Written by Andrew Crosby & Michael Alan Nelson. Illustrated by Ayhan Hyrula.

The best Samurai stories are usually about vengeance, and Swordsmith Assassin definitely lives up to expectations! Beautifully painted, and featuring the high quality that Boom’s collections are quickly becoming known for, this book is a must read.

DABEL BROTHERS PUBLISHING

DEAN KOONTZ’ FEAR NOTHING VOL. 1 TP

Written by Dean Koontz, Adapted by Derek Ruiz and Grant Alter. Illustrated by Robert Gill.

Literary adaptations are in full swing in the comics landscape, and Dean Koontz’ novel Fear Nothing is the latest to throw its metaphorical hat in the ring. Although Koontz is not strictly a horror novelist (although he is best known as one), he is a legitimate master of suspense whose stories are vivid enough to translate well into a visual medium such as this. Fear Nothing is the story of a man named Christopher Snow who is born with a condition that leaves him overly sensitive to light, which means that he is forced to live his life at night. It also means that, on one very special night, he witnesses a murder that only he can solve. Koontz specializes in stories like this, and this is as entertaining as anything he has ever put out.

DEL RAY

THE ESSENTIAL WONDER WOMAN ENCYCLOPEDIA HC – PX COVER EDITION

A lot of people don’t actually know the origins of the Amazonian princess, and just kind of ride on the fact that she is a great and strong female character. Or just know about what they have seen on TV and youtube.  Well if you want to learn more about the character and find out all the little details you may not have known about or just love the character this encyclopedia will be a very in rich and in depth source of information.

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

ROBOCOP #1

Written by Rob Williams. Illustrated by Fabiano Neves. Covers by Stephen Segovia and Johnny D.

Robocop is one of those movies that can be watched over and over again, and it helped redefine the limits of what an action story could be. You can’t help but love Robocop! While I don't think anything will look as awesome as the Frank Miller & Juan Jose Ryp Robocop comic that Avatar put out a few years back, this new ongoing series from Dynamite is a huge excitement for fans! Picking up immediately after the first film, this book is sure to be filled with extreme violence and satire. Plus it gets even better as ED-209 appears in this issue as well! Want to see what else ED-209 has been up to? I thought you might, so here you go: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/video-game-screwattack/58497

WEEKLEY WORLD NEWS #1.

*try something new!*

Written by Chris Ryall. Illustrated by Alan Robinson.

All of your favourites from the classic tabloid make the transition to comic book form in this new series. Guaranteed to be unlike any other comic book being published right now!

FALLEN ANGEL REBORN TP

Written by Peter David. Illustrated by JK Woodward.

Fallen Angel versus ANGEL’s Illyria as written by Peter David ... what’s not to like? Over its various incarnations, Fallen Angel has been an excellent series, and this volume is no different in that regard, and hopefully the ANGEL fans will discover this great book.

THE VEIL TP

Written by El Torres. Illustrated by Gabriel Hernandez.

Urban fantasy comics with a subtle slant towards the supernatural are always welcome, and this one, about a private detective who can see through the veil hanging between this world and the beyond, looks to continue this trend. IDW has a very good track record with the genre, as LOCKE & KEY, THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW, and SILENT HILL all demonstrate, so pick this up if you enjoy those kinds of books.

ONI PRESS

LOCAL DELUXE HC (new printing)

Written by Brian Wood. Illustrated by Ryan Kelly.

If Brian Wood wrote a cookbook it would probably be compelling and might make me teary eyed. The man knows how to write character pieces and this is an exceptional work. If you missed it the first time around, make sure you do not make that mistake twice. This is the story Megan McKeenan, depicting her life in vignettes a year apart over 12 years. It is like reading a great indie movie. A moving and very human story perfectly illustrated by Ryan Kelly. Quieter, but equally as good as Wood’s more well know Vertigo titles, DMZ and NORTHLANDERS, and worth you giving a try.

RESURRECTION VOL. 1: DELUXE EDITION

*try something new!*

Written by Marc Guggenheim. Illustrated by Justin Greenwood, Dave Dumeer, and others.

After ten years of being pillaged by aliens, humanity is left alone to rebuild. Can a nurse, a soldier, and former President Bill Clinton bring a new age of peace to Earth? This tale is an original spin on the classic sci-fi alien invasion tale, and should be appealing to fans of both WALKING DEAD and Y THE LAST MAN. Chock full of betrayal, fear, anger, racism, and hate, it has all the nasty bits of humanity that people look for in an edgy post-apocalyptic story. But it also has an honest to goodness sense of wonder, social commentary, and a surprising amount of hope to balance it out, like any good sci-fi epic should. This massive book collects the first 14 issues, half of which are in black and white and the other half in colour.

WASTELAND APOCALYPTIC EDITION, VOL. 1 HC

Written by Antony Johnston. Illustrated by Chris Mitten.

And in the same genre footsteps as RESURRECTION, being offered again this month is this excellent, gloomy, post-apocalyptic sci-fi tale. If you like shit like WALKING DEAD, check it out.

RADICAL PUBLISHING

LEGENDS THE ENCHANTED #0

*try something new!*

Written & illustrated by Nick Percival.

Taking a page out of FABLES and turning it on its side, Radical’s latest offering shows us fairy tale stories as we’ve never seen them before. But being a Radical book, this has a strong genre slant promising horror, steampunk, and grotesque visions, as evidenced by the fact that the promotional art features Red Riding Hood seeming to be riding a big ass motorcycle with the head of the Big Bad Wolf mounted on the front. And this introductory issue #0 is only $1 USD, sot here’s no excuse not to give it a try!

UDON

MEGA MAN MEGAMIX VOL. 1 TP

Written & illustrated by Hitsohi Ariga.

MASS EFFECT: REDEMPTION #1 (of 4)

Written by Mac Walters and John Jackson Miller. Illustrated by Omar Francia. Cover by Daryl Mandryk.

Not only is this an exclusive tie-in to the upcoming Mass Effects 2 video game, this miniseries looks to be an excellent space opera in a medium that just cannot have enough space operas.

SOLOMON KANE: DEATH'S BLACK RIDERS #1 (of 4).

*try something new!*

Written by Scott Allie. Illustrated by Mario Guevara. Cover by Darick Robertson.

The newest series featuring the most kick-ass Puritan you’re ever read about. Based on stories by the pulp genius Robert E. Howard, this book is different than anything else out there right now, and is worth picking up to experience something different and new.

ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND: THE POP WONDERLAND SERIES HC

Written by Lewis Carroll. Adapted by Michiyo Hayano. Illustrated by POP.

One of the best known stories in the world, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland is given a fresh new take, lushly illustrated in an anime & manga style by renowned artist POP.

BLACKSAD HC

*try something new!*

Written by Juan Díaz Canales. Illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido.

This exceptional noir tale is finally available in North America in English, and will be a treat for anyone who reads it. This story might feature anthropomorphic characters, but do not confuse it with anything resembling “funny talking animals”. This gritty street level tale is noir at its best, and is strongly recommended.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT VOL. 6 TP: RETREAT

Written by Jane Espenson and Joss Whedon. Illustrated by Georges Jeanty & Andy Owens. Cover by Jo Chen.

The most recent volume of Season Eight focuses on Buffy, her friends, and the slayer legion as they attempt to avoid further beatings at the hands of Twilight by retreating to the Himalayas. But not everyone is happy with the plan. Plus, at long last, an appearance by fan-favourite character Oz.

HELLBOY VOL. 9 TP: THE WILD HUNT

Written by Mike Mignola. Illustrated by Duncan Fegredo.

Mike Mignola’s fan-favourite creation must finally face his dark and mysterious roots if he is to have any chance of defeating his most recent evil threat. This volume follows up on the threads from the previous series and sets up some big shake ups in the Hellboy universe, and is a must for any fan of the big red guy. This volume also includes a sketchbook section featuring art by both Mignola and Fegredo.

MESMO DELIVERY TP

Written by Rafael Grampa. Illustrated by Rafael Grampa & Marcus Penna.

Finally! Back in print after the shortest print run ever (an exaggeration, but only slightly) this is a book not to miss the second time around. A very simple but awesome story about some ass kicking truck drivers, with some stellar art by Rafael Grampa depicting one of the finest visual scenes of decapitation I’ve ever encountered. Reading this bad boy is like being in a brawl, by the end you’re all adrenaline. Here’s hoping for much more work from this guy.

SHINJUKU HC

Written by Mink. Illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano.

If the prospect of Yoshitaka Amano’s first wholly original project for Dark Horse is not enough to entice you, then how about the fact that this promises to be a kick-ass, bad-ass, hard-boiled horror-noir sorcery epic where the Tokyo Underworld takes on the... well... the Underworld itself.

DC COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

THE ATOM & HAWKMAN #46

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ryan Sook. Cover by Ryan Sook.

This issue is one of the eight BLACKEST NIGHT “dead books” being published this month. The Atom and Hawkman have always had one of the biggest friendships in the DCU and seeing the Hawks go hunting for the Atom is just a devastating twist. When you add Khufu and Chayara to the mix how will Ray Palmer deal with trying to take down his best friends? Having Geoff Johns back on a Hawkman title even for a one shot is nothing short of glorious. This issue promises a major meltdown and another awesome chapter in the BLACKEST NIGHT event.

BATMAN #695

Written by Tony Daniel. Illustrated by Tony Daniel & Sandu Florea. Cover by Tony Daniel.

The new Dynamic Duo, Batman and Penguin, are out to shut down the slaughter being committed by their common foe Black Mask.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #7

Written by Grant Morrison. Illustrated by Cameron Stewart. Cover by Frank Quitely. Variant cover by Cameron Stewart.

The next arc of the new main Bat-book begins here, featuring guest stars Knight & Squire and Batwoman, and promises further details about the death of Bruce Wayne. This arc is illustrated by the talented but extremely under rated Cameron Stewart (SEA GUY, SEVEN SOLDIER OF VICTORY), so check out his stuff on what is certainly his most high profile gig thus far.

BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #40

Written & illustrated by Sam Keith. Cover by Sam Keith.

The incomparable Sam Keith is let loose on Batman, handling the double duties of writing and illustrating on this arc of Confidential, so this four part gem is not to be missed.

BLACKEST NIGHT

There isn’t an issue of BLACKEST NIGHT this month. However, DC has revived eight different “dead titles” (even continuing from where their original numbering left off), to be spin-off one-shots in this gap month.

1)  THE ATOM AND HAWKMAN #46

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Ryan Sook. Cover by Ryan Sook.

2)  CATWOMAN #83

Written by Fabian Nicieza. Illustrated by Julian Lopez & Bit. Cover by Guilliem March.

3)  THE PHANTOM STRANGER #42

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Ardian Syaf & Vicente Cifuentes. Cover by Ardian Syaf & Vicente Cifuentes.

4)  THE POWER OF SHAZAM #48

Written by Eric Wallace. Illustrated by Don Kramer & Michael Babinski. Cover by Tom Feister.

5)  THE QUESTION #37

Written by Greg Rucka. Illustrated by Denys Cowan & Bill Sienkiewicz. Cover by Cully Hamner.

By far one of the cooler battles of the BLACKEST NIGHT event is going to happen in this issue, as the current Question Renee Montoya must face her mentor and the original Question, Vic Sage. Otherwise known as Zombies vs. Lesbians. Written by Greg Rucka, and illustrated by the original Question series artists Cowan & Sienkiewicz, this should be kick-ass.

6)  STARMAN #81

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Fernando Dagnino & Bill Sienkiewicz. Cover by Tony Harris.

Arguably one of the greatest modern series, Starman wrapped up perfectly almost ten years ago, but now sees one final issue as part of DC’s special “dead series revival” month. The Shade must battle a Black Lantern Starman to save his beloved Opal City. But which Starman?

7)  SUICIDE SQUAD #67

Written by John Ostrander & Gail Simone. Illustrated by J. Calafiore. Cover by Daniel LuVisi.

8)  WEIRD WESTERN TALES #71

Written by Dan DiDio. Illustrated by Renato Arlem. Cover by Bill Sienkiewicz.

BLACKEST NIGHT: THE FLASH #2 (of 3)

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Scott Kolins. Cover by Scott Kolins. Variant cover by Francis Manapul.

Captain Cold is on the run from the Black Lantern Rogues. And the Flashes continue to be pulled deeper and deeper into the evil plans of Nekron.

BLACKEST NIGHT: JSA #2 (of 3)

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Eddy Barrows & Ruy Jose. Cover by Eddy Barrows & Ruy Jose. Variant cover by Gene Ha.

Enter: Black Lantern Lois Lane!

BLACKEST NIGHT: WONDER WOMAN #2 (of 3)

Written by Greg Rucka. Illustrated by Nicola Scott. Cover by Greg Horn. Variant cover by Ryan Sook.

Supposedly Wonder Woman’s life changes forever in this issue.

GREEN LANTERN #50

Written by Geoff Johns.  Illustrated by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy. Cover by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy. Variant cover by Jim Lee. Sketch variant cover by Doug Mahnke.

It’s Saint Walker, Hal Jordan and Sinestro vs. Black Lantern Spectre for all the marbles. Is it just me or is the spirit of vengeance proving to be about as effective as a soggy Oreo? I mean shouldn’t gods of wrath actually be, well, wrathful? Oh well, now that he’s the spirit of darkness for those silly Black Lanterns I’m sure he’ll kick some rainbow lantern ass.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #44

Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Illustrated by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman. Cover by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman. Variant cover by Greg Horn.

Red Lantern Guy Gardner’s fury continues as things continue to get even worse!

SECRET SIX #17

Written by John Ostrander & Gail Simone. Illustrated by J. Calafiore. Cover by Daniel LuVisi.

As we keep telling you, this book regularly kicks ass, and this month’s issue spills directly out of the BLACKEST NIGHT “dead book” Suicide Squad #67. So make sure you pick up that issue first, and enjoy this excellent two parter.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #41

start reading here!

Written by James Robinson. Illustrated by Mark Bagley & Rob Hunter. 50/50 covers by Mark Bagley & Rob Hunter.

Fans have been clamouring for big name talent on this title for some time now, and beginning this issue they get their wish. James Robinson has proven he can large casts with the best of them, and Mark Bagley spent his career drawing literally every single character at Marvel for 20+ years, and will now get the chance to do the same at DC. A new team with a refocused purpose begins here, and this is your chance to jump on board and be there from the beginning.

OUTSIDERS #26

Written by Dan DiDio. Illustrated by Philip Tan & Jonathan Glapion. Cover by Philip Tan.

Another, yet lower profile, title beginning a new era this month is the somewhat aimless Outsiders title. Dan DiDio takes over as regular writer (yes, that Dan DiDio), with the talented Philip Tan joining him on art work. This is a great cast of characters who need some focus and creative consistency, which we can only hope will both be delivered starting with this issue.

THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #31

Written by J. Michael Straczynski. Illustrated by Jesus Saiz.

JMS brings back the “done in one” comic and this month gives us one a very interesting mash up, between The Atom and The Joker! What happens when the Atom gets into the head of the Joker? A tale only JMS could weave, if this is half as good as his first 2 issues, this will be gold.

DETECTIVE COMICS #861

Written by Greg Rucka. Illustrated by Jock / co-feature illustrated by Cully Hamner. Cover by J.H. Williams III.

Batman makes a guest appearance in the newest arc of title that launched his career some 800+ issues previous to this. Batman and Batwoman team up to get to the bottom of a series of deadly new attacks in Gotham. Although a huge part of this revamped title’s appeal is the truly spectacular artwork of J.H. Williams, the art chores on this new arc should be in very good hands with Jock handling the duties for a few fill-in issues.

SUPERGIRL #49

Written by Sterling Gates. Illustrated by Matt Camp.

With one issue to go before a milestone 50th issue, it seems that DC decided to shake things up for the Maid of Might by possibly killing off one of her closest mentors. Who is it? Well, that would be a spoiler, wouldn’t it? (Hint: she was once played by Annette O’Toole - and if you get that one without the help of Google, you’re a serious die-hard Superman fan!)

ALL STAR SUPERMAN VOL. 2 TP

Written by Grant Morrison. Illustrated by Frank Quitely.

The second volume of what is probably one of the best Superman stories every told is finally available in soft cover. So if you missed the singles and didn’t pick up the hard covers, do yourself a huge favour and make sure you read this and the previous volume!  It is truly worth every second of your time.

DC UNIVERSE: ORIGINS TP

Written by Mark Waid, Scott Beatty, and Len Wein. Illustrated by Various.

Exactly what it sounds like, this book is a compilation of the origins of over 50 DCU heroes and villains. It is also a great way to acquaint yourself with the ever changing landscape of the DCU.

FINAL CRISIS AFTERMATH: DANCE TP

Written by Joe Casey. Illustrated by ChrisCross, Eduardo Pansica, Rob Stull and others.

They were the unseen heroes of Final Crisis as well as one of the more intriguing elements introduced by Grant Morrison. DC did well in following up with Japan’s premiere super-team by giving them their own mini-series... now conveniently collected in this great trade!

THE NEWSBOY LEGION by JOE SIMON AND JACK KRIBY VOL. 1 HC

Written by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Illustrated by Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, and others.

A great book for Kirby-fans of all ages, this hardcover collects the stories that introduced us to the Guardian (currently starring in the JLA and SUPERMAN) and the extremely clever Newsboy Legion.

SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SECRETS OF SINISTER HOUSE TP

Written by various. Illustrated by various.

From 1971-1974, DC published an exceptional horror / romance series which was originally called “The House of Sinister Love” and was eventually renamed as “The Secrets of Sinister House.” This collection is a great, and affordable, way to catch this classic series.

DC - VERTIGO

HOUSE OF MYSTERY #21

*try something new!*

Written by Matthew Sturges. Illustrated by Luca Rossi & Sergio Aragones. Cover by Esao Andrews.

This issue is the perfect point for new readers to start reading and discover how good this book is month after month. After the recent chaos, the bar reopens to the public, but some people are missing, and some - like the house’s original owner Cain - have recently appeared, making everything complicated and confusing.

JOE THE BARBARIAN #1 (of 8)

*try something new!*

Written by Grant Morrison. Illustrated by Sean Murphy.

This new series looks like the perfect chance for Morrison to let loose, and to question our definitions of what’s real and what’s make believe as only her can. And at only $1 USD for the first issue, that’s another great reason to pick this one up. Joe is a kid with a whole lot of troubles in his life: he gets picked on by bullies, his dad is dead, and he's got diabetes. So is it an insulin-deprived hallucination or a Grant Morrison Adventure when he's taken to a world inhabited by all of his toys? Maybe while he's there, he can ask Grant Morrison if he's ever going to finish WILDCATS with Jim Lee. Just ask him.

THE BRONX KILL HC

Written by Peter Milligan. Illustrated by James Romberger.

One of the better recent developments in the medium has got to be Vertigo’s decision to release a series of original crime hardcover graphic novels. And now, after Ian Rankin and Brian Azzarello have proven the viability of this line, Hellblazer writer Peter Milligan steps up to bat with a tale about a writer forced to face some terrible family truths. If you enjoy crime fiction, this series will give you a new place to call home.

THE LOSERS VOL. 1 & 2 TP

*try something new!*

Written by Andy Diggle. Illustrated by Jock & Shawn Martinbrough.

If you’ve already read this series, you know how kick-ass great it is! And for everyone else, now is your chance to pick this one up and discover its awesomeness before the movie comes out in 2010. The story of a rogue Special Forces unit working against the system, this series delivers in so many fantastic ways! The stunning artwork by Jock brings this charismatic group of misfits to life, and if you’ve been reading Marvel’s DAREDEVIL or THUNDERBOLTS, this is the story that put Diggle on the map. It's awesome. And now the first two volumes of the series (there are five in total) are being collected into one over sized and affordably priced volume.

MADAME XANADU VOL. 2: EXODUS NOIR TP

Written by Matt Wagner. Illustrated by Michael Wm. Kaluta.

After re-introducing Madame Xanadu to modern Vertigo readers with her first story arc, illustrated by the wonderful new talent Amy Reeder Hadley, Matt Wagner teamed with legend Michael William Kaluta for a five issue arc which featured a killer murder mystery that had its roots in the Spanish Inquisition. This series has something for everyone.

DC - WILDSTORM

ASTRO CITY: THE DARK AGE BOOK 4 #1

*try something new!*

Written by Kurt Busiek. Illustrated by Brent Anderson. Cover by Alex Ross.

The final arc of the Dark Age begins here! Everything Busiek has been building to has brought us to this point. I don’t need to say anything to convince those of you who have discovered and are already following this truly incredible series. But for those of you who have never picked up an Astro City book, now is the perfect chance for you to take a chance on this first issue. This world of Superheroes Kurt Busiek has crafted is alive in ways that other mainstream comic worlds are not. Once you read this, you will be kicking yourself for not having discovered Astro City sooner.

THE AUTHORITY #18

Written by Marc Bernardin & Adam Freeman. Illustrated by Al Barrionuevo. Cover by George Perez.

After spending two years in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of UnLondon, they've had enough. The Carrier has been restored, and it's being called back to wherever it is Carriers come from, leaving Earth. Forever. The Authority extends an invitation to any and all WildStorm superheroes for their one chance to get off the doomed planet Earth. A pretty depressing way to kick off this new creative team's arc. This story directly continues in this month’s WILDCATS #19.

DANTE’S INFERNO #2

Written by Christos Gage. Illustrated by Diego Latorre.

Lucifer wants to make Beatrice his queen. Not if Dante has anything to do with it! This issue continues one of the most intriguing adaptations of Dante’s Inferno yet, tying in with the upcoming video game. How the upcoming game will translate I have no idea, but as a comic book this could be freaking phenomenal. With strong talent on this book, taking this trip through hell may end up being a hell of a good time.

SUPERNATURAL: BEGINNING'S END #1 (of 6)

*try something new!*

Written by Andrew Dabb & Daniel Loflin. Illustrated by Diego Olmos. Cover by Diego Olmos. Photo variant cover.

Were you a fan of the cult favourite TV show? If so, you’ll be super excited about the story of the Winchester family continuing. But even if you never saw the show, this series should give you plenty of supernatural excitement.

WILDCATS #19

Written by Adam Beechen. Illustrated by Tim Seeley. Cover by George Perez.

The superheroes still trapped on the shattered planet Earth must put their differences aside to fight against not one, but TWO alien invasions. The new creative team begins here, in a story that continues from this month’s AUTHORITY #18.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT: HORDE #1

Written by Doug Wagner. Illustrated by Pop Mhan.

A new series that focuses on the Horde. Whatever that means. Fans of WOW will likely be very excited.

PLANETARY VOL. 4 HC

Written by Warren Ellis. Illustrated by John Cassaday.

Planetary was perhaps one of the best written series of the last decade or so. And now after far too many heartbreaking delays, Warren Ellis’ magnum opus is done. This book collects the conclusion of this fantastic series. The wait is worth it!

       IMAGE COMICS HIGHLIGHTS

HAUNT #4

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Greg Capullo, Ryan Ottley, & Todd McFarlane. Covers by Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo.

This is a very interesting series that is still finding its footing, but has so many things going on it’s hard not to want the next issue in order to understand more about what is going on. A very unconventional story involving covert ops, super powers, brotherly disputes, ex wives and a very un-Catholic priest. With Kirkman now taking over full writing duty (McFarlane was co-writing), his singular voice should take this already intriguing book and take it to the next level.

ORC STAIN #1

*try something new!*

Written and illustrated by James Stokoe.

So, this is a story about a one-eyed orc that can spot structural weaknesses in anything in existence. Fine, whatever. That’s not really what matters about this book. The important thing that you need to know that it's got the same manic, video-game, seizure-style art SCOTT PILGRIM, SHARKNIFE, and KING CITY all do really well. This looks amazing.

PROOF #28

Written by Alexander Grecian. Illustrated by Chris Grine. Cover by Riley Rossmo & Chris Grine.

It was a sad day when I opened up the newest issue of Previews and discovered this is to be the final issue of this fantastic series. This isn’t really a very good place for you to start if you haven’t been reading before this, but I’ll take the opportunity to tell you how good this series has been and plant the seed in your mind for picking up the trades to discover this soon to be much missed gem of a series.

PILOT SEASON: STEALTH #1

*try something new!*

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Sheldon Mitchell. Cover by Marc Silvestri.

I’m not sure I like the overall concept of this year’s Pilot Season issues all being created by Kirkman & Silvestri quite as much as the previous year’s issues created by a variety of talent, but the premise of this issue seems pretty original and worth reading to me. An aging vigilante superhero has Alzheimer’s, and now his son must attempt to save his father from his enemies and himself. It could be cool if it’s done right.

THE WALKING DEAD #69

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn.

The survivors finally reach Washington DC. We’ve seen the build up, but will the pay-off be worth it? For us, hell yeah. But for the characters, likely not.

THE WEIRD WORLD OF JACK STAFF #1

*try something new!*

Written & Illustrated by. PAUL GRIST

This newly relaunched series provides a great jumping on point for people unfamiliar with Paul Grist’s kooky character. He has crafted a unique world with great characters thriving in the weirdness that surrounds them. Castletown (where this book is set) is home to giant robots, vampire reporters, Victorian escape artists, and Britain’s greatest hero. This is one of those very underrated gems that people seem to overlook. I highly recommend trying out at least the first issue of this new ongoing series. Jack Staff will win your heart just give him a chance.

WITCHBLADE #134

Written by Ron Marz. Illustrated by Stjepan Sejic. Covers by Stjepan Sejic and Michael Ivan.

A new arc begins here, featuring the deadly Aphrodite IV versus the bearer of the Witchblade, Detective Sara Pezzini. This series has really grown and matured and left behind its T&A roots (although it still can’t seem to shake that lingering perception), and now is the perfect time for you to pick it up and give it a try. The issues since the end of the “War of the Witchblades” storyline (#131 onwards) are the perfect place to discover how consistently enjoyable this book has become.

INVINCIBLE: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION VOL. 5 HC

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Ryan Ottley & FCO Plascencia.

These “Ultimate Collection” hard covers are the perfect way for you to read this fantastic series. They’ve got about a dozen issues in each over-sized volume, and are the ideal way to discover how great this comic book is.

SAVAGE DRAGON: BACK IN BLUE TP

Written by Erik Larsen. Illustrated by Erik Larsen.

It really is amazing how Savage Dragon just keeps on going and going and going. This book collects issues 145-150, featuring the Dragon rejoining the Chicago PD after years in the wilderness.

SHADOWHAWK CHRONICLES, VOL.1 TP

Written by Jim Valentino. Illustrated by Jim Valentino.

With IMAGE UNITED about to reign down on the Image family of characters it’s understandable that Image would want to give exposure to all of their characters, including the forgotten and underexposed ones. Shadowhawk was always kind of the forgotten book of the Image launch, but if you're reading about him for the first time in the pages of Image United, then you can check this book out and learn all about him before the likely relaunch after IMAGE UNITED. He is like a Batman / Wolverine type character who likes to break spines. Wholesome.

THE WALKING DEAD BOOK 5 HC

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn.

It’s about damn time! For those of us who decided to collect the walking dead in these wonderful hard cover collections, the year or more wait between volumes is torture. So when a new hard cover of The Walking Dead (a.k.a. “The Greatest Zombie Series Ever”) arrives, it is cause for celebration. This one, collecting issues #49 - #60, is no different. This series is truly amazing.

AVENGERS THE INITIATIVE #32

Written by Christos N. Gage. Illustrated by Rafa Sandoval. Cover by David Yardin.

Many B-listers - both villain and hero - were quick to enlist in Osborn’s Initiative seeking glory, or money, or both. Now, with the Dark Avengers as their allies and the Asgardian gods as their foes, what they’re about to get is a serious ass-whooping. I mean really, does anyone think Cloud 9 stands a chance against Balder?

AVENGERS VS AGENTS OF ATLAS #1 (of 4)

*try something new!*

Written by Jeff Parker. Illustrated by Gabriel Hardman. Cover by Humberto Ramos. Variant cover by Gabriel Hardman.

Jeff Parker’s recently wrapped up AGENTS OF ATLAS was vastly underappreciated, but thankfully the team is still getting some good attention, with their recent series co-starring the X-Men, and now this brand new series featuring the classic Avengers from the good old days of old. This will be an excellent book worth reading by anyone who loves fun super-hero tales.

BLACK WIDOW: DEADLY ORIGIN #3 (of 4)

Written by Paul Cornell. Illustrated by Tom Raney & John Paul Leon. Cover by Adi Granov.

After reading the first issue of this series all I have to say is, “wow, what a great start”. The man who brought us the underappreciated CAPTAIN BRITAIN & MI 13 now gives us a tale of spies, intrigue and origins. What is the Icepick Protocol and who is trying to kill the Black Widow and all those she holds dear? With guest stars galore, and some beautiful art (Tom Raney’s art is looking a lot like Joe Quesada, and I mean that in a good way) this is a classic, edge of your seat thriller set in world of superheroes.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #602

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Luke Ross. Cover by Gerald Parel.

After the conclusion of REBORN, the monthly Cap series returns with a brand new arc and both Steve and Bucky starring in this issue. Also, a new back-up story featuring Nomad (whose own limited series recently wrapped up) begins this issue. If you recently re-discovered Cap in the REBORN event, or if you’ve been sitting on the fence, now is the perfect time to pick this book up. You’ll be safe in the hands of Brubaker, because this series has never been anything less than stellar.

CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #6 (of 6)

Written by Ed Brubaker. Illustrated by Bryan Hitch. Cover by John Cassaday. Wraparound cover by Bryan Hitch. Variant cover by Joe Quesada.

It seems this series wasn’t able to wrap up in the five issues originally planned for it, so this is now the real final issue to the series and will hopefully provide us some kind of resolution about what happens to Steve Rogers and who will be Captain America. Let’s just hope that while Steve Rogers is busy getting reborn he doesn’t toss Bucky Barnes to the curb.

DAFFODIL #1 (of 3)

*try something new!*

Written by Brremaud. Illustrated by Rigano. Covers by Rigano.

Another of Marvel’s great new European import titles, this newest one is all about a world of vampires, both good and bad.

DEADPOOL #19

Written by Daniel Way. Illustrated by Paco Medina. Cover by Jason Pearson.

A new story arc begins with Deadpool teaming up with everyone’s favourite wall crawler. Spider-man and Deadpool make for a great dynamic as they are the two biggest mouths in the Marvel Universe, and this team-up might be the only example of when you won’t need sticks and stones to break some bones. The standard which Daniel Way has set for this series is great and the potential for comedy here is huge. Excitement, adventure, and comedy; this book has all the things you crave in a comic book.

HULK #19

Written by Jeph Loeb. Illustrated by Ed McGuinness. Cover by Ed McGuinness. Variant cover by Marko Djurdjevic.

Red Hulk. Blue Hulk. Who’s gives a flying rats ass at this point? It’s like watching a roided out Elmo lay a smack down on an HGH Oscar on Sesame Street After Hours ... actually, on second thought, that would be pretty enjoyable, and alot more exciting than this crap.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #22

Written by Matt Fraction. Illustrated by Salvador Larroca. 50/50 covers by Salvador Larroca and Patrick Zircher.

This series has been so good since it relaunched with Matt Fraction at the helm, and this issue continues examining the aftermath of the epic “World’s Most Wanted” story that recently wrapped up. This book is well worth reading and definitely recommended.

IRON MAN: I AM IRON MAN #1 (of 2)

Written by Peter David. Illustrated by Sean Chen. Cover by Adi Granov.

What everyone’s been yammering for, the two years late comic adaptation of the movie adaptation of the comic!!! I hope they make a TV special!

MARVEL BOY: THE URANIAN #1 (of 3)

*try something new!*

Written by Jeff Parker. Illustrated by Felix Ruiz. Cover by Marko Djurdjevic.

From the pages of AGENTS OF ATLAS, this series focuses on the early days of the space hero from the ‘50s known as Marvel Boy, and now known as The Uranian.

NEW AVENGERS #61

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Stuart Immonen. Cover by Stuart Immonen.

Steve Rogers returns to lead the Avengers, but can even he deliver them to victory in the face of Osborn’s final assault on the heroes of the Marvel U?

PUNISHER: GET CASTLE #1 (of 1)

Written by Rob Williams. Illustrated by Laurence Campbell. Cover by Tim Bradstreet.

This is for fans of PUNISHER MAX.

SECRET WARRIORS #12

Written by Jonathan Hickman. Illustrated by Stefano Caselli. Cover by Jim Cheung.

This is far and away the best new series Marvel has been putting out, and it has only gotten better and better over its first year. Jonathan Hickman is crafting an intricate and intriguing web between Hydra and Nick Fury and his Secret Warriors where every detail holds so much weight. This issue is all about revelations, and judging by the cover, Fury’s team of specialists take on Starro and Bill Nighy in his PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN garb.

SIEGE #1 (of 4)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Olivier Coipel. Cover by Olivier Coipel. Variant covers by Gabriele Dell’Otto and Joe Quesada. Sketch variant cover by Olivier Coipel.

The big changes in the Marvel Universe begin here. Osborn’s always had a big ego, and now it’s getting him into trouble. After successfully dismantling the Avengers, and rupturing the alliances between heroes, he goes and screws it all up by besieging Asgard. Which results in Marvel’s heroes finally standing side by side again. The fall of Osborn will result in yet another change in the status quo, and we can only hope this is the beginning of the good guys winning again. And on design note, the cover dress for this series and the related issues looks really nice with the Asgard image on the right side.

SIEGE: EMBEDDED #1 (of 4)

Written by Brian Reed.  Illustrated by Chris Samnee. Cover by Adi Granov.

As the siege on Asgard begins the media turns its sights on Osborn, and this time it looks like he won’t be painted in the best of light.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN PRESENTS: JACKPOT #1 (of 3)

*try something new!*

Written by Marc Guggenheim. Illustrated by Adriana Melo. Cover by David Yardin.

The last time we saw Jackpot, she died. Which means this three issue series will likely focus on whoever is now behind the mask. Melo’s artwork is very solid, and Guggenheim knows his way around a good story, so this series should be enjoyable.

SPIDER-MAN MAGAZINE #9

Cover by Paolo Rivera.

I’m a huge Spidey fan, and I don’t even read this magazine, but the Abraham Lincoln cover of the newest issue was just too bizarre and funny not to mention.

SUPER HERO SQUAD #1

*try something new!*

Written by Todd Dezago. Illustrated by Mitch Schauer. Covers by Mitch Schauer.

This new all ages book spinning out of the animated series looks like it could be a lot of fun, and possibly the perfect introduction to comics for the younger fans.

S.W.O.R.D. #3

Written by Kieron Gillen. Illustrated by Steve Sanders. Cover by John Cassaday.

Good Ol’ Lockheed. First he pops up and gives a young teenage girl a true friend she desperately needed, then he palled around with Excalibur kicking inter-dimensional butts (and finding time to breed), and finally he reappeared just in time to save the Astonishing X-Men from a royal ass-beating. Now, the mighty purple dragon must free all the poor little aliens of Earth from being imprisoned by nasty old Henry Gyrich. Three guesses on who takes this fight.

ULTIMATE COMICS ENEMY #1 (of 4)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Illustrated by Rafa Sandoval. Cover by Ed McGuinness.

A new evil threat arises in the Ultimate Universe, and the heroes that remain after the recent events of ULTIMATUM, must band together to uncover the secret and save the world.

WOLVERINE: WENDIGO!

Written by Frank Tieri. Illustrated by Paul Gulacy & Paco Diaz. Cover by Ben Oliver.

It just wouldn't be a normal month without at least one superfluous Wolverine one-shot.

X-FACTOR #201

Written by Peter David. Illustrated by Bing Cansino. Cover by David Yardin.

We’re running out of ways to tell you this is the best mutant book, and possibly one of Marvel’s best books period. Pick it up and enjoy the ride.

X-MEN ORIGINS: CYCLOPS

Written by Stuart Moore. Illustrated by Jesse Delperdang. Cover by Adi Granov.

The X-man who is no longer boring finally gets in on the “Origins” bandwagon in a tale that Marvel promises will show both scenes that are familiar and scenes that aren’t.

NATION X #2

Written by C.B. Cebulski, Becky Cloonan, Tim Fish, and John Barber. Illustrated by Becky Cloonan, Tim Fish, and others. Cover by Dustin Weaver.

This month the new mutant anthology series features No-Girl, Northstar, Gambit, and most significantly the long awaited return of Jubilee.

AVENGERS: WORLD TRUST PREMIERE HC

Written by Geoff Johns. Illustrated by Kieron Dwyer, Rick Remender, and Gary Frank.

DC die-hard Geoff Johns writing the Avengers? People tend to forget that before he became the guiding force of DC, Geoff had a brief stint at Marvel and wrote their premier team book following Busiek’s celebrated run. Johns’ first foray into the Marvel U was not a bad one, and many people actually prefer this run to Busiek’s. Not surprising, really, since it was written by GEOFF JOHNS. Pick this up and see how he did.

MARVEL DIVAS TP

Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Illustrated by Tonci Zonjic. Cover by J. Scott Campbell.

This series got a lot of attention for the cheesecake “good-girl” art covers and the misplaced references to “Sex in the City”, but was actually a really pleasant surprise. A smart story and some clean art work allowed this book to be a quick moving and enjoyable read. Pick up the trade this month and discover the fun for yourself.

SPIDER-MAN: RETURN OF THE BLACK CAT PREMIERE HC

Written by Joe Kelly and Marc Guggenheim. Illustrated by Mike McKone, Marco Chechetto and Luke Ross. Cover by J. Scott Campbell.

Mary Jane’s return is complicated by the return of yet another ex-flame of Peter Parker’s, Felicia Hardy (or “Black Cat” to you) in what is one of the best stories of the Brand New Day era. (Are we still calling it that?)

  TOYS & MISC. HIGHLIGHTS

ARKHAM ASYLUM: INMATE T-SHIRT

This is the geek equivalent of going to Alcatraz and buying an orange Alcatraz inmate shirt. Awesome for the Bat fan and also something that will weed out the geeks in a group if they get what the shirt represents. Simple in its awesomeness.

COVER GIRLS OF THE DC UNIVERSE: ARE AVAILABLE AGAIN!!!!

DUE TO CUSTOMER DEMAND WONDER WOMAN & ZATANNA STATUES ARE AVAILABLE AGAIN, BUT ORDERS WILL BE LIMITED TO INITIAL ORDERS.  Perfect for Christmas as they arrive December 16th!

HARLEY QUINN STATUE

The newest series of the beautiful women of the DCU continues with Adam Hughes’ image of Harley Quinn coming to life in all her glory.

“DEADLEAP” BLACK T-SHIRT

Deadpool is starting to show up everywhere, and soon on the very T-shirt you might be wearing. Another month, another Deadpool tee. This one capturing the gun toting wackiness we have come to love about the character.

DETECTIVE COMICS BOX SET

This box set includes figures of some of Gotham’s most famous characters and a 64 page comic book collecting some of their classic adventures:

The Riddler

Batman

Batgirl

Robin

Bat-Mite

GHOSTBUSTERS: RETRO “ECHO” BROWN T-SHIRT

There is never enough Ghostbusters merchandise out there, and while the classic logo shirts are great it’s nice to see some diversity in terms of a Ghostbusting wardrobe. This shirt showcases the Ecto-1 in all of its glory. It amuses me tremendously however that they got the name wrong in the name for the product.

GHOSTBUSTERS: SLIMER FIGURE (W/ DVD)

This translucent 10 inch resin statue was actually designed by Steve Johnson, the guy who originally created Slimer in the films! If that’s not enough to get you excited, then the accompanying DVD detailing the making of the statue and how the Slimer character was brought to life on screen should be the cherry on top.

G.I. JOE CLASSIC BOBBLEHEADS

Now you can have your favourite classic Jo characters sit on your desk and bobble their heads all day. Cobra Commander, Destro, Duke, and Gung-Ho are available to choose from.

GREEN LANTERN HONOR GUARD PROP RING REPLICA

DC has released a few replicas of the Green Lantern ring over the years, but none as cool looking as this metal reproduction of the Honor Guard ring.

IRON MAN MOVIE: ARC REACTOR PROP REPLICA

The Iron Man movie did what all comic book movies should hope to achieve; it created a vested interest in the character and elevated him in terms of popularity. Now the Iron Man fans out there can have this sweet replica of the arc reactor which Pepper Potts gives to Tony Stark, reading “Proof that Tony Stark does have a heart.” A nice display piece.

JLA TROPHY ROOM: BATMAN (MODERN) UTILITY BELT PROP REPLICA

And the hits just keep on coming for the JLA trophy room. Now, consumers get a chance to own an exclusive replica of Batman’s utility belt, complete with 8 working pouches made of faux leather and a big-ass metal belt buckle. They warn, though, that it’s not really meant to be worn. Just stared and at and drooled over.

MARVEL COMICS KOTOBUKIYA COLLECTION: THOR STATUE

Other than the Iron Man statue, the Kotobukiya series of Marvel statues have been a bit disappointing, but now they bring us this fantastic piece of the God of Thunder ready to strike someone down. This is the very first statue of Thor in his new costume, and it looks fantastic, so if you are a collector this is definitely one to get.

MEGA MAN E-TANK ENERGY DRINKS

Mega-Man is one of the greatest 8 bit contributions to the gaming world, and while that is a little biased on my behalf, it doesn’t make it any less true. The blue bomber has given us some of the hardest games to ever grace the earth and, deservedly so, now gets his own energy drink. When you feel like you’re about to die, grab an E-Tank and replenish your health to be able to get the job done. It’s what Mega Man would do.

MY LITTLE CTHULHU PREVIEWS EXCLUSIVE GLOW-IN-THE-DARK VINYL FIGURE

With My Little Cthulhu becoming a sensation online, teaching kids about nightmare gods from outer space, there comes what is probably the most amazing little Cthulhu to date. This guy glows in the dark!!!! How freaking rad is that! Give me a Cthulhu night light and I’m set.

“SHIMMER SURFER” BLACK T-SHIRT

The Silver Surfer is a beloved character who doesn’t really get the love he deserves. So it’s nice to see him in a kick-ass, straight up tee showcasing the character in his vast starry glory.

SINESTRO CORPS MINI NEON SIGN

And now you can lie awake at night and beware Sinestro’s might by displaying this cool little neon sign in your room. Its yellow light can be seen, whether in blackest day or brightest night.

STAR TREK: STARFLEET LOGO FLASK

This Starfleet logo flask looks pretty nice, and will be the perfect gift for any Trekkie to smuggle booze into the next movie premiere they see.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS LIGHTSABER FLASHLIGHT

Ok, this one is quite simple, a flashlight in the shape of a lightsaber hilt. That is just genius and I am genuinely amazed that it took them this long to come up with this one. Having one of these guys during a power outage or simply to find something lost in a dark spot will make you feel like the force is on your side.

STAR WARS LIGHTSABER CHOPSTICK SETS

This is quite possibly the coolest and most unnecessary thing to come out of Star Wars this year and with a scheduled shipping date for December the perfect Christmas gift for the Star Wars enthusiast. They come in sets of 2, those being Luke Skywalker and Yoda, and Darth Vader and Yoda. Loving my Chinese food and sushi, I want - nay - I need a set of these now!

TRANSFORMERS OPTIMUS PRIME BUST BANK

Everyone’s favourite Autobot leader is perfectly rendered as a bust-bank for you to save your hard earned money to spend on cool stuff at Elfsar.

WINNIE THE POOH & PIGLET BEARBRICK SET

A Winnie the Pooh Bearbrick is frustratingly obvious in its genius, but making Piglet look like a bear freaks me out, because it makes me think of horrible, swine-flu slash fiction set in the Hundred Acre Wood. Like Pooh & Piglet got it on and this little freak was the result.

WOMEN OF THE DC UNIVERSE 3: RAVEN BUST

DC made the right decision in tabbing Amanda Conner to design some busts for their Women of the DCU line as she has the uncanny ability to balance cheekiness with cheesecake-ness. This time, the POWER GIRL artist takes on Raven
