying to survive in a desolate post-pandemic
world. It looks wonderfully bizarre, and at only $1 for the first issue
there is no excuse for not giving this one a try.
LUNA
PARK HC
Written
by Kevin Baker. Illustrated by Danijel Zezelj.
I
haven’t read Kevin Baker’s novels and don’t know much about him, but his
first graphic novel - Luna Park - looks fantastic! The tale is set in
the crime riddled near-ghost town of Coney Island, and features
spectacular illustrations by Danijel Zezelj (LOVELESS). Definitely worth
picking up!
SCALPED
VOL. 5 TP: HIGH LONESOME
Written
by Jason Aaron. Illustrated by R.M. Guera, Davide Furno & Francesco
Francavilla.
The
fifth volume of one of the best series in the last decade will be
gracing shelves in a couple of months. Answers are revealed, and we will
finally find out exactly what happened on the night the agents were
murdered. Just how far will Dashiell Badhorse fall? I guess we gotta
check it out to find out.
WILDSTORM
EX
MACHINA #45
Written
by Brian K. Vaughan. Illustrated by Tony Harris.
This
issue kicks off the final story-line of the much lauded series. It’s
been a good run, and I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up between now
and issue #50.
GEN 13:
WORLD'S END TP
Written
by Scott Beatty. Illustrated by Mike Huddleston & Dan Hipp.
What's
the first thing five superpowered teenagers do after the end of the
world? Find the last remaining skate park in America.
STORMWATCH PHD: WORLD'S END TP
Written
by Ian Edginton. Illustrated by Leandro Fernandez & Francisco Paronzini.
The
world has been destroyed, and the survivors of humanity are on the run
from post-human cannibals, North Korea, and monsters unleashed from the
depths of Hell. Luckily, StormWatch managed to complete a new SkyWatch
orbital platform before Armageddon hit. The classic Warren Ellis era
roster is back: Weatherman Jackson King, Synergy, Fuji, Hellstrike,
Fahrenheit, Flint, and Deathblow.
ZUDA
HIGH
MOON VOL. 1 TP
Written
by David Gallaher. Illustrated by Steve Ellis.
From
online to the printed page! A civil war era western with werewolves.
That should be enough to tickle anyone’s naughty bits, or maybe just
mine. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this series, and from
what little I’ve read, it’s pretty quality stuff. Books like this scream
fever dream. |
