A must have for Star Wars fans. This hardcover is the graphic adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s masterful original Thrawn trilogy of novels, the books that resurrected the Star Wars franchise in the 90’s. Without these stories, I shudder to think about where the franchise would be.

 

STAR WARS ADVENTURES: LUKE SKYWALKER AND THE TREASURE OF THE DRAGON SNAKES

It’s Batgirl’s first night and she’d in for a steep learning curve.

R.E.B.E.L.S. #10

The worst place to be is smack dab between the raging hordes of the Sinestro Corps and the Black Lanterns, who in this case are the resurrected arch enemies of Vril Dox. Throw in Starro the Conqueror and you’re having one BAD day.

Unfortunately, like any family reunion, old tensions flare up and lead to confrontations. Old tensions like being long dead and resurrected by the ultimate evil Nekron. That ever happen at any one else’s Thanksgiving, or is it just me?

 

BATMAN: THE CAT AND THE BAT TP

Written by Fabian Nicieza. Illustrated by Kevin Maguire.

This fantastic arc from BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL is collected, and presents an over the top fun tale featuring the Catwoman and the original Batgirl, Barbara Gordon. The two face off and engage in a back and forth game of cat and mouse across Gotham City, with a stop at an exclusive nudist club along the way. Strong characterization from Nicieza and beautiful art from Maguire make this well worth reading.

 

JLA YEAR ONE TP NEW PRINTING

Written by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn. Illustrated by Barry Kitson and Michael Bair.

The new definitive origin of the Justice League of America is back in a new printing! Witness the growth of DC’s greatest team as Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and the Black Canary learn the true meaning of teamwork in the face of an alien invasion.

 

SIMON DARK: THE GAME OF LIFE TP

Written by Steve Niles. Illustrated by Scott Hampton.

The story of Gotham’s other dark hero comes to an end. Criminally underrated when first released in single issues, this is a great series that deserves to be read over and over again. This third and final volume collects issues #13 - #18.

 

TERRA TP

Written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. Illustrated by Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti.

Collected along with her first appearance in SUPERGIRL #12, this great limited series from early this year is the perfect introduction to the newest heroine to be called Terra. The writing pair of Palmiotti & Gray delivers their usual strong form, and the artwork of Amanda Conner is absolutely perfect.

 

DC - VERTIGO

CINDERELLA: FROM FABLETOWN WITH LOVE #1 (of 6)

Written by Chris Roberson. Illustrated by Shawn McManus. Cover by Chrissie Zullo.

Of FABLES’ many superb ideas, Cinderella’s reimagining as a secret agent super-spy is surely one of the best. And there aren’t enough FABLES spin-offs, so this new limited series is the perfect mix. In this new series, Cindy attempts to track down supernatural artifacts from the Homelands that keep popping up in the modern world.

 

THE CHILL HC

After the success and quality of Vertigo Crime’s two launch novels (DARK ENTRIES and FILTHY RICH), it’s a safe bet that the rest of the books will be rocking reads. The newest entry in the Vertigo Crime series comes from best selling crime novelist Jason Starr, and features a beat down Irish cop on the trail of a savage ritualistic serial killer.

Okay, remember waaaaay back in 2006, Grant Morrison was supposed to write the Authority, and everyone was like “awesome”, but then the first issue was so boring because it was like about some dude’s failing marriage and the Authority wasn’t even in it until the 2nd issue and then Grant quit the book in a huff because it was reviewed so poorly and apparently Grant’s a teenage girl when it comes to shit like that? Remember??? Well, it looks like WildStorm finally got around to cleaning up Grant’s giant mess, because we’re finishing off that lost Authority story, but you can get the first two issues right here before picking up ...

Written by Robert Kirkman. Illustrated by Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino. Covers by those same guys.

The original Image characters (sadly minus anything Jim Lee did because he totally sold out to DC), plus some new random guy designed by Whilce, unite to face some kind of evil so powerful that only heroic juggernauts like Shadowhawk and Witchblade could ever hope to defeat it. Each artist will be drawing their character throughout the story, making every page like one giant jam piece of artwork. No word yet if someone is contractually obligated to draw their characters in front of Youngblood so that Rob doesn’t have to draw any feet. Plus, this series will feature something the original Image never had, in the writing talent of Robert Kirkman.

After the recently concluded year long epic “World’s Most Wanted”, what’s next for Tony Stark? Matt Fraction certainly seems to be delivering the goods on Shell-head since he began writing this book, and this next arc looks to continue the trend of excellence. This is a great place to start reading Iron Man.

But no, the hip, smart, and oh-so-cool superhero police procedural is finally back for a new monthly (they promise) ongoing series. Perfect for new readers and old fans alike!

Spinning off from ASTONISHING X-MEN, the agency tasked with Earth’s interactions with aliens gets the spotlight in this new series. Featuring Agent Brand, Henry McCoy (a.k.a. Beast), and the dragon Lockheed teaming up to stop the all too easy to hate Henry Gyrich from ridding the Earth of all aliens. This new ongoing will likely also have numerous cosmic guest appearances.
